Bethesda disappoints

Post » Wed Mar 05, 2014 8:20 am

I recently thought of purchasing a PS4, with the upcoming release of Elder Scrolls Online as my main reason to buy the system. I have been a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series for such a long time, and was really excited by the news of this upcoming title. So, just the other day I went to GameStop to see about pre-ordering ESO, and while I was at it, see if I could find out the scoop on the game. Well needless to say, it didn't take long to find on a few sites some negative reviews about ESO. I don't take anyone's opinion to heart, but the one thing that totally took me buy surprise, was the mention of a fee. So here's what I think about the fee and why it prevented me from ever purchasing ESO. The first reason is, as PS customers know, Sony has joined the dark side and has put a price tag on online gaming. At first I was not too happy about that, but PS plus being the key to playing online is really not that bad, I don't think people should've been forced into it, but at least there are benefits to it. At first I thought Bethesda was being mindful of their fans by stating that, they would override the need for PS plus to play ESO online, but was utterly disappointed to find out they were adding a $15 monthly fee. The opening game price isn't enough? Before people start with reasons or excuses why a fee is OK, just think about GTA5 for PS. Finally, there is no need to charge people $180 a year to play a video game, that will take longer than a year, for the developers to make certain that it will run at 100%. Do as you please, those who think the fee is no big deal, but when your complaining about how a server is always freezing, or glitches are messing up your gaming. Remember, it was you that thought a monthly fee was reasonable. Sorry Bethesda, I believe your just trying to fatten your pockets.

Guess it's good this isn't a bethesda game then.

P.S. Sony waived the $15/m fee for PSN. Still have to pay $15/m for the game.

P.P.S. Microsoft didn't. They're greedy. Have to pay $15/m + whatever XBL cost is.

I suggest you wait for TES VI, I think it will release in 2017.

Bethesda just takes same from all players - a monthly fee for MMO games. I'm not sure what are you talking about becuase I got PC.

hahah funny post.

i dont think this threads intended to be taken seriously. its a joke like the others isn't it?

the games really great so far and stacks of people have preordered or are buying at launch

its just another moan about subscriptions even though there are millions of people who pay mmo subscriptions and are happy with the idea

Servers take money to run, sorry but that's just how it works. There is no reasonable expectation for it to be any different on a Playstation then on any other platform. That you compare a MMO to GTA shows that you don't understand this, but your lack of understanding does not effect reality. One can argue that the price being asked is too high, but again it costs money to run servers and an MMO needs servers.

The main question is why do people think Bethesda is working on ESO?

Its the other way around actually. Well, Zenimax Media owns Bethesda, Zenimax Online id Software and a few others.

Anyway, the fee is not there to pay the devs to make the game running fine and then go partying. Its here to keep the game in development, bringing new stuff and improving it.
Additionally, keeping the serve running.

For Xbox players, i am really sorry.

At a guess, its all the bethesda logos and names pasted all over the place. Seems an easy enough assumption to make.

It's not a fee, it's a monthly subscription. A fee is a one-off payment.

And why on earth were you surprised by this? It's the payment model used by many of the most successful MMOs.

No, Zenimax Media owns Bethesda, and Zenimax Online Studios is a separate entity from Bethesda

I know that, but Zenimax Media was founded to "house" Bethesda and the others. Its a publisher/investor and i suppose it handles accounting, taxes and stuff better than a game dev alone.

For the same reason people think publishers are the developers, as well as "Bethesda" being the name tied to all the other TES games.

In fact, I think Zenimax knows this as well and is taking advantage of it. When BGS makes a game, Zenimax Media is publishing it. When any other Zenimax subsidiary is developing a game, it's published under Bethesda Softworks.

GTA5 isn't an MMO so it's not anologous to MMO's. I take it you're new to MMO's so I suggest you read up on the genre to learn why a sub fee is preferable to the free-to-play alternatives.

Those damn businesses! Always trying to make a buck!

Seriously. You obviously have no idea how MMO's run. Please educate yourself before talking. You sound like a Creationist extolling all the reasons why Evolution is wrong.
