Bethesda, please make the water actually scary this time.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:16 am

I remember in Morrowind, venturing into the water would get you insta-gibbed more than likely if you weren't prepared by a Water Dreugh (sp?). It was thrilling, exciting, and just more realistic.
In Oblivion, the waters were virtually pointless, literally nothing in them to fight except the RARE slaughterfish.

In Skyrim, the northern coast should be full of ridiculous creatures that we should be scared of. I mean, I'm not going to name anything specifically because there could be any number of cool things they could do, I just implore Bethesda to please make the waters SCARY! Deadly! Not just some pond with goldfish in it! It's the coast of Skyrim, I think it would be fitting to throw in some old Nordic/Celtic/Viking mythological creatures in there. It'd be really fun. :)

A fun easter egg would be encountering a squid like creature that looks suspiciously like the Elder God.

This is one things Im hoping for. I hope the fact that the entire Northern part of Skyrim is water will encourage the devs to pay a bit more attention to it this time around.

Not just the monsters, there was all that sea floor in OB with no reason to explore it. D o the Nords do that viking thing funerals in a burning boat? They have to sink sometime, with all that lovely armour and other grave goods. I want to see giant squid And underwater Nord chieftain undead.

Infernal City mentions Seadrakes, which sound a lot like Mosasaurs. Wouldn't mind seeing those out in deeper water. Would fit with the sort of primal, ice-age, prehistoric feel they seem to be going for. It mentions sharks too, so they apparently exist on Nirn.

Something huge like a Kraken at the button of Sea of Ghosts would be a nice surprise. :)

But I hope to see more populated under-waters, and more variety to the critter types down there, and some real monsters.

I'm failing to grasp how hoards of hostile creatures (out to get YOU) in the water adds to the "realism." I think having to deal with the temperature of the water in the colder parts of Skyrim would be more realistic than that.

Love it, hope there's some island or something for us to swim/sail there while dodging monsters like that.

Yes yes yes! But...

1) First add lots of fishes. Normal, friendly, passive fishes.

2) Add a few hostile fishes, a few bigger ones and a few smaller ones (slaughterfish for instance).

3) Add SEA MONSTERS to the deepest depths of water. They should be rare, deadly, big, incredibly strong and terrifying!

Small lakes and that are fine. You should feel pretty safe. BUT THE DEEP WATERS! THOSE YOU SHALL FEAR! :D

Agreed. Throw in some sea serpents and stuff, I'm in.

Also, the Kraken was actually sighted near the coast of Norway in the 18th or 19th century I think, so such creatures can definitely survive that far north.
In general though, squids and similar don't like it up here. I live near the coast of the Baltic Sea, of course, so I've never seen one. I've heard that there may be very small squids near the western coast, in the Atlantic.

In short, I'm all for more marine life.
I'll make sure to stay out of the water in Skyrim.

I'd like the shrine to Hermaeus Mora to be underwater, preferably with some suitably Lovecraftian Daedra swimming around. That would rule.

I agree. Take some inspiration from mythological beasts. A smaller version of Kraken, perhaps? Or enormous turtles. Make me scared.

Oh, good point!

Yes, I used to find the dreughs in Morrowind a little irritating and it was nice in Oblivion to be able to go for a swim. I really loved diving in Fallout: New Vegas and seeing harmless shoals of fish, which I thought was more "realistic" than anything else. Yes, the occasional aquatic monster would be cool - but I like the idea of hypothermia being a threat.

I'd rather see water temperature and at least an encumberance factor play a part. I never liked being able to swim in full plate.

just dont fill water with slaughterfish for the love of god.

by 'dangerous water' I thought you meant rapid's washing you away like in a flash flood... this would be better than fighting off hordes of slaughterfish.

The whole aspect of the Nords burning their dead on ships and having them sink, that just opens up to so much gameplay and underwater exploration. I just want to have something to fight while down there plundering. :D

I don't think anyone said anything about "hoards of hostile creatures out to get you and only you". I said some. Because Oblivion had 0.
Guess what? The ocean in real is full of nasty things that will kill you. I didn't say fill the oceans of Skyrim with blood thirsty heatseeking radar monsters that instantly zone in on your location and eat your face. I said monsters. That attack you. I don't see how that's not realistic, and just like real life. Because monsters in the ocean attack people.
I don't see how you can misconstrue that.
