Bethesda! What are you doing? Part Deux!

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:13 pm

So there's no classes? And no attributes? And now no star signs?

I think maybe Bethesda has been drinking from the same well as ol' Petey Moleneux. In the famous words of Lando Calrissian "This deal is getting worse all the time."

Removing a class is fine as long as we have tag skills or some kind of corollary. Attributes delineated and shaped a character's base capabilities however and replicating their effect in any meaningful way will be difficult. The star sign however was a hallmark of the Elder Scrolls games. It was traditional Bethesda flavor. I don't like it. At all. To be perfectly honest, this feels like it just went from "evolution of the series" to "taking a dump on your history" with the ever-so-gentle scent of "shamelessly selling out to mediocrity"... Call me a whiner. Tell me I should wait and actually play it. Tell me just how much this sounds like "They changed it, it must be bad."

As of now I am genuinely concerned as to weather or not I even want to buy my own copy before I play it. This is not a good feeling.

What's left to be said that already hasn't been? Honestly, I feel awesome knowing that while you're debating buying a copy i'll be loving every second of it. Good day.

I feel like they're trying to abandon the traditional trappings of an RPG. Todd has said something to that effect in interviews.
I think this is a very bad decision. I want TES to be an RPG, not an action-adventure game with some elements of an RPG.

It might work out, but I'm not too hopeful.

Everything is just behind the scenes now, so you don't have to pick from a list of stats. It gives the game a mire organic feeling.

I've been on the fence for a while, since they said no spellmaking (well it was never confirmed 100%, but Todd suggested and continues to suggest it won't be around).
The attributes thing set me over the edge though. I like perks, but attributes defined a character so much. They weren't done properly in Oblivion, but if they fixed it it could have been truly special...

If nothing else, Bethesda's games serve as decent modding platforms. Frankly, I don't really care how the game turns out. It's going to be a critical and financial success, and I'll still probably enjoy it after some heavy modding as always. My only fear is that a lot of the things pertaining to the character creation system and combat system will be hard-coded and impossible to improve upon via mods.

What the hell are you on? Birthsigns were a newly introduced feature on Morrowind. And to be frank, it was too stiff and ham-fisted to my liking. Now Daggerfall's own "Character's Special Advantage and Disadvantage" feature, now that's the super good stuff that really needs to come back.

What I don't understand is why the don't listen to the fans.

"We want our levitation!"

"But levitation is next to pointless."

"But it was fun!"

They do listen. The beast races fiasco pre-Morrowind release were the most excellent example for this, among others. There's just some things that they disagree in. I don't want them to be like Bioware, to put it bluntly (to much brown-nosing for its royal mess of a "fanbase").

brown-nosing

I hate that term.
And I don't mean overdoing it, but if they want something for so long and keep asking, why not give it to them?
I mean, not everything fun has a point.

They do. Quite a few things in Oblivion were a response to fans (level-scaling being one, from complaints that the game was too easy when you hit level 20 or so). They don't do everything fans ask for though, because that's impractical. They're experienced game developers, fans generally aren't. It's easy for us to ask for spears and crossbows, but it's harder for them to find an actual reason to put them in the game. Doing it just because fans want it, and no other reason, is the definition of fan-service.

I don't serious get the problem at all yes I have played Morrowind and Oblivion, still playing this games but I surly can life without birtsigns .....

What I would love is a point system if you take disadvantages ... I am playing a German Tabletop Roleplaying game and there they introduced such system ... You take a disadvantage you gain points for it ....

that might prove worth if you ask me ...

Oh please. "They're not listening to the fans"? If they weren't listening, you'd have Oblivion 2.

I'm hoping they are going to reshape most of the system for Skyrim. I can't wait to see what it'll be like.

If birthsigns are gone is it perhaps because the player already has one - Dragonborn?

Yes there were Sunday classes where you joined to learn about attributes and their usage in birth signs.
