Bethesda, FIX THE LOW SOUND

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:05 pm

It was pretty low for me on default standards but then I just edit the main speaker lvl in windows to max and all the programs except skyrim on half or lower. Never had to do this for any other game though.

I noticed, but i thought it was just me... not one of my priorities but definetly needs to be fixed eventually.

I'm running a M-audio Profire 610 audio interface and I have to crank the sound al lthe way up on it to get it anywhere near audible...everything else on my comp is nicely audible at the halfway mark.

It seems to be a realtek issue usually.
Anyway, here is a simple fix that worked for me. Hope it does for you as well. Also it seems editing the .ini for volume doesn't actually do anything but either way I set mine to 2.0

open up your Realtek HD audio manager
(if you can't find it, it SHOULD be in C:\Program Files\Realtek\Audio\HDA) it's RAVCpl64.exe
->speaker configuration
->change to 5.1 configuration
->uncheck center, subwoofer, rear pair, leave both "full range speakers" options on

I have an Xfi Fatality Pro card, and I have no extra fancy settings/eq enhancements/eax off/3d off/ 2.1 setting stereo speakers, I also use it for music making (ASIO driver) and I have 5 other games, this is the most quite.

Best described is compared to playing an mp3, listing to web radio/tv, youtube, all other games, this game plays at max level at about 50 percent of everything else. I have to amp it though extra box to up the volume to "normal level like everything else I play" and then deafen myself when i forget and go play some music.

There is an issue for sure, never had a game so far that's been this overall quite.

This is on everything, IE 100 percent volume in game settings = 50 volume output on system.

X-fi, headphones, everything is set perfectly and sounds great with this game BUT I've had to turn the volume up a couple of clicks higher vs any other game I play. A little odd but not earth shattering.

Skyrim's volume is low in general, even with in-game volume options maxed. I've had this issue since launch. I'm on Windows XP SP3. I have a Realtek sound card, and I normally have my speaker configuration set to headphones, with my headphones plugged in on the front. My Master volume and Wave volume are both set to about 50%. This setup works perfectly for most other things.

But Skyrim is too quiet, even with Master and Wave maxed. I can "fix" it by setting my speaker configuration to 5.1 surround sound. Without changing any other settings, this makes it sound louder. But it still sounds a bit off.

Here's my DxDiag if it helps.

If you are experiencing low volume and you're listening to stereo speaker setup or headphones use the following settings as it seems Bethesda is not supporting stereo channel mixing correctly and it's NOT a specific hardware related issue:

---------------------------------------------

Realtek HD onboard interface:

You plug the speakers or headphones to the "black" (if using speakers) or "green" headphone jack as usual and choose the appropriate speaker config you have in the plugged in device config list. Then set the speaker config in the Realtek HD audio manager to 5.1 speakers and enable both the "Full-range Speakers" settings; "Front left and right" and "Surround speakers". Now verify that you get sound out of all channels played in the "auto-test". You should be able to get a sound from all channels except the subwoofer with that config.

Other soundcards:

If you're not using Realtek HD onboard sound you can probably still find the same configuration in the soundcard drivers somewhere (NOTE: X-Fi users NEED to go via windows control panel as the driver interface speaker config and windows speaker config AREN'T the same and not linked to each other) but you can of course also just adjust it through windows control panel like this too:

Step1: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5456/speakerconfig1.png
Step2: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3153/speakerconfig2.png
Step3: http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/792/speakerconfig3.png
Step4: http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/228/speakerconfig4.png

--------------------------------------------

Also using 24 bit / 44100 Hz bit depth / sample rate playback results in slightly higher output volume and best possible quality for this game. On Windows Vista/7 you can choose this in the speaker properties and "Advanced" tab.

Seems like Bethesda needs to address stereo channel mixing of this game, above config works wonderfully for me though both delivering normal volume levels as well as very nice sound quality and positioning even as a headphone user.

*raises hand*

Constant low volume here. It's like Skyrim is sitting with its bum on the mute button--the Bethesda logo sound is at what should be a normal audio level for my system, and then the overall volume drops by 50%. At least. Volume sliders are all cranked up to max in game, and the first time I played I could literally only hear every third word of the dialogue, and nothing else. And that's only if I strained my ears.

What's fixed it for me, in bandaid fashion, is toggling Loudness Equalization on every time I want to play the game.

I'm 100% convinced this an issue with Skyrim, not my sound set-up. I currently do a lot of transcription for a living. That means I need to have good quality, high volume sound on both my headphones and my speakers--so I can hear the audio I'm transcribing and not make errors. So...please trust me when I say that I know my sound settings. They're meant to be audible no matter what.

