Bethesda, Give us REAL companions: smarts & useful comma

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:07 am

Hi everyone,

As you all might tell, I do not agree with the way companions "auto attack" everyone they see, spoiling you sneak or magic/sword, etc. attacks and maneuvers.

Please petition Bethesda to add useful companion AI as well as useful commands.
Ex. "What is a thane?" is NOT a useful command!

Comments?
Thanks

Yes please!

My single complaint about companions - lack of squad commands, especially "rally"/"flee".

I heard they wanted to ship real companions but they kept showing up dead. You can get an inflatable companion if you go to a special site. I prefer the in game companions myself.

No, you missed one IMPORTANT companion dialog option: "The Thane question"

Killing dreaded enemies with questions about my "Thanehood"......Where my Thane at?..Thug Thane.......stupid

..It's a dialogue option for Lydia. It has nothing to do with her as a companion.

Do you know how awfully stupid you sound right now?

Would forgive their stupidity in a heart beat if they acually had a personality and story even half as good as something Bioware would cook up.

Look, my point still stands: Companion commands are HORRIBLE in Skryim. Companions are only human shield to hide behind. That's it.

BTW, you might want to calm down on knocking me or a moderator friend will visit you VERY soon :)

Post about the companions (stick to the topic at hand) and stop attacking people.

I agree, I'd like to be able to tell them to be more passive/aggressive depending on what I'm up to - Lydia has murdered NPCs for no good reason while I am trying to trade with them, and taken actions that have started fights with the guards in a number of settlements.

Yeah..this would have been a really, really good time to borrow the Fallout New Vegas tactics wheel.

See folks,

Everyone here knows that the companions are a botched job.

Bethesda, please redeem yourself.

I don't mind even if there's one button that is context sensitive.

So basically what I'd like to see is:

Button 1 - need to target something and the following will occur - attack/ use/ go to location/ perform action.
Button 2 - rally. Two possibilities - if you sheath weapons they will do the same; cease engaging in combat and follow you.
..................................................... - with weapons drawn they will come to your side but continue to engage in combat.

Anything else is a bonus, but that is the bare minimum needed.

I'd really like the ability to tell companions to MOVE when they're blocking my path.

And it is really great that skyrim has companions, but why do they not have the abilities of New Vegas' companions? It's like bethesda doesn't even look at its other games before making a new one. Same with horse combat. That should have been implemented in oblivion, instead skyrim lacks it too.

Bioware games have amazing companions, bethesda could learn from them. Alistair, Morrigan, Liliana from Dragon Age Origins were both extremely memorable and useful.

All it really needs I think are two things, a toggle hold position button (press the button and the companions stops where they are, not attacking anything, until you press the button again to release them), and the ability to specify ranged, melee or automatic combat. Pretty sure Fallout let you specify ranged or melee, so that should be easy to mod in, as would the toggle hold button.

*edit - Dragon Age let you program your own companion AI. This game doesn't have as many spells or abilities for followers, so it would be sort of pointless.

The first time we've even had companions in TES and they're already not good enough?

It's not a squad based action RPG, thats Biowares job.

Its just a dude to keep you company and hold your sword while you take a leak.

Yeah, but I want that dude to stay put for a second while I go cut some throats, then catch up again when I call him. And I want him to stay put for a bit while I'm launching my fireballs, not rush right into the line of fire. And I don't want to have to deal with a whole dialog menu in the middle of combat to make that happen. Just give me a hotkey (or the CK and I'll do it myself.)

Haha maybe so. And first in TES but not first since Oblivion came out- both fallout 3 and new vegas had companions and I'm sure the idea's been floating around for a long time. Surely they could've given skyrim's companions more abilities, at least as many as their other games.

I really was expecting carry over from Fallout NV, the better way to command companions, also side story/quests for each companion would of been a great addition as well.

On a side note, seeing your companions weight carrying ability would be nice :whistling:

True, but the fact that they will just attack any enemy on sight untill they're almost dead is a bit silly. The player should be able to tell them to run from something that is too powerful, otherwise they're unmemorable meat shields which you have to keep going through.

I would like to see:

Wait here
Hold your fire
Attack on sight
Use ranged/melee
Buzz off
Carry my stuff
Attack THAT guy, and I'll attack THIS guy
Sneak up and kill him (for stealth followers)

Another benefit of the PC platform: "tai" as "don't do anything" and "moveto player" as "get over here" gives me all the remote control over them i need :hehe:

The companion wheel of New Vegas was one of the thing Bethesda should have brought in from NV.
