Bethesda wants to bring Skyrim mods to Consoles

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:20 am

This seems different from the other thread which is talking about console players or numbers or something...I couldnt find anything on this using search...If this has been done already I assume I'll know in the the next few minutes....

So Todd has stated that the Bethesdayteam is working with Microsoft (and Sony too) to find a way to bring Skyrim mods created in the Creation Engine to consoles. He hopes that he can bring the mods to consoles since so many people in their audience use them, but is skeptical that they will be able to find a solution before the release date. Heres a few short articles where I got this information.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109378-Bethesda-Wants-Skyrim-Mods-on-Consoles
http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-features/55462-skyrim-mods-could-run-on-consoles

""We'd like to see it happen," he said. "Because it works, it's how we made the game. I think it's something really cool about what we do, but 90% of our audience is on the consoles, so 90% of our audience can't even see this thing. So if we can solve that we'd like to."

This really has me excited now...

I imagine it would work something like the Halo3/ Halo Reach fileshare: a big archive of all mods which you can upload your mod to, then users can choose what to download from that fileshare (i'm guessing there will be a mod-size limit though)

My guess on cost is this: if this system is created, it will cost money to get to the Fileshare menu (like the Mass Effect 3 Cerberus Network if you didnt buy a new copy). That was 15 bucks, I would be willing to pay that if I could have access to mods. I imagine almost every console gamer would buy this because its so cool.....and right there you have made $15 x (# of gamers in millions) = $$$. Plus, I'm sure they'll create their own DLC so it would be quite profitable all around.

Only Microsoft? Hell hath no fury like me breaking down Bethesda's doors in an enraged state over the PC and 360 getting mods and DLC with the PS3 getting nothing, so answer wisely. :stare:

If consoles every get any user-generated content from the creation kit (very unlikely), it will be severely limited and likely cost money.

I have no idea how a PS3 or 360 could handle Oblivion Graphics extender or any of Ren's Hair geeze any of the mid to low poly armor on Tes Nexus , go figure a high poly one , but if Todd says is possible well lol Skyrim will be the best looking game ever i can't wait to see the hair of the npc! :spotted owl:

Really guys i have a PS3 and a 360 if they are going to release mods for them they sould make a different Contruction Set , a limited one with no .Nif import/modification options , no texture replacing , well we would have to use just what is in there with some kind of meter to tell us when we have added enough stuff to blow up our consoles. :shakehead:

Take a look at TES Nexus see the mods there look at the hairstyles and the armor/weapons and tell me that a console can run it over the game. With a different and limited construction set it would be a different story. This is just my opinion :violin:

So with a different Construction set is possible yes i believe , with the current one no :turtle:

Maybe so, but at least popular modders would earn some revenue from their labors.

There are problems, but one thing I like about the idea is this: if I were playing Oblivion on the XBox, I'd love to be able to download Obscura's Oblivion Overhaul (or some other mod which fixes the level scaling).

No doubt the mods which become available for consoles will be very limited and very selective. And they'll probably be expensive. But it might turn out that there are some mods which are just essential to one's enjoyment of the game (like OOO is for me). That would be a good feature to have for console players.

In the articles it says Beth is trying to work with both Microsoft AND Sony. The OP just forgot to type it i guess.

As for Mods I have both PS3 and Xbox 360 so I'd like if even a few mods were made available. Mostly I would like the ones that fix bugs and other problems. For actual content I would like the extra equipment options for the most part. More weapons, armor, clothes and character customizing would make the game way more enjoyable. Quests and extra buildings could be nice but the consoles may not be able handle content like that. Consoles have never had this done so its hard to say how much they can really handle.

Slight graphic adjusters and mods that add content (quests, factions, items) could be done. I'm not expecting it but I'm crossing my fingers.

I like the whole idea of the Halo file share idea. Microsoft, knowing how they charge everything, will probably have a fee to be able to access mods. But then there is the whole texture problems too, and making sure you don't download too many mods, and fry your system, cause god knows that i don't want my brand new 360 to fry up from the game that will end my social life :tes:

It would be interested to see if this happens and where it goes. However, no matter how much I would like to play some of these mods, I'm not sure I doubt I would pay an arm and a leg for them.

I'm fine with console users getting mods. However, the only issue I see is that some mods will be incompatible with the consoles such as some mods that require direct manipulation to the ini by the user or heavy graphics mods. But for the most part, most mods will work on the console.

I dont really see this working... and if it does I see TES:VI having a severely limited construction set that will be made so all mods work for multi-platforms.

I dont like this idea much...

As a console user this is very exciting news.Whether it happens now or later,if they are thinking about it then it will happen eventually and that is awesome.
Who cares about paying for mods,id chop off one of my toes right now in order to play Skyrim.
Also im betting the negative comments are from PC users who just dont want us console users to get mods.Gotta love selfish people.

Oh great, so the construction set is going to be severely gimped so the console players can play mods that the PC community has created..

Thanks Todd.. You are really making Skyrim the best it can be :\

Soundslike a great idea if it means just allowing them to be converted and transferred rather than having Bethesda release them as official DLC.

That's not even remotely necessary because the CK can never be used on the console. Seriously you people need to stop this alarmist BS already.

They would have to make 2 Constructions set 1 for PC and a really simplified one for consoles , one where you can only use only what is in there and with a meter telling you when you added enough stuff to blow up a console , meaning no new models or textures :turtle:

my opinion of course
