I say make hint areas and let us search. In Oblivion it was kind of annoying to know EXACTLY where an item was and stuff like that and you didnt have to search for it but on the other hand in Morrowind it was sometimes annoyying to get told oh its west of tel branora near a rock and it took like 30 minutes to find it. (Go for 3-10 minutes of area searching and most people wil be happy)

Yes PLEASE. The compass/waypoint system in Oblivion destroyed all exploration and discovery. Every dungeon was pointed out to you (well there were so many it didn't matter much anyway) and every quest was "follow this arrow to the cave". If you disabled it with a mod, the game would break, because there were no NPC directions like in Morrowind. It was either "Go to this place I marked on your map" or... nothing. Dungeon could be anywhere. It was a horribly half baked feature.

Map markers/compass are already being discussed in another topic.

I personally suggest a compromise between the two. Don't give players exact locations of where to go. But instead, give them the general area of what they are looking for.

I play with a mod that removes the markers and my game is just fine.

OT: I think they should make it toggleable. If there were two things in vanilla OB that really irked me, it was levelled enemies and the dang blasted quest marker.

sorry man but i play on console and you have to think about people who play on console too youre not alone in your PC world and unfortunately we cant mod. so we have to suggest things out and not rely on the fact that it will be modded.

anyway i personally prefer vanilla games except for minor addons like new textures for books and [censored] like that

It ruins the whole point of exploration. Get rid of showing us the exact place at least, i dont wanna just go from waypoint to waypoint the entire game...its not fun.

I'd rather they didn't bother, but instead implemented the following featuers
- Allow user to add their own journal entries
- Allow user to add their own map notes

These things, along with forcing the writers to pay very close attention to quest related details (and what ends up in the log) should completely eliminate the need for the MYSTERIOUS PERPETUAL DIVINE GUIDANCE

If they were toggle-able that would turn my immersion way off, I would feel like if I was about to give up I could just cheat.
Hint areas would be better, a general idea of where it would be.

Make it an option in startup. Like many things, those who want it can have it. Those who don't want it, won't have it. And everybody is happy. See how that works? :icecream:

Oh yeah let us put our own map markers on the other hand.

For that person just above me. were asking for them to remove it so that they make the quest log better and more meaning ful than oblivion not because we dont want people to use it.

in fact if they go with quest logs as good as morrowind and give us the option for quest markers NOW! it will make everyone happy. people wont be happy if they have the option and they have [censored] quest logs like oblivion

My comment wasn't directed at console gamers. I was responding to the guy that said quest marker removal mods break the game. Believe me, you have my sympathy. I played Oblivion on the 360 for 4 years before I finally built a PC that could run it. Sorry for the confusion :)

Methinks this would have been a good thread topic worthy of a poll for yes or no.

I personally enjoyed not knowing where anything was in Morrowind, and using the guidance of NPCs, and sort of my own knowledge of the area to help me find it. Some of my most rewarding moments came from finding a hard to find area, based soley on some vague description.

So, in short, I think it should be maybe an option that the user can disable.

Yes.

Give us a game that makes us think. Not a game made flying through it. This isn't an MMO

you don't have to use them in Oblivion just set up an active quest that has no arrow and work on another quest and this topic is probably closed

Bull. I tried, the mods don't work. If you remove the compass/arrow system entirely, you cannot complete quests. NPCs will say "Go to x dungeon". And that's it. Normally they mark it on your map and you follow your magical all seeing compass. But with it modded off... well now you can't do the quest. It's somewhere north of the city. Great. I have no idea where, because the game doesn't give you any directions outside of marking your map, and with the mod turning that off... out of luck. There needs to be an in between. Sadly, because now we're stuck with voice acting, we can't just add in text directions from various NPCs.

Or make it toggleable, so everyone wins. Like I said, I strongly dislike the magic quest markers, but I know there are some people that like it. I say make it toggleable and give the player the choice. I'm pretty certain the code to make it toggleable wouldn't be difficult at all to implement either.

Right, then how do you propose someone finishes a quest that only marks the place on your map and gives no further instructions? People really don't think anymore do they?
