Bethesda, please make the water actually scary this time.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:27 am

Yes... the underwater bits are in serious need of some love. Hidden underwater grottos like in Morrowind, a variety of creatures, schools of fish, Dreugh, shipwrecks, a few chests just sitting on the bottom, a new creature or two, those vampires that pull you underwater. Needs love, Bethesda.

I just implore Bethesda to please make the waters SCARY! Deadly! Not just some pond with goldfish in it! It's the coast of Skyrim, I think it would be fitting to throw in some old Nordic/Celtic/Viking mythological creatures in there. It'd be really fun. :)

I'm thinking the sea monster that Beowulf fights when he crosses the sea to help the Danes. That was epic.
And no, I'm not talking about Angelina Jolie from the movie, all naked and wet.

I'm failing to grasp how hoards of hostile creatures (out to get YOU) in the water adds to the "realism." I think having to deal with the temperature of the water in the colder parts of Skyrim would be more realistic than that.

It's a game. I don't want it to be "real" I want it to simulate reality in some ways, but I also want to have fun.

Yeah, that could be fun. Like the last time I played Morrowind, being trapped in a shipwreck with a single point of HP with a bunch of slaughterfish lurking outside. The only way I could make it out alive was eating a bunch of mushrooms and running for land with the few seconds of water-walking it gave. Good times.

so completely empty seas devoid of life include predatory life is realistic to you? i wouldnt mind having the temperature thing which would correlate nicely with the oft brought up suggestion of a "warmth" meter. but to say adding sea monster into a fantasy game doesnt add realism......

I'd like the shrine to Hermaeus Mora to be underwater, preferably with some suitably Lovecraftian Daedra swimming around. That would rule.

Agree! :)

Well since its supposed to be pseudo Scandinavian I'd like to see lakes, rivers and even the sea to freeze over during the winter season. I'd also like cold water to inflict some sort of hypothermic damage.

Sea monsters don't live a few miles off the coast... they would live deep into the ocean.

Well, there's a more than realistic amount of hostile/dangerous creatures on land in TES games...

Well i agree with this thread entirely, the waters are to calm and peaceful and you don't get any sort of life in their whilst you swim. I want a quest one day that involves like you aiding someone across the lake then to have a giant squid come out of the depths and rip apart everything.

Yah monsters in teh ocean and lakes and rivers, Not like insta kill, monsters or giant super killer super monsters, but monsters.

In the oceans it'd be cool if there were krakens or giant sea snakes.

And underwater treasures and wrecks and stuff. In Oblivion there was no point to breathing underwater than using to escape from enemies sometimes. Also dying of cold from swimming in freezing water would be nice.

Personally, I hope the waters are a peaceful place to explore. I'm not so sure why everyone is always looking to be attacked all the time.

I just want interesting and different places to explore. I'm not looking to be fighting all the time. I won't mind the rare aggressive see creature, here and there, but I shouldn't be prevented from just swimming around and exploring. I do want to see ship wrecks and such return.

Hypothermia would basically attack one's Fatigue and Will.

Being bashed by waves onto ice and rock, tangled by weeds are also threats.

Go rent the movie Orca http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076504/

it'd be cool to have your own boat, or at the very least a boat like mission, where a monster just straight up swallows it. Coolest thing ever would have the leviathan get dragged out of the water and ripped apart by the world eater. it would look EPIC.

Yeah I want waters to be peaceful too. Lots of passive, friendly fishes. A few "lesser" agressive ones too (like slaughterfish).

Sea monsters should only be in deep water. And they should be big, rare, deadly, incredibly strong and terrifying.

Oh I dunno, maybe...a CHALLENGE for once.

The only PC race which should be comfortable in water to explore for the fun of it are the Argonians.

Not just the monsters, there was all that sea floor in OB with no reason to explore it. D o the Nords do that viking thing funerals in a burning boat? They have to sink sometime, with all that lovely armour and other grave goods. I want to see giant squid And underwater Nord chieftain undead.

OH! Now you're talkin'! Sunken treasure, underwater caverns, ancient cities... :goodjob:

I remember in Morrowind, venturing into the water would get you insta-gibbed more than likely if you weren't prepared by a Water Dreugh (sp?). It was thrilling, exciting, and just more realistic.
In Oblivion, the waters were virtually pointless, literally nothing in them to fight except the RARE slaughterfish.

In Skyrim, the northern coast should be full of ridiculous creatures that we should be scared of. I mean, I'm not going to name anything specifically because there could be any number of cool things they could do, I just implore Bethesda to please make the waters SCARY! Deadly! Not just some pond with goldfish in it! It's the coast of Skyrim, I think it would be fitting to throw in some old Nordic/Celtic/Viking mythological creatures in there. It'd be really fun. :)

Scary, sure. However, having a mass amount of slaughter fish and dreugh isn't scary, it's flippin' annoying! I most certainly enjoyed Morrowind when I created my current main, as he is able to water walk and avoid the constant encounter of slaughtering 50 fishies every 3 feet.

However, if there's anything I fear most, it's the depths of the oceans...*shivers*

Yeah.Would be awesome if there would be rare creatures that pull you down to the bottom of the ocean with their tentacles.Pretty scary.

I agree that having to fight through tons of water creatures is just annoying. If there are pockets of them that you need to fight in order to accomplish something, then that is fine. I just don't want to have to be looking over my shoulder all the time when exploring.

I guess this why there are people that install Martigen's Monster Mods and those of us that prefer to install passive wildlife mods instead.

I would like to see a huge turtle, as big as an island with a forest growing on it. it wouldn't dive but travel along the coast. Possibly used for a quest line =D
