Bethesda: The hair in Skyrim looks absolutely awful, I'm sor

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:11 am

I think it's our duty to [censored] about these kind of things, but I don't care about this thing specifically. It could, and maybe should be better, but I'm less concerned about the physics of the hair and more concerned with the physics of pretty much everything besides the hair

You hearing this Bethesda?

Next elder scrolls better be all about hair.

Yeah, because that was insinuated many times in this thread right.

Admitedly, I didn't even notice... at all, untill you pointed it out. :P Everything else was just too stunning.

However, the movement shots are discouraging, if you watch the trailer again, the hair does move at least somewhat freely (hard to tell cause he has short hair in all the screens.). So, I have hope that at least they aren't stepping back from Oblivion. And I think we'll all be caught up in stairing at the faces, now that they aren't... terrible in every way. :P

Every single thread I've seen that has attempted to discuss the graphics of Skyrim in any sort of critical manner has become flooded with posts of either "I don't care about graphics" or "Show me one better." Neither of which are helpful or at all pertain the discussion people are trying to have. And usually the thread gets flooded to the point that it drops because a real discussion proves impossible.

Anyways, to the discussion trying to be had, the Ren's hairs made what? Four or five years ago? Look better than what we have seen so far.

True, but it would look a lot better if it wasn't...

I don't think the hair is as bad as the OP thinks it is. I do however think they could do a much better job. Some nice free flowing hair would be just a nice added polish to the game's already gorgeous graphics. Something better would be much appreciated.

I don't think he meant to troll, or be negative at all. I think he was just trying to comfort you by putting things in perspective. Ya, sure, the hair isn't perfect, by hey, the rest of the game is. :D

Hmm? I've never really noticed. And now that you mention it, I don't really care. I'll be far to busy trying to jump out of the way of a dragon's gaping jaws to notice that my hair is low polly.

Hair physics is not "never before seen", though.

It has never been seeing with awsomesause though. Context. Context. :P

But no, what I meant when I said that was like anime cutscene separate strand flying every which way. That's the kinda hair physics that's never been seen ingame. Eventually its could very well happen, but it'll be a while. Even longer for a game on Skyrim's scale.

But yes, I don't need Skyrim to be the most advanced game on the market, still, if some things that Bethesda has shown us aren't up to the standards we'd expect the game to be able to do, going by the rest of what we've seen, I think it's reasonable to point this out, after all, it might just be that after we point it out, Bethesda will decide that we have a point, and decide to try to improve it, or maybe they won't, we'll see, but if Bethesda doesn't know there's a problem at all, then we can be sure nothing will come of it.

Either way, I think we all have a right to have our own opinion on what we've seen of the game, even if that opinion isn't necessarily loving everything we've seen without exception.

I'm not saying you don't have the right. You do. I just also have the right to say I really don't care. Creating hair that doesn't clip must be hell, I can only imagine the pain and suffereing the devs go through. Especially now that it may be possible to see hair under helmets or hoods. I can only imagine nightmares when I try to think up that scenario. I'm glad I don't have their job, very very glad.

I hope for cool looking hair that fits with the races and moves a little too...but for me I'm going to have a helmet or a hood on anyway. Its just my opinion that I really...really don't care to much either way.

Screenshot 2 is the only one worth having a problem with imo. But it's kind of tricky to tell with it. I'm just happy there's actually a strap thing for his quiver :D

Yea, definately could improve, but its not game breaker. I would rather have bad hair than loose an extra 5 FPS to have my hair swaying in the breeze.

I actually kind of agree. I didn't really think about all the clipping issues it would cause. That is certainly a major concern for something I would consider somewhat low priority to begin with.

People keep saying it's not important, but honestly, it is important, to more people than probably just me.
Because if I have to play a character that looks like http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/elderscrollsvskyrim/images/0/13/?full_size=1, I'm probably not going to play it that long. That looks *hideous* on all levels. It may not be a big deal for you, but that is a huge deal for me. There's no reason for it to look that horrible.

I don't typically see much better-looking hair in video games. The exception would be Final Fantasy XIII. I liked the way the hair in that game moved, as though with the wind, and seemed to flow like real hair, but that game doesn't have changeable armor/clothing, so they didn't really have to worry much about clipping. In addition, my characters will all have very dark hair, meaning I really won't notice many details on the hair itself. It doesn't really look too good. I agree with that. However, I've played few games with good hair, so I can live with the hair we've seen so far.

screenshots come out. people [censored] about textures. Bethesda says they're all from the 360, and PC textures will be higher.

trailer comes out. people [censored] about the water. they then realize they're whitewater rapids and shut up.

nothing for a while. trees look nice, fog looks nice, everything looks great. the only thing we can [censored] about is the hair.

this forum is so painfully predictable.

Now, the one screenshot of the woman in the tavern looks good. But, she's also not moving. It looks as if the hair is a part of the bodies skeleton this time around, and that is a horrible, HORRIBLE idea. People did this 10 years ago, not today. It's an old style of doing hair.

...are you actually trying to infer how moving hair will look like from a still picture? Are you [censored] kidding me? You have NO clue what you are talking about

http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/115/1158651/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110330052314715.jpg

This picture looks perfectly fine. Maybe a bit stiff but that's not that problematic

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/elderscrollsvskyrim/images/0/13/?full_size=1
Again, the same deal. Amazing detail in the arm, clothes, animal, the surroundings, it all looks breathtaking. Really good job...
...except the hair. And again, WHAT on earth is the deal? This legimitely looks like a fake screenshot to me, because again, the hair looks NOTHING like the rest of this game. The hair folds and bends in creases as the backbone moves, like it's mapped to the body instead of freemoving. That looks hideous.

Granted, this one looks silly. Then again long hair almost always looks silly anyway (on men). Then again, I always thought he was wearing a hood and remain unconvinced that he is not.

My god, is this 1996? Did someone photoshop a screenshot from a game on the N64 onto the back of this mans head?

Again, you show yourself to be idiotic.

I'm not even going to dig up 1996 quality hair because I'm sure you understand how stupid your comment is already

For some reason i always saw the guy in pic 2 as wearing a hood.... but now that i look at it i guess it is hair... slightly disappointing... But then again, i've never liked bethesda's hair choices in any of their games. (sad really, i would love my character to have an awesome head of hair) :(

Yeah, it seems that everytime Bethesda releases new screenshots, people have to just pick out something that doesn't look quite right. Is it a gamebreaker? No. It's not.
And don't tell me it'll ruin "immersion" because it's just hair. If you want to pay attention to that, fine, but I'm going to be paying attention to the combat itself, A.K.A gameplay.

For whatever reason, western RPG devs like Bethesda and Bioware have always, consistently had terrible hair modeling. It seems only the Japanese care about decent looking hair.

Say what you will about Final Fantasy, but those devs at least put some real care into making the hair look better than the typical "plastic hair helmet" that we've come to expect over here.

Its seems like thats all they focus on

Regardless I will be playing Redguard so Im sure my character will get the shaft as is the norm in TES. But yes - the hair doesnt seem that impressive and I dont see BGS putting physics on the longer cuts. Maybe in Fallout 4...

Because I’m obviously a person who solves problems let me let me help you out here;

Hate the hair? Here are some ways to deal with it.

1. Get over it.
2. Wear some sort of head piece.
3. There will be hair mods soon after release.
4. Get over it.
5. Understand that most people would rather not sacrifice FPS for hair that they probably won't notice anyway.
6. The game is like, 8 months till' release, and you have no idea what the finished product will look like. Stop freaking out over things while you lack any real confirmation
7. Lrn2getoverit.
