Bethesda's Humor

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 2:34 pm

Just wanted to show appreciation for the humor Bethesda put in this game, from the teddy bears in odd positions to the ramblings of your companions - but above all, I love listening to the Diamond City radio announcer. He delivered the following paid message from Choice Chops last night that had me chuckling for longer than it should have:

"WE HAVE MEAT!

JUST MEAT!

Stop asking for anything else!"

Super Mutant orders " Kill. Loot. Return. " That one still has me chuckling.

Yeah, Fallout 4 had its moments, but it's still nothing compared to dark humour delivered by Obsidian or Black Isle Studios. Unfortunately.

Ill give Black Isle Studios an okay on that, but you cant seriously think Obsidian has anything on this game. New Vegas is like a kiddy wading pool for those not used to Fallout, with Fallout 4 being the advlt version and by far superior. Bethesda has more humour in one designer than Obsidian has in their entire staff.

The DJ for Diamond City is hilarious. Once he kicked something and his response was, “GAAH! W-why do my...stuff...KEEP MOOVING!?”

Yeah, I thought a lot of the stuff in New Vegas was a bit cheesy.

Your humour isnt sophisticated, am I right? Nothing can beat Obsidian in writing, especially their dark humour. Oh, and I've got super-duper surprise for you; Black Isle Studios is Obsidian!

I walked into a bathroom and there was a plastic flamingo drinking out of the urinal. Not often do I laugh out loud playing games.

Bethesda has more humour than Obsidian could dare dream of. I mean Fallout 1, 2, even 3 and 4 are great. Fallout New Vegas...played it two times and I was done. Okay gameplay, horrible replay value. I have nearly 2500 hours logged on Fallout 3 and about 127 now on Fallout 4. I have 242 hours logged on Fallout New Vegas with no intentions of ever revisiting it again

Have to agree to disagree there. Bethesda's humor is tongue in cheek in a lot of ways, but I find that much more tolerable to Black Isle/Obsidian's love affair with pop culture references. Fallout 2's so weighed down by them it gets downright nonsensical at times. New Vegas wasn't quite as overt (No Hubologist sequence, thankfully), but I still cringe every time I see Jack and Diane.

*Groan*

Please, we don't have to jump into every discussion with "NEW VEGAS 110% BETTER AT EVERYTHING!!!"

It's just obnoxius.

Anyways, I nearly died laughing when I was killd by a mini-nuke and got the "Touchdown!" trophy.

Forgetting where, but there was this terminal that had patient info. One of the patients came in with a sprained right wrist but wouldn't say how he got it like that. The patient said it was "computer related".

The internet is a goofy place. When Oblivion came out, Morrowind was better. When Fallout 3 came out, tons of old school people claimed Bethesda ruined the series. When New Vegas came out, people didn't think it had as much atmosphere as FO:3. When Skyrim came out, Oblivion AND Morrowind were better. And now FO4 is here, and blah blah blah skyrim was bigger, or New vegas had better writing, etc etc etc

I have adored every single game Bethesda has put out in the last 10+ years. I don't even understand this internet mentality. These games are amazing. Perfect? No. But they are the closest thing to including everything I want in a video game, much much closer than any other developer/publisher.

Why do we have to constantly compare? Just enjoy each one for what it is. If you hate it and prefer an old one, go play that some more and be happy. If you don't like any of them, why the ef would you even be a member?

Merry Christmas

If by "includes TWO staff members who used to work at Black Isle" means Obsidian is Black Isle, then yes. A company, in my view, is the development staff - not the name. And Obsidian is down to two members of Black Isle at this point. Regardless of their legacy, they no longer qualify as Black Isle in my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I love Obsidian. Alpha Protocol is actually one of my favorite games.

Obsidian's humor is different from Bethesda's humor. As someone else said, Obsidian likes to make pop-culture references. Bethesda likes to make tongue-in-cheek jokes. I think Bethesda's humor has a bit more legs to it.

Some of Black Isle's pop culture references feel incredibly dated now when playing through Fallout 2. I think teddy bears screwing and shooting up drugs is more timeless. I mean, it's not running into the crew of the Next Generation, but still.....

Dude I own Fallout New Vegas on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Yeah I have one of each, but only an Xbox One for Fallout 4. And compared to the other Fallout games, New Vegas blows. I mean its a great filler for sure, but that is it. Was a good time wasting tool, but wasnt what I would consider "the best Fallout game". And "Ive definetly never played the game?" Because I disagree with the game as a whole? People will either throughly enjoy a game or not care for it. So if someone has an opinion other than your own...Get over it. I have people who have opinions different than mine ALL the time. And for Fallout: New Vegas, a lot of it was just useless garbage to me. Added to the Fallout lore sure, but after a few playthroughs I was done. Beat all the DLC one time and that was enough as well :) I think Bethesda should stick to the making of Fallout and not outsource anymore IMHO. And the stupidest part was in the DLC Dead Money at the Sierre Madre. The dual-personality Nightkin. Not much planning went into the DLC is all I can say.

The last Obsidian game i throughly enjoyed was Dungeons and Dragons

Course I like the Mass Effect series by BioWare, but they rely sooo much on "love" companionship that it is naseauting at times.

Nothing quite had me giggling so hard as hearing Danse say "Ad Victorium" in that special way after some alone time.

It matches up pretty well the the funniest thing I heard in new vegas, just in a different way. Quoted from Yes Man:

"Then consider them ignored, if they fire their howitzers at us, we'll ignore that too, until it goes away!"

I just about died laughing when I came across this.

I was on the island that is down in the right lower corner of the map. Only way there is to swim (that I know of) and once the mirelurks were all dealt with I was able to interact with the worktable.

So here I am turning this little island into my own personal paradise when I come across an out house. inside the out house was a 210 year old woman skeleton sitting on the toilet. Also dead on her lap was an advlt size 210 year old male skeleton. he was lying on her lap and on top of him was a paddle.

kinky stuff in there I tell ya. I just about lost it.

I missed most of the pop culture references in New Vegas because, frankly, they were old. If 'sophisticated' humor means dated references then yeah sure, whatever. But I also didn't really giggle much at the teddy bears/skeletons in compromising positions either. I think pre-Confidence Man Travis was probably the funniest part that I can immediately call to mind. Maybe a few companion comments.

Lol...I actually found a teddy bear wearing glasses and sitting in on a stack of books like he was learning at the Suffolk County Charter School. Was a bit amusing.
