Bethesda should warn left handed players - Do Not Buy

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 1:37 pm

I can't remap my keys so that I can control the game as a left handed player. If you're going to screw players, buy us dinner first.

I know there is a hack using Auto hotKey but I didn't drop $60 to have to go and figure a way around lazy porting of console controllers to PC.

It's sad.

I'm hoping this is just an oversight, and will be fixed soon.

If not, I'll have to push for a refund from Steam.

Being left handed I know that we have had to adapt to a right handed world all our lives. We end up having to learn to cut right handed, sit at right handed desks, use right handed ladles and measuring cups. I sure don't expect after a lifetime of adapting I'll get too bent out of shape over adapting to a game.

Some say it's what makes us left hander's a tad smarter, our forced ability to adapt.

Why can't you just adapt? Theres no such thing as left handed cars so why do you need a left handed gamepad?

I don't think it's a game pad issue, it's a binding the keys to other keys issue.

I am right handed, but old school, and use the arrow keys.

I see the lefties out there saying some of them will adapt, and I'll have to adapt also to the stupid wasd keys, but the point here is, you shouldn't have to adapt.

Binding keys is a PC basic, and every game has that ability, and this was either an oversight by Bethesda, or they just got it wrong.

Which would be wonderful if everyone had them in their kitchens. Home Ec. class in school...nope, not there. Soup kitchens I've volunteered at...nope, none there. My late Mother's kitchen...nope.

It was easier to adapt than to go out and buy all new stuff at a higher price after having spent my life raised in a right handed home, school and world.

I generally bind RDFG instead of WASD giving me a nice cluster around my movement keys and having one of the "home keys," f, find-able via touch, and gladly gave up arrow keys once the option to do so came about. So few keys clustered around the arrow keys. But I digress. I just have to deal with less keys clustered around my preferred placement. Lefty AND can't use my preferred layout. Ah well.

I'm left handed and didn't notice anything. I'm sorry you're having issues. I've been playing PC games for so long using the mouse in my right hand that I think it would be harder to use it left handed! Man, I hope I don't play the game later and suddenly notice something annoying! Ha.

I′m forced to using my left hand at the moment (right hand is paralyzed from a stroke) and I didn′t run into too many issues.

Lefty adaptation aside, unmappable keys never sit well with people. It's a key mapping... why is it suddenly becoming so taboo to allow people to change keys? FO4 is not the only game guilty of this, Heck, FO:NV would not let you Remap "2", the second hotkey, which was hard-coded as "swap ammo".

As much as it's not a big deal for me being a right handed fellow, I do feel for the OP. Has anyone ever complained about having too much control over their key configuration? has anybody ever seen an option menu and though "this is too much control, this needs to be removed"

I am left handed and use the mouse in my right hand.

One dear to me is also left handed and uses the mouse in his left hand.

erm i'm left-handed but can only use a mouse in my right-hand, if i had bought FO4 on pc (and had a decent pc to run it) instead of the ps4 version i wouldn't have a problem it.

Also disappointing is the number keys are not re-mappable. I have a Razer naga and it would be really nice if I could use the number buttons on the sidewall, but none of the number buttons are mappable.

Many keys are combined in silly ways (bash/grenade) or do too many things (tab has three different functions in the same part of the construction menu). That's just lazy, half-done, phoned-in console porting.

Blocking a chunk of the keyboard from rebinding isn't lazy, it's deliberate, and it's a mistake they had to fix when they released Skyrim, and they did it again.

Also, there are problems with AHK, I rebound the VATS key and it now only works in construction areas. Simple one-key-for-another rebind, nothing fancy.

As far as adapting, I wish console designers would "adapt" a controller with a few more buttons so most new games aren't crippled with the "everything button" disease.

edit: Also, this is an example of why game reviews are useless, unless someone can point out the dozens of reviews I missed that pointed out the crippled PC port interface. I mean, I figured out this problem before I even created a character.

We shouldn't have to adapt just to play a videogame on the PC. Global keybinding is common place in practically every game on the market. Yeah we do have to adapt in the real world, but this could have been easily avoided if they just let us rebind all keys. Plus this issue doesn't just affect left handed players. There's a thread started on this forum about a disabled guy who only has one hand. He simply cannot play the game now due to the hard coding of keys.

Also please air your views on this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1544180-keypad-bindingrage/the more names the better.

Also Summer could you possibly merge all these keybinding threads and possibly sticky it as it seems to be a very common thread.

It's my impression that handedness varies greatly in degree and how it manifests, i.e. what you can comfortably do with each hand. I'm a leftie for whom WASD and a mouse in my right hand is no hardship. I don't think that because some of us can adapt relatively easily that the same is true for others. Just because you are personally left-handed doesn't mean that your experience is comparable to someone else's.

And, actually, I would expect folks to be more rather than less bent out of shape over adapting to a game, as games are expected to be actively enjoyable--and because its been made clear by numerous games that rebinding is doable. Of course, folks adapt when they have to, but Fallout 4 has demonstrated over and over that its not interested in supporting much of the fanbase, whether its those with slow Internet, monitors with resolutions other than 16:9 or 16.10, folks with vision issues who benefited greatly from in-game brightness adjustments in Beth's previous titles, or those who have physical difficulty with their key choices, for whatever reason. I've been a fan for a long time, but I'm extremely disappointed by the attitude suggested by these choices.

Great good luck to you. I'm glad that you're able to find a way to enjoy FO4 and gaming in general.

As a retiree, I worry about things like that and how I'd adapt to it.
