Bethesda leaving their game broken?

Post » Mon Oct 10, 2011 2:36 am

So I recently got Morrowind for my PC, and when browsing the mods I saw a lot of mods that fix bugs in the game (like thousands of bugs according to the creators) and it made me wonder: Yeah great for the PC players, but what about console players?

Do Bethesda just leave their games after a while and say "modders, fix it for PC. Console owners will be stuck with this broken version that we no longer try to fix". And how many bugs are still in a game like oblivion on console? Do you notice them a lot? Or is the console version of these games less buggy and therefore dont need any more fixing?

I will myself get the game for PS3, so I'm kind of worried....

we have patches.....

To expand on your point though, Bethesda don't consciously think (or at least I hope not), meh, there are a few game breaking bugs in there, oh well. Let's go gold regardless.

Bugs are often specific to platforms, so the bugs on the PC version don't necessarily show up on consoles and vice-versa.

Also, please be careful throwing around the word "broken". "Broken" means that the game doesn't work. It doesn't mean that there are sometimes issues with graphical stutters or stuck NPCs. To be honest, I never experienced enough bugs in Morrowind or Oblivion on PC to ever mod them out.

They're extremely minor bugs that go unnoticed by the naked eye.

Yeah ofc but so does the PC version, still it seems to need modders to fix a lot of bugs... which they cant do on the console version

I played Morrowind on Xbox and I didnt notice too many bugs, i wouldnt worry about it, especialy seeing how Skyrim is going to be more of a console port anyways, game developers know when theydo multi platform games they need to work hardest to ensure it works flawlessly as possiable on consoles cause they can always give the PC gamers a "Were deeply sorry, we are working very hard to blah blah blahity blah"

You had about 3-4 posts that should have soothed your fears.

The bugs that are fixed on PCs are usually incredibly minor, and again, the PC experiences different bugs than console versions. PCs usually have more potential issues because of the many different configurations of hardware and drivers that the developers can't possibly plan for before release.

Also they have a new live update system in place which they adopted from EA Sports, which can be used to quickly fix minor bugs in a matter of hours instead of weeks, such as how long a patch can take. Major crashes will still need to be fixed via patch, but still, this live update system is an improvement over the old measures.

Just because there is a micro bug in a game, doesn't mean it's "broken". If a game is "broken" it means it's so buggy that it's unplayable. The only game breaking bug in Morrowind was the save corruption that happened if you had a lot of saves (i think it was 250+)

The GOTY edition of the games do have some existing bugs, however patches that fix "thousands" of problems are counting very minor problems as well as more substantial bugs. For example, in TES III and IV there are occasional rocks and other scenery that have their untextured undersides partially exposed, and dedicated fans have gone through, found them, and corrected them. They're simple fixes, and most aren't terribly noticeable, which makes their feat that much more impressive for the fans. There are some more substantial bugs as well, I won't pretend that their aren't, but they don't number in the thousands.

No absolutely not steam. They stated a while ago they have a brand new system in place, not steam, which works across all platforms, which they adopted from EA Sports. A Live Update system. EA Sports has used such a system for years for roster updates and tuner updates across their sports titles.

Vanilla Oblivion has a bug that makes it possible to completely break the fighters guild quest line merely by entering a cave before the bugged quest is active.

when i bought oblivion for pc it downloaded the fixes after install and it did the same with the xbox i guess if you don't have wi fi that might be an issue but the bugs are usually minimal issues

The console versions will be fine. Bethesda games aren't as bug-ridden as people make them out to be...

Like many others have said, most of the modded bug fixes are more cosmetic fixes of objects not being seated in the world properly, minor quest fixes, or NPC pathfinding fixes.

With Bethesda's new Live-Fix system.. hopefully the minor bugs can be fixed for consoles now as well.

70,000-80,000 object placements.
1,800-2,200 everything else
200-200 quest
50-100 quest-breaking to questline-breaking
~10 crashes to desktop

These are estimates of course.

"Games Broke, don't care. Y U take our money"

You don't have to buy the game you know. Bethesda creates some of the most complex, technically evolved games that almost always go gold / platinum; you simply have to deal with the fact that all games have some bugs in them, and when the game world is as complex as a Bethesda game there are going to be more because it's not a 17 hour game. If you're looking for a game with as few bugs as possible you should consider downloading the old mario bros games, otherwise; acknowledge that today's games are far more complex and ultimately far more rewarding in terms of satisfaction and entertainment. Venting your frustration in a community site like this where the majority players come to share their excitement about an upcoming product is degenerative to the atmosphere, and while it's your right to say it (so long as you aren't violating a TOS' which you didn't seem to be) consider the following 1) Is it true 2) Is it necessary 3) is it nice, if what you have to say doesnt meet at least two of those standards, what good are you doing saying it?

Between Morrowind and Oblivion, I think I experienced one quest-breaking bug and about 3 crashes to desktop.

Please take sensationalist crap that isn't backed up by any real numbers somewhere else.
