Bethesda, I have the solution to your ugly woman problem

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2016 11:42 am

I mean in game lol, just copy Desmedona and paste her with different hair styles around the wasteland, every other woman looks like I'd catch something if I touched them, with the exception of Piper

If you think this game is bad, you must not have played the last two Fallout or Elder Scrolls games. :P the facegen in this game might be the best I've seen in a game yet.

The faces tend to look atrocious in this game...

I looked at both the mod authors screenshots and the user submitted screenshots, and every character looked the same!

For me, the faces in this game are very hit and miss..especially when it comes to female faces. You get great looking faces like http://nerdreactor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Fallout-4-Preston-Garvey.jpg?394dcb, https://i.ytimg.com/vi/aZyxAy3B9z8/maxresdefault.jpg and http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/d/d6/Danse.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151107134727. And then you get shoddy looking female faces like http://cdn0.dailydot.com/uploaded/images/original/2015/11/8/Fallout_4_PS4_Piper.jpg, http://assets.vg247.com/current//2015/11/fallout4_guide_mama_murphy.jpg and http://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/1151/images/3238-0-1448669610.jpg.

When I say shoddy, I don't mean how attractive they are. I mean how much character they have.http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/6/64/Mama_Murphy.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151104063059 looks like a melting wax figurine. Compare her face to some of the http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/9/99/Manya.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20101229221405

it's a wasteland. People are sleeping on fllthy matresses covered in grime. Are you expecting some sparkly clean anime characters?

I think they did a great job with the characters. A huge improvement from Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

 That's not a fair comparison!

Bethesda would have to cast at least 100 different models and capture their faces in order to achieve the same realism and character that you find in Ciri and Yennerfer's faces. They tried a very basic approach to this in Oblivion using some sort of middleware called Facegen the results were undesirable.

I don't particularly care for characters with carefully crafted makeup, lip gloss, and perfect fingernails and coiffed hair, and who look like they just stepped out of a centerfold of a glossy fashion magazine. I like that the women (and men) don't look idealistically "perfect" and better resemble how people actually look in real life without the help of Photoshop. Now if only the NPCs came in a multitude of different body shapes.

It's hard for me to imagine what people think is wrong with Piper, of all people. She doesn't appear abnormal to me in any way.

Yuck. Easy Women. Well rendered Easy Women, but Easy Women none the less. That's right ladies. I said it. Running around on adventures in high-heels showing enough cleavage to get you arrested at a strip club. That's right. I said it.

And you realize, of course that it was all an illusion to hide what they really were.

Had to edit, apparently my original word (although not particularly bad, was censored?????). Weird.

When they are in their default, still expressions, most faces look fine. It is while they are talking, and/or making facial expressions that supposedly correspond to what they say or feel, that we sometimes see the "awkward look". I suppose the motion capture is less than perfect.

I would take this thread more seriously if you hadn't used Desdemona as a standard of beauty.

Compared to previous Bethesda games, Fallout 4's chicks look like Victoria Secret models.

But generally speaking, I always get the feeling that Bethesda tends to focus on male appearances more.

Those old people in Fallout 3 weren't exactly Psyker nutjobs that have injected every possible drug into their systems either. Maybe the waxy face is what happens when you do all that.

I'll explain the problem for you:

Todd & Pete's claims - "Be whoever you want and do whatever you want."

BGS game reality: horrible character visual aesthetics that do not allow you to create characters that you can empathize with all in the search for some subjective claim of "realism" when the characters most certainly do not look realistic in any way, nor do they need to since the Fallout world is far from realistic.

In short, the problem is lack of player choice in a single player game coupled with completely false marketing claims. This is SOP and modders have always shown how wrong BGS is in their approach (thank goodness for modders, especially our East Asian friends who actually appreciate appealing and empathy-generating character visual aesthetics).

I don't know. I thought the faces in this game have looked pretty good for the most part, both male and female. I thought differently when I was just watching trailers, but when finally playing they don't look all that bad.

Can you really blame them for not implementing endless possibilities in a character creator to the point of which it will fulfill your desires to play as pretty anime characters?

What, you walk down the street in your town and every woman you see is gorgeous? :nope: After 200 years of being irradiated and living on the edge of death daily, eating radroaches and rusty canned food not fit for the gutters of Bangladesh, I'd be shocked if any of the wasteland women looked anything close to a supermodel. Most of them look a bit too nice for the circumstances, to be honest.

Personally I like the way my characters look. I'm restarting with my Melinda tonight and I love her look. Sure it's a bit weird for the tutorial, but, for the wasteland? Perfect.

Maybe the graphics and character modeling aren't up to the "realism" bar that many games have set, but, frankly, I kind of like that not only can I not make my character look like some sort of bizarre "Uber" person, but the rest of the NPCs actually look like real people too. And it's nice to finally play a game where the women don't look like prosttutes or pitbulls and the men look like fashion models/bodybuilders or thug stereotypes.

Not sure what you are talking about OP. The character design in this game is quite good compared to other Bethesda titles. And have you seen what can be made with the character creator? Check out the mod linked a few posts ago.
