Bethesda wants to bring Skyrim mods to Consoles (Thread #2)

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:28 am

Ah, yes cause the mods for Dragon Age 2 are so "EPIC", compared to real mods made through SDK's.

DA2 are an example of the "hacked mods" cause they didn't release an SDK.

Do you think you'd see the variety that Oblivion/Morrowind has or Fallout 3 in Dragon Age 2, didn't think so.

25,000 mods for Oblivion so far.

Proper modding is with a released SDK, and that has been all but killed off as of yet.

you can't kill it off if it was never there. Modding with an official mod kit released by the developer is *extremely* rare and I actually can't recall any other companies that do release an sdk.I'm sure there are others that do that I don't know about though, but the point is its rare.

First off I'd like to say I'm both a console and pc gamer and I love the idea of including console players in the modding community, always happy to have more people enjoying mods. Now to business, allowing consoles mod access would enhance their gaming experience and would allow modders to enjoy a wider base to expeirence their mods, however this would require the modders to work on mods directly for the console to ensure that the mod functioned correctly. This does not mean that mods wouldn't be produced for the pc and be out of the console's capabilities to run therefore ensuring that pc gamers and modders get their own unique mods to themselves. If implimented correctly it could be a great way to breach the gap between pc and console gamers since there is appearantly all of this hostility over who is superior. So it's a great idea but will take work to get to the point where it would work out well and no one would have their game experience lessened. AND as for the pc gamers telling others that the solution to getting mods is to "Buy the pc version" or "Buy a pc" let me just say this, not everyone comes from a home that has enough disposible income to run out and purchase a gaming computer capable of running a game like skyrim. Several people have to save up for months to get even a small laptop or a used console so to say it's as easy a buying a new pc is an insult to those people who can't afford many things for gaming because they have to deal with real life. The forums are supposed to be a place where everyone feels welcome to express their ideas so please, let's all stop alienating each other and tossing insults back and forth ok?

SO, basically, I'm a pc/console gamer and I fully support mods being available on console, and if implimented i'll be out there modding and testing for consoles the first second it's availible

Just accept that your taking the back seat, and move on,shouldn't be too hard.

Just accept that if your going to want something more advanced, your going to need a more advanced system (PC).

Idiotic statement, since it can be applied to you console players.
Accept PC has mods and move on.

I personally dislike settling for something less, which a console is.

Yes it was an idiotic statment but it was to prove a point,to which i will not explain. Though i did touch a nerve.

This would be absolutely AMAZING! I would love for my console playing comrades to enjoy the ingenuity and love put into the mods I get to play with. I think they are going in the right direction.

Those not wanting this for the simple reason of wanting to have something over the consoles are sad, sad individuals. You are essentially being those Christians during the middle ages, who refused to translate the bible into English because they wanted to be the gatekeepers of the information therein, for it gave them power over other people. Personally, I love freedom. If console players can get mods, and they can make it work, they should do it, and I would be happy as a pig in mud.

Some of the reactions coming out of this thread disgust me. Calling someone who plays on a console stupid? Saying that if they wants mods they can easily buy it for PC? Why not let the love be spread around?

Did the 60s mean nothing for us as people? :(

:shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: Mods Should Be Free

For those modders who have put such an incredible amount of time and effort to make some truly brilliant mods, I'm happy to part with some cash.

If Bethesda approves of some sort of licensing agreement to allow Skyrim mods to be bought and sold, then IMO anyone who wants to charge for their mod should be free to do so.

Likewise, you and I would be completely free to simply choose not to buy it.

They did this with TF2. They released community made items for sale, and then paid the people them made them based on the sales. Those mofos made out like bandits too. They should totally do this for amazing mods. I would love to pay a modder for his amazing work. [censored] if I found out that Qarl had a PayPal I'd drop him a fifty right now.

Will you still be as excited to drop Qarl that 50 when in Skyrim all his texture sizes are cut to a 1/4th their current size and don't include parallax mapping so they can be used on the console as well?

Hey, look, a fear monger. Why would they do this? More than likely what they would do is set specs for the console mods. Essentially if you make the mod this way, it can be on console. If you go over the specs, it can't. Bringing mods to consoles won't cut down on PC mods capabilities at all. This is some serious cognitive dissonance on how the construction kit even works.

There would be no reason to cut capabilities.

God. I don't get all this system bashing. At the end of the day we are all just people sitting in front of a screen pressing buttons.

