Bethesda bringing mods to consoles?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 7:30 am

Especially since PSN is a more open network and Sony allowed Unreal 3 mods on PS3. What's the status of this? I hope we can get some kind of texture mods as well, that would be awesome. I can see this happening on PS3 because Sony allowed Steamworks from Valve for Portal 2.

They wanted to try to bring some of the bigger user made mods to consoles...would be nice....it's really the only downside to playing on a console.

I don't own any consoles, but I do hope Sony/Microsoft would allow mods. Can't think how anyone would dislike it. ;)

Sadly it is not up to Bethesda to decide though, if it was, you'd have mods already.

Valve wanted Steamworks on PS3 for Portal 2, Sony allowed it. If Bethesda approaches Sony about this surely they would allow it.

Sure, why not? I just doubt that Sony and Microsoft would agree to this and wonder how exactly you'd be able to install them. They have varied installation methods depending on what they do, and can be fairly complicated and sometimes require some background knowledge so you don't screw things up.

I got it for PC because I doubt there will be console mods, but it'd be cool if there were some.

No. Mods should be for PC only. Mods are a great reason people still PC game.

LOL at pc elitism. "no this is the only thing that makes my computer better than your consoles! must...not...let console users enjoy them!"

personally - I started playing elder scrolls with morrowin on the original xbox, played oblivion on 360, and now skyrim. I won't be broken hearted if mods don't make it to the console because I don't expect them to, but i would be beyond excited if they did. I already play the games for hundreds of hours and that's just vanilla and DLC versions. I shudder to think how much more i would play if i was able to mod.

I honestly still play vanilla morrowind and oblivion to this day. I'm a console gamer and every second of them is still original versions, although does include all expansions. somehow i've never gotten tired of an elder scrolls game even without mdos, but yes, i would like them.

It's not gonna happen. Getting mods to work properly in Morrowind & Oblivion required user made programs to sort and merge mods, and even then some manual tinkering had to be done to assure that no bugs or conflicts occurred. It's not going to happen in this generation of consoles, and I doubt it will happen any time soon.

While I understand your desire, sorry, keep dreaming, PS3 players, you're not getting any love from Bethesda at all.

PC players don't get love either, but we have to content ourselves with each other and the modding community. Putting mods on PS3 would require the sort of support and care about the userbase Bethesda doesn't have.

doubt MS would go for this, would be awesome though
they have ridiculous rules about official updates
don't see them allowing user made content like this on their network

do remember you could mod morrowind on xbox, though I never did it myself (played MW on PC)

TOdd has said two things

"they want to mods on consoles"

"with dev tools, mods WORK" on console.

They have been talking to micro and Sony about it. The issue is how to creat security for them as well as testing. They don't want to break your saves. It would be nice to see famous mods like nehrim for oblivion on console. But untill that happens, pc has the mod advantage

I play vanilla on Xbox. In about a year after creation kit comes out, I'll buy pc

Skyrim mods on the Xbox... Seems like something Microsoft would exploit. If you hope to see Skyrim mods on the 360, you had better load up on Microsoft Points.
Microsoft would have to host the mods, as they would NEVER allow users to download content from their PC.

Doubt if texture mods would be possible due to hardware constraints.

Microsoft would probably disagree/agree but asks Bethesda to charge it dearly, and since Bethesda has some sort of exclusive deals with Microsoft I doubt if it's possible even if Sony agrees to it.

Edit: just read the article and saw Todd saying 90% of the players are on the consoles. No wonder they made the PC version so [censored].
But then, on the first day of release there are more than 280k concurrent players on steam, I sincerely doubt the correctness of Todd's estimation.

Nothing against it but it will never work. Microfoft/Sony wont allow it, theyd need to be supervised and hosted somehow, console hardware couldnt handle it, it would cause a load of bugs and other problems that cant be fixed on console etcetc

Bethesda said that they might port some of the most popular mods on the PC over to the console versions. Obviously those mods would not be something as complicated and easy to mess up as FCOM. I can definitely see Beth porting mods over, making them easier to install on a console. They would essentially be turning mods into DLC.

Would I like to? Yes. Will it happen? No.

And I'm not sure if this would fly with Microsoft and Sony; if Bethesda did a few compilation DLC of their favorite mods, perhaps.

I personally prefer to work on PC but it wouldn't bother me if mods got on consoles, however it would be a cold day in hell if I ever saw Microsoft and Sony hosting them for free, they would take advantage of it and charge for every one of them.

Free money with no development and only minimal bandwidth costs :celebration:
