Bethesda didn't learn from Fallout 3

Post » Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:12 pm

youl have to excuse me for being "ignorant" but how the flying [censored]could you (bethesda) make the same game with the same problems?...... again? im not talking about bugs, freezing or glitching that the producers never bother to beta test before releasing a game, im used to that,

im talking about when you finish the storyline after HOURS of building rep, finding unique items, leveling up and exploring the vast wastelands only to find out when you finish the main story at the battle of hoover dam, you get ANOTHER giant middle finger saying "haha, thats it, game over dude."

a lesson obviously was not learned after the Broken steel DLC for fallout 3.

so, when are they going to make a DLC to continue playing after hoover dam?

Bethesda didn't work on New Vegas genius. It was Obsidian and Fallout 3 was amazing and so is New Vegas.

Obsidian developped New Vegas, not Bethesda.

This said, here is Project Director Josh Sawyer saying why there's a definitive ending: http://www.1up.com/news/fallout-new-vegas-definitive-ending
The definitive ending was much more satisfying for me than Fallout 3's Broken Steel.

And no, there won't ever be a DLC that allows you to continue after the end.

You have 5 different endings. Pretty hard to make 1 DLC that gives post-endgame play.

Plus the consequences for each settlement and companions.
Asking to play after the main quest is asking for a whole new game.

Games that don't have an ending, like Oblivion and post-DLC FO3, etc., are more the exception than the norm. Most games tell a story - you do things for the main story, for side-storys and then,. you finish the game. Obsidian, the developer of FONV never said they were making an open-ended game.

I never cared that FO3 ended and it wouldn't have mattered to me if Bethesda never decided to add the DLC that opened it back up. But hey, that's me.

Not them, and not a flaw, its expected from the series.

Exactly. You have consequences to almost everything you do in the Mojave Wasteland. It's impossible to make them all converge into one point.

.. ok.. im not gonna argue about who made it. and i loved fallout 3, i got every trophie including all the DLCs. i just want to continue playing new vegas so i can get all my trophies without having to do multiple playthroughs. it completely boggles my mind that they didn't do that in new vegas. they didn't even need an alternate storyline or continued plot to something else, it could have just simply ended at hoover dam, you go back to the lucky eight, get your reward, and then [censored] off and do what ever you want. how could that be so avoideable?

I don't like the fact that the Legion got the shaft when it came to quests. They only have like four or five quests. It's somewhat buggy ((it seems to be fixed now)) and you can't pick up Throwing Spears.

If you're on PC, there is a popular mod that allows you to play after the main quest.

Short answer -- because of some last minute design decisions (chiefly the addition of companions), the ending to Fallout 3 was unsatisfactory to Bethesda and the fanbase. To be blunt, it was dumb.
Because the ending of the main quest of Fallout 3 was uncomplicated, it was technically feasible to add a DLC that fixed the ending and allowed free roaming afterward. (My opinion is that the game should still have ended after the destruction of the Enclave's base at Edwards AFB.)
However, the ending of New Vegas is vastly more complicated than that of Fallout 3. Also, despite perhaps being slightly underwhelming, the ending is satisfactory and a logical place to conclude the story. It's all over, nothing else to see.

If Bethesda felt so strongly about free play, they would have put it in the contract. This was not a mistake, it was a design choice. I understand that someone coming into Fallout from the Elder Scrolls (as I did) would expect no ending to the game; endings in Fallout are the norm (F2 had an Easter Egg continuation that by most accounts was pretty pointless). New Vegas is true to Fallout.

You can free roam and mess around all you want. Before Hoover Dam.

Long Answer -- Read the 5,000 other threads about this.

I don't understand what's so hard about getting all your trophies before finishing the game? (edit - is there something that actually prevents this trophy wise?) Or making a save game a little before Hoover Dam in case you want to do stuff you missed w/out playing all of it again? There was a warning before you do Hoover Dam. It's a little vague for some people, perhaps, but it was a warning.

Without some heavy-duty save-game micromanagement, you can't get all the trophies on one playthrough, as some are for mutually exclusive quests.

Anyway, there's loads of stuff you'll never see if you only do one playthrough. Multiple playthroughs are the way to go.

It shouldn't anymore, it was explained why they didn't. It made the game better. Yes, I'd like to keep playing but since I have a save right before Hoover Dam, I guess, I can keep playing? IJS

It is possible.
But it's such a huge undertaking that few modders will try. Even fewer will see the end of it.

We ll its pretty clear that you don t know that Obsidian made this game.......... Not Bethesda. Fo3 s lead dev said they won t make that mistake again. We ll see in fo4, because I m pretty sure Bethesda will be back in the saddle for that.

Another player to lazy to delay finishing the game until he's finished.
Really what is so complicated about waiting to beat the game until your ready to be done playing. Your never forced to play the final quest and your even warned.

Their are like 4 endings with 75 ending scenarios. You have to make more than 1 character if you want all the trophies/gamer points.

Or you need save points before you go make certain groups or people win, if you want everything on one playthrough.
