I’m still deciding on what platform I will buy my skyrim copy. Unless it’s 100% confirmed that consoles will get mods, free of charge (as howard proposed); I will buy my copy on PC.

Unless I overlooked something, I see it happening though:

Skyrim’s market share is devided by 3 players: PS3, Xbox and PC. Both Xbox and PC are MS, PS3 is Sony.

Sony(*) can increase its market share by accepting what Howard proposed(PC users to PS3). Xbox will have to go along to counter the strategy.

I’m probably not the only who is thinking about choosing a PC version just to get mods(**). So there might be a market trend where console users shift to PC; thus increasing MS’s market share.

Given the assumption about the market trend from console to PC is correct, It might not be a bad idea for Sony to try and make this work.

(*) Xbox has no reason to accept, as it doesn't matter for MS's marketshare if a consumer plays on windows or on Xbox
(**) especially if you know there are organisations out there like SureAI who make great total conversions of TES games. You basically get 2 games for the price of one.

Microsoft makes money off of the xbox for both hardware and software sales. For the PC, they get some money when somebody purchases a windows license, and never anything else. The gaming division of MS may as well be a separate company, both in how they act and how they get revenue.

If it works, and works well, why does it matter? There is a lot of angst against the possibility of consoles getting mods. Also some people are getting too excited too soon. It's only a possibility at this moment, far from certain. Don't overhype yourselves for it.

This could open alot of opportunities up for people, especially the modders. Someone also said it would be laggy...why?...why if they do this would they release content that would scupper performance. As i said many, many times ,they have new tools and techniques now.I don't see why some of you PC user's have a problem, must be jealousy. Why should other people miss out because of your selfishness. It could be good for everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if this will get even bigger on the next gen of consoles, and i wouldn't be surprised if these next gen consoles have upgrades too. If this opens up opportunities for modders why wouldn't they want to take advantage of it? Even if it doesn't happen now or on this gen,it's a step in the right direction.Where there is money to be made, both microsoft and sony will be on it like flies around [censored].

How do we know bethesda won't hire or create a modding team? If it indeed it does happen,of course.

So Microsoft will be making money from the mods we create?

There are so many potential culprits when this happens. Each and every mod has to be checked and tested before releasing them for a console: on dirty edits, framerate issues (heavily cluttered areas or too many AI packages running), no direct support from the mod creator, rogue scripts, compatabilty with other mods etc. Such things can easily be fixed with the (third party) modding tools available for the PC mod user, but not for the console user. When looking at some of the Oblivion DLC's it's save to say that Beth isn't that mod savy to be honest.

New models and textures are also a problem, as those are the intellectual properties of the creators and have nothing to do with the Creation Kit.

It's pretty clear they need to lay down some specific rules for themselves before unleashing any kind of user made mod for the consoles.

I'm pretty sure that if Bethesda manages to pull this off - which is unlikely concerning the stance of Sony and Microsoft - then it means that mods made on the PC can be ported to the console someone, not that the console will be able to run the CK.

One issue with mods is that people can create a 'click button to get all achievements/trophies' mod. Steam achievements aren't that big of a deal, but Microsoft/Sony probably won't like it. Maybe only a couple mods selected specifically by Bethesda will make it to the consoles, assuming this works out.

I'm down for the mods, as long as I only have to buy my two copies (360 and PC). Other than that, I'm not interested in paying extra fees for mods on the 360.

They don't have to make money from the mods, Microsoft is already so huge that the extra grands they would get from mods isn't going to effect the economy of the company in wany way. The mods you create with the creation kit, yes, no other mods would be possible. We are talking about new weapons and armors and stuff like that. Everything is about money these days.. Even when you won't actually get any either way. :/ I sure hope they ARE free, makes no sense to have mods cost.

I sure hope not. Last thing I want to see is my mods being dumbed down for console as well.

It would never happen because of the certification process everything that goes on consoles has to go though. Notice how patches come out weeks later on the Xbox and ps3?

Else some modder could write code that could do bad things to a console, and Bethesda would be at fault for it. Not to mention this would cut big time into Beth's DLC profits on the consoles. Lets also not forget, the on the 360 you have to move heaven and hearth to put up something that is a free download, in fact beth would have to pay microsoft to put up a free mod.

It would be no different than DLC,if it does indeed happen. It's a possiblity,we'll see where it goes.

It would be awesome if this would actually be the case.
Sure, Consoles may not be able to run super high-end graphics or texture mods, but they can support mods such as additional quests, items, spells, more customisation and perhaps even new areas.
And to be honest, I couldn't care for less for those extreme graphic mods.

