Bethesda Game Compatiblity

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:28 am

I bought a new PC and I don't have any Beth games installed on it yet or I'd try this out myself, but how compatible are Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Morrowind as far as using resources from either game in mods for either game? For instance, could I use a Clanfear nif and its animations from Morrowind to make a new enemy to import into a Fallout 3 mod? Or could I use a Radscorpion in an Oblivion mod? I would assume using resources from an earlier game in a newer, more powerful engine would fare better than using newer ones in an older engine.

Also, how do the 3 different Construction Sets differ between the 3 games as far as using either to mod for either game? I'm sure there's more to it "under the crust" than what I anticipate, but since all 3 games use the same file format (esm/esp), is it at all possible to open Oblivion mods in the GECK as long as you load the Oblivion.esm first? I'm guessing maybe not with a lot of success if such game settings and global variable parameters are kept in the Contruction Set itself and not the esm.

I imagine the answers are pretty simple, but I don't have much programming experience and was just curious.

Thanks.

We are not allowed to use assets from any other game in any of those games even Beth game to Beth game.

and

Even if it was allowed its not just a plug and play situation -> the file formats are slightly different going from game to game.

The resources are not compatible between the three games without modifying them first using a 3D program. You 'could' use these for yourself in your own game, but its totally illegal to share them with anybody else. period.

The constructions sets ONLY works for the game they were made for. You cannot use the GECK to load Oblivion content, you would need to use the CS that was made for Oblivion.

The construction sets work mostly the same between the three games. The construction sets do improve so that the GECK is the most advanced and has the most functions.

The only 'exception' is we're somewhat forced to use the TESC for Oblivion on Fallout 3 when we want to make proper LIP files, as it's still broken in the GECK.

Thanks. I didn't really need the legal lecture on what I can and can't use in my mods. I already understand that and made no intentions of it either. But I guess it's beneficial to mention in case someone "less informed" comes across this topic. Either way, I was just curious after noticing that once Iinstalled the GECK, all of my esm/esp files (even the TES ones) changed to the GECK icon. Thanks for the info and responses thoug.

I don't see how 10 words is a 'lecture'.

That is because the esm/esp extension can only be assigned to one program. The last CS program you installed was the GECK, so they all get reassigned to the GECK.

Closed before the mods have to hand out lectures about roleplaying English teachers.

Willie Sea gave the correct answer. Nobody is going to hassle you if you commingle assets from the different games on your own computer, for your own enjoyment. But on the other hand, it's technically very challenging, you won't get any help with it here, and you can't distribute anything you made that way to anybody else.