This, x1000.
Yet there will always be PC elitist. Most console players aren't like that though. We just want a fair playing field. But you PC "bros" just can't have that.
And all this coming from an ex PC exclusive player. I just got fed up with it though, and realized the consoles have a lot to offer.

I like how you avoided answering the question. /smirk

Why would they do this? To reach more of the user base, to make their mods more popular, to get higher ratings, to cash in on the profits (assuming the idea of paying the mod makers as presented in this thread was adopted). Any number of reasons why PC specific mods would end up being rather rare.

Well if they as mod makers want to do that, that should be their decision. They are free to do it. I'm all about freedom man, I ain't gonna tell Qarl he can't cut down his textures to fit into a console version. Although mod makers like Qarl would more than likely make two versions (or not even bother with making it for console, considering Qarl is obsessed with perfection).

It's pitiful, it really is. Bethesda is one of the few game companies who care enough to release a construction kit at all, and we act like brats and want to keep it to ourselves. I can hear it now, a kid crying, "NO! DON'T GIVE IT TO THEM! THEY'LL RUIN IT!"

There is no evidence that modmakers will abandon PC mods if the console is able to have mods. Hell, most people make mods for themselves, and if they can make mods they're playing it on the PC in the first damned place. Naw dude, you just need to chill and quit being so negative. Let everyone experience the fun, don't be a miser.

You say "this x1000" but then proceed to bash PC players as being elitist, and then proceed to say that nobody on consoles is like that. How terribly hypocritical.
Also flaunting your platform of choice in every post is unnecessary and it doesn't give you the rigt to do the very thing you seem to think PC players are so guilty of.

You hide behind the "cause of freedom" while intentionally ignoring the impact it will have on the PC experience. Folks want to throw around labels like "selfish PC elitist" while ignoring the harm it will bring to a large portion of players enjoyment of the game so long as "they get theirs".

You want freedom? Every single person that ever purchased Oblivion on the 360 or PS3 had the freedom to purchase the PC version instead.

an impact on aproximately 10% vs an impact on aproximately 90%....giving mods to the latter one seems more profitable and more people can enjoy it...the 10% audience can still have their mods catered to the pc created by modders who are aiming to give the pc players a better experience while the modders who want to give the consoles a better experience do their own mods.

That's a false choice, (something governments are quite good at these days, too. You should be a politician!)

I am not ignoring it. I commented on it. I am simply saying you are WRONG about the affect it would have on PC modding. Completely wrong. Utterly wrong. Supahdupahwrong. Should I say it some more so you don't accuse me of ignoring it?

There is no evidence for one. For two, as I stated, those that mod are modding on a PC and therefore are probably playing Skyrim on a PC and therefore are more likely to make the mod so that they, themselves, can play it. TWO AND A HALF, console mods will probably have some sort of maximum specifications. Modders are wonderfully creative individuals, and the few that I know personally will not want to have to limit themselves needlessly.

To claim that modders are in for Fame and Fortune is an ignorant statement as well. Saying that allowing modders to mod for consoles will make them flock to the console because they want to get more attention is intensely under-appreciative of what modders are and ignoring the reasons they mod. I am unsure of why you think so lowly of modders to assume this.

All in all, I'll say it again. You are a fear monger. Also, next time you respond to me, please respond to the whole statement instead of cutting out a small piece you want to reply because the rest would be too difficult for you to respond too. Kthnx.

I'm not worried about the possible negative outcomes of this (like making us pay for mods), since it most likely will NOT happen.

As dubious as I find that "10%" number to be, as it is so far below the industry standard, that just means they need to cater "more' to it not less. If PC sales made up only 10% of Oblivion's total sales that means there is a gigantic untapped market out there. You don't increase sales by ignoring untapped portions of the user base.

I'd expect to see announcements about "improving the PC experience" and "all new PC features" and "better support for the PC mod'ers" etc. The fact that we are seeing the opposite of that in "making them all look the same" and "no DX11 features implemented" leads me to believe that 10% is a pretty fictional number and only an example he plucked out of thin air.

If Todd wasn't 100% sure of that number it is rather unfortunate he used it since it will be repeated ad nauseum in every debate that involves platform -vs- platform forever.

That said, if it is true that would only add to the argument that mod'ers would be even more not so lightly encouraged to create cross-platform mods, thus reducing the quality of mods overall.
