Bethesda Strongest Facet in their Game Design

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 8:24 pm

We too often see Beth bashing threads, so I decided to begin a thread to actually congratulate them on what they did good. For me it's simple, the Lore and Mythos of the world, it doesn't feel too much like borrowing from Toilken, nor does it come across as too generic.

Anyone else feel this about lore, or an other asset of the games design.

Oh yes, I love the lore. The music is always mindblowing for TES ( though its technicly Jeremy Soule, I know ) and except for Cyrodill maybe, where they dropped the ball a bit. I think they have created two visually inspiring worlds with Skyrim and Vvardenfell.

What?! How can you say that Oblivion had music that was amazing in my opinion it was better than Skyrim's and Morrowind's music. Skyrim's battle music beats Oblivion's though that is for sure.
I would say Bethesda is really good at detail and the minor things.

World-design and exploration, if you count that as a facet. Lore in itself is alright, though I don't like the presentation of lore in most TES games.

The vast numbers of things that you can encounter that have nothing to do with any quest, Main or Faction, Misc. or otherwise, just totally depth-for-th-sake-of-depth features, NPCs, stories, situations, etc. It blows my mind how much stuff there is that, really, isn't essential to the game, but rather work to make the game full.

Sorry, my post is poorly put together. What I mean to say is that the world in Oblivion isn't as inspiring. The music is right up there with Skyrim's. Though I still love Morrowinds music most thanks to "Nerevar Rising" and "The road most travelled".

Well here is my opinion.

Strongest facet, creating a unique and interesting world with interesting Lore.

Weakest facet, creating a believable world with realistic interactions between people and their environment that keeps their own Lore in balance. Like only having one sign of a culture that is supposed to be as prevalent as the Ayleids. The Falmer. All we see is a statue of that period. Any other signs are just devolved falmer. Where are the real Falmers artifacts and ruins. Where is the little nuggets of their history? Saying the Nords destroyed them all is ignorant and unrealistic. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Snow_Prince disproves them destroying everything. Just seems like a huge lore hole they just ran out of time for so didn't do it.