Everything else on my system: system sounds, IM programs, iTunes, other games are all fine without needing to make adjustments. Heck, with most games I usually have to turn the volume down to keep them from hurting my ears. Skyrim is the polar opposite, even when running concurrently with, say, iTunes--iTunes will absolutely drown Skyrim out if I don't have Loudness Equalization on.

I have Realtek HD onboard sound through my motherboard (Asus P5Q Pro). Headphones are a Sony dynamic stereo set, model number MDR-V150. Speaker config is set to stereo, 2 channel, 24 bit, 96000 Hz. Windows 7 x64 Professional, if OS should matter at all.

^ Can you try using 5.1 speaker config as I described above and see if it fixes it for you? Try 5.1 speaker config as well as 24 bit / 44100 Hz.

I actually bumped my headphones down to 24 bit / 44100 Hz the first time I ran Skyrim. Same problem.

Can't change speaker config with the headphones to 5.1. It's locked at stereo. (The "speaker configuration" drop-down menu is greyed out.) I don't think those headphones are capable of 5.1 sound; they only do stereo.

@RPGWiZaRD

What can i say.. you, my friend are a gentleman and a scholar...

I tried out your settings (5.1 speaker config as well as 24 bit / 44100 Hz) with some trepidation and they totally worked for me..

I can now turn down my master volume settings inline with what i had set for my other functional applications.... Winamp and others remained tight with 5.1 sound... even on headphones...

So folks if you have similar issues, please try out RPGWiZaRD's solution... heck it should be stickied...

Thanks mate!

Did you try going by control panel as well as Realtek Interface? Do you have the latest Realtek drivers installed? I'm just using normal stereo headphones, the config I provided processes the signal as 5.1 and turns it into stereo (as long as the plugged in device is set properly).

I just tried the 5.1 setting for 2.1 speakers setup and it works :)

I failed to read this whole thread or previous page and now I have sound volume normal again setting windows sound/speakers to 5.1 instead of 2.1 (XP 32).

Thanks for your post mate, even though I missed that page the fist time around.

BTW: I have an XFI fatality platinum card, and I kept the surround settings in the xfi control panel to 2.1 and JUST changed windows control panel/sounds/speakers to 5.1 in that drop down to sort it.

For me the npc voices are like a whisper when you face an npc, but if you turn to the side you can hear them fine.

Well, I thought I'd had the latest drivers--turns out it was just the latest Realtek drivers provided by my motherboard manufacturer. Oops. I'm now on the real latest Realtek drivers (2.66) and I can finally configure my headphones to 5.1.

I've set them up as shown in the screenshot...we'll see if it makes any difference to Skyrim or not later. :)

Got everything except footsteps at 100% volume. My speaker sound is also at 100% and only now the volume is good.
Of course everything else on my machine is extremely loud now.

I have my computer's volume set to maximum. I have Master, Footsteps and Voice set to maximum. Effects, slightly below half. Music, about 1/4.

I cannot hear footsteps, at all, unless I jump. Only when I jump do I hear anything. Horse's hooves are slightly louder, but not nearly as loud as they were in Oblivion, or other games that have horses. But the most annoying thing is voices. I sometimes have to strain to hear voices. I have gone back to earlier saves and completely turned off Effects and Music in a desperate attempt to hear quest dialog. Then, after I've heard the quest dialog, I go back into audio and Effects and Music back to where I want them.

The game has some loud sounds. They aren't all soft on my machine. When those two drum beats sounds while the Bethesda logo is on the screen it almost destroys my headphones, it's so loud. Something is definitely wrong with sound in this game.

I recevied this mail from Gstaff concerning this sound issue:
Sorry you're having issues with the audio settings on Skyrim. Could you send me your audio hardware & settings, details on speakers and/or headphones, as well as DxDiag info

Thanks

I think we should all list (in spoilers) what he said... here in this thread.

Music volume on the main menu and footsteps ingame are very faint, almost inaudible unless i crank my speakers volume up sky high. Using a Creative X-fi Xtreme gamer and Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II Speakers. Windows is up-to-date along with DX and Drivers. Only game i have this problem with.

Wow so almost 70% of the people have a low volume issue here? That's a lot. I hope Bethesda can fix this. It would be bad to have to do a volume changing routine for the next... year or so... we'll play Skyrim.

Just tried that... didn't work. Darn :(

Maybe your poll isn't accurate - try posting it in the General forum, with a subject like "Need your vote to figure this out" and don't mention LOW SOUND in your title. I reckon a lot of threads get ignored if they aren't relevant to people, hence they wont vote and you wont get a true representation.

Got a heads up from a friend that was having this issue, setting the speakers to 5.1 even though he's on a single pair of speakers actually fixed the problem for him. Might be worth a try for you guys.