I am all for a way to bring user made content to consoles, but as long as this means the editor remains unhindered for PC users. It's bad enough game developers are using six year old systems as a benchmark for a PC game. I understand that they have a game to market, and a profit to gain from their labor so of course they will focus on the common demographic denominator, but Bethesda made their name and grew their company off of the PC market. Any loyalty or love there? Todd Howard is quickly pissing me off. My only hope is that an indy developer runs with the crpg. Piranha Bytes completely trashed their franchise, Arkane looked promising but unfortunately are owned by the same parent company. Perhaps Frictional will fill the vacuum...

If I can move a mod from the PC to Xbox 360, I'm bringing something like Kratos into the 360

So when Todd says later, could he mean for Skyrim say a year from now, or TES VI?

I don't think we would have mods for console like Graphic Extender, but mods that add weapons or houses to the game. Maybe some event scripts so new quests could be added in. Minor stuff is better than nothing at all, so even if it's just a new weapon like a Darth Maul Sword or house, is a good start. Baby steps for consoles just like how Morrowinds Plug-ins were baby steps for DLC.

People keep posting that is OK that mods on console would be limited, it'd just be great to have them at all. Well, not only do the majority (and darn close to 100% of the ones that are really good) of the mods I have include high poly, high res, ini tweaking, OBSE using, script intensive, and/or OBGE using elements, the whole thing could never even possibly be remotely feasible without OBMM and Wrye Bash to utilize the compression/archive methods (like OMOD) set he load order and create the bash patch to make all the mods work together. It actually takes a lot of third party elements to get mods to actually work, and actually requires a fairly good level of PC use capability and a learning curve on the part of the user of the mods to get things to work, not only the modders to make them.

I've also modded mods extensively, taking amazing work done by other folks that are incompatible or out of sync with my vision for my game, and shoehorned them all together with my own edits to their files for my personal use. There have been many times where I've had to provide my own bugfix or like/dislike change for mods. Many times, I have to back up files all over the place to ensure I install all of the mods in the correct order, and its a PITA even with Windows Explorer... I can't imagine trying to do it with some limited custom interface.

I don't think its pessimistic to say that the VAST majority of user-created mods would fall into any number of categories of being unacceptable on some level for Microsoft or Sony to be willing to release. They'd have to heavily police what goes on the database because the game would instantly get an advlt Only rating if modders are allowed to still have the freedom they did for OB for one. People are going to break their game and not know how to fix it and flood Tech Support with a billion unanswerable questions about why their game is crashing and why they have purple people and WTF stickers all over their game.

I'm not saying that I'm selfish and don't want console users to have mods... I first played OB on a console and wished so badly to have mods. I bought OB again on PC when I got the money together for a gaming rig and I couldn't be happier with it. IF it could be done right without breaking everyone's console game and actually allow them to use mods as intended. IF it didn't limit the mods that are created because the tools capabilities are cut back or the QA process stifles modders creativity and will to go on, I'd say that all are welcome to it and I'm happy for you.

I think people who have no experience using mods VASTLY underestimate the problems and near impossibilities associated with this endeavor though.

id be fine paying a couple bucks for good mods on my ps3... extra weapons, armor, cloths, places, quests, bug fixes i can see all those happening. maybe some small texture stuff but not sure how those are going to be regulated but im not as crazy about the texture mods as i am with content and i see no reason the consoles couldnt handle those...

You touched on a lot of good points there. My main worry about opening up mods to consoles would be the decrease in quality of mods coming out. Even fairly routine or simple mods like adding a new weapon to the game would see an overall decrease in quality since they would be restricting themselves in what they make. Lower poly counts, smaller textures, etc. just so their mod can run on the console.

Getting mods on console would be just about the worst thing I could imagine happening to Skyrim since mods are such a huge part of my enjoyment in Oblivion.

In games that have allowed console mods before (such as UT3), achievements/trophies were disabled when mods were enabled.

You're obviously a PC hugger, that does not wish to share a better game experience with everyone else. Sad really. It's not set in stone either, but what's the harm in it,if everyone get's to enjoy extra content. I'm getting a little sick of the attitude towards consoles and console user's. It seems no matter what you PC user's always have something to complain about....if you like shooting yourselves in the foot....go ahead, good luck to you.

I am and proud of it.

The vanilla game is already shackled to the restrictions of the console platforms. If my not wanting the mod'ing aspect of the game to end up shackled with the same restrictions makes me selfish, I'm fine with that. If my not wanting my game experience lessened and cheapened overall makes me selfish, again I am fine with that.

Why should I sacrifice my enjoyment of the game because other folks don't want to take an option already available to them (buy the game on PC if you want mods)?

I'll have to guess, since I'm way over my head here.

In Guitar Hero, Sony and Microsoft let's you download coustom songs for free. The size of the files are very small though.

So, I would say that this is possible aslong as the mods are small and Bethesda pays Sony and Microsoft for the bandwith.

Tell me if I'm completely wrong here.
