Bethesda wants to bring mods to consoles (Thread #3)

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:18 am

Bethesda's Todd Howard said that the content made with the Skyrim Creation Kit would work on consoles just as well as it would the PC; it was, after all, the tool that Bethesda had used to make the game. The problem, Howard said, was that there wasn't an avenue for delivering the content to console gamers yet, but that Bethesda was talking with Microsoft and Sony in order to try and make it happen. Even if these efforts were successful however, he didn't think it would be something that would be up and running in time for the game's launch in November.

""We'd like to see it happen," he said. "Because it works, it's how we made the game. I think it's something really cool about what we do, but 90% of our audience is on the consoles, so 90% of our audience can't even see this thing. So if we can solve that we'd like to."

Read the OP again and make sure you realize he said CONTENT MADE on the CK works on the 360 as does PC, not A CK for 360.

also realize Oblivion mods are not Maps, or skins or ingame user created mish mash from halo reach or some such.

this is altering how the game works adding and subtracting.

to go even further such as OBSE you need thrid party programs, now your in Microsofts and Sony's territory when it comes to the console, and they aren't going to let modders access critical aspects of the consoles for mods, by passing security etc etc.

also realize mods on Consoles effectively null the need for DLC, Microsoft and sony -will- want to profit from this, and essentially Beth says the Want, not that they could, and they have to consult Microsoft before anything.

so yeah.

and lets keep the flaming and snide comments down.

I'd like to see this happen, but I have a tough time seeing Microsoft and Sony agreeing to it. Stonewalling from those two companies has stopped more good ideas than anything else.

I'd actually be a little heart broken if this were to happen. One of the sole reasons the PC market is so attractive is the fact that Beth always includes mod support with their releases. Since the TES series and the Fallout series have hardly even fully utilized the high end, enthusiast-level hardware many PC players buy, one of the main things separating the PC from the consoles is the fact that there is a massive modding community. On a PR side, I don't see this being a very affective move to sustaining their PC market share. Why would anyone be swayed into building a $1000 PC if the benefits of doing so are the same as buying a $199 console?

:brokencomputer:

That's my 2 cents.

 Let me guess, your a PC user. Why would Todd Howard waste his time trying to make this happen if he didnt think he had a chance to make it happen? I guess he should have checked with you first.

If they can pull it off, I don't see why not. Sounds like a great ambition.

I highly doubt mods as demanding as higher res textures and higher poly models will be available on a console, like they are on a PC. Consoles are highly limited in terms of memory and graphical capabilities, so unless you upgrade your console somehow, this sounds quite unlikely.

How about we stop using PC gamer and Console gamer, your playing the damn game arent you? I have a 360 and PS3 thank you, but Im getting Skyrim for PC and if you read the post instead jumping down my throat you'd see it was informative not against for For Mods on consoles, quite frank I don't care if they get it or not I just want it to be known its not a simple affair in anyway.

I doubt it will ever happen. I can only imagine the hordes of console users that would break their game and call Microsoft or etc. Another point would be 'advlt' content mods. I am pretty sure Microsoft and etc wouldn't want to deal with that potential headache. (I can already see foxnews downloading a nudity mod and claiming microsoft is offering porm to underage people.) edit: They'd also be dealing with all those problems without getting paid for it. I don't see Microsoft doing anything without a monetary reason.

Also, even if by some miracle they allowed user generated content onto their platform, it wouldn't allow you to use obse or the skyrim equivalent. So console users would still be denied most of the really unique mods.

I think user created content is a big feature that needs to be addressed by each console overall but I think in the mean time it would be cool to see Bethesda submit the most popular user created mods as their own content by working with mod developers to come up with a license.

They already have content developers, they aren't just going to hire these people our of the blue. The logistics alone would be chaotic, seeing as these modders can be anywhere in the world. Why license content when you can make it yourself for much cheaper.

sounds to me like bethesda just needs to pony up and make a console of their own. they could call it "tamriel" and it can only play bethesda games

I really hope Bethesda can pull this off even if its three months down the line from Skyrims release! i would happily pay M$ 20 quid to be able to mod the game on console to my hearts content!

Reposting from the first thread, with edits:

My only problem with mods on consoles is the community. The PC community is much more private and mature, and despite that we have quite a few jerks who flame mods and modders, as well as a huge number of people who make life hard for us by not reading the documentation, asking the same questions, asking us to change the mod to accommodate their personal desires, etc. This is not necessarily due to some sort of superiority complex on my part - many people choose consoles mainly for their plug-and-play nature, and because of this aren't familiar with the inner workings of the game. Only the simplest mods can be installed by dragging a file into a folder - and even those can conflict, or be dirty, or require an earlier/later/different version of the game. Its a lot to keep track of, especially when you don't have the tools and freedom of a PC. If the PC community only makes up 1/10th of the game, I hate to image how many immature, or simply unlearned, mod users there will be in the other 9/10th.
