Bethesda vs World.

Post » Sat Feb 13, 2016 9:42 pm

Game industry just like any other industry needs to make: 1. Money 2. Entertaining games. Bethesda does it other way - they make cute, pleasant, engaging games hoping for some income. Thats how it looks from my point of view. I am seriously losing hope in humanity when I read comments how lunchboxes are not good enough, how iphone 4 sizzles after minute of play and bugs arent being fixed the same day they've been reported. Most, need to stress this word - MOST games nowdays will terrorize you for money from the very first day making it impossible to enjoy them and leaving you feeling like moneybag. Can we please appreciate this extraordinary and noble approach from Bethesda and stop whining about everything? My vault is almost 3 weeks old and I feel I beat the game so now im justing hoping for expansion with new challanges. Keep up good work Bethesda. <3

My point on this is some of the things you said were correct. My question to you is why is this called bethesda vs world?

My guess is that most industries like the folks who make the Diablo games, who are insanely greedy, to the point than many of us have written such corporations off the list of who's games to buy.

Because rest of the world consists mainly lousy "freemium" games which people play and spend money on. If people accept crappy games they will get more crappy games - simple. Behesda is respecting their players and thats a rare thing to see in industry. It's a money making company that doesnt try to squeeze all money possible from their products. It looks almost anarchistic to me.

I doubt it ... Let's assume that FO4 has relative low purchases at 1,000,000 units the first month ... at $45 a unit that would be around $45 million

Now let's assume that FO4 is good and sells on par with Skyrim (which sold over 10,000,000 units) ... 10 million units at $45 would be $450 million

Even if it doesn't do as well as Skyrim, Fallout 3 sold somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000,000 units so that is still in the hundreds of millions of dollars

If we assume that Bethesda is willing to keep expanding FS to keep people playing and buying lunchboxes (or they add a new purchasable element like crafting supplies or something) they might break into the 20 million or 30 million ranges (at best and with an extreme effort)

TLDR: the app will not make anywhere near what the console/PC Fallout 4 will make (but it is still a good game and worth supporting) :D

All true, but games like fallout 4 and skyrim take years, and huge teams to develop.

As long as they are still profitable then it doesn't necessarily matter. Although Bethesda doesn't do all of these things, there are advantages to a PC/Console game:

- You can license the graphics engine and make money from other games (this is a technique used effectively by Id, which is now part of the Bethesda family)

- PC/Console (piracy considerations aside) generally only purchase titles so you are guaranteed upfront returns with little effort other than bug fixing and paid expansions ... not all mobile users are as easily enticed into putting money into mobile games (the upcoming Android release will be a good test of that as Android users tend to be much more frugal about in-app purchases)

- depth and power (if you want to make a big game, that is still difficult to do in mobility space

- You can use collector's editions and merchandise more effectively for user paid advertising and advance sales (few mobile games have worked out the whole marketing and merchandising aspect beyond Angry Birds and a few others)

Also, as I mentioned it is now possible to use the mobile launch of a compatible title to reduce your advertising costs (FS is like free advertising since it can probably make back its cost and more and still builds interest in the upcoming bigger FO4 title). I like that Bethesda has branched into mobile space and hope to see more expansions of this title and more titles in the future. However, I would hope that they create collaborative cooperative titles rather than replacing their PC/Console business with the much more volatile mobile business.

Fallout also has a lot of advantages with the bigger PC/Console title that help them reduce the advertising needs:

- You have a licensable property that could be adapted in other media (only Angry Birds has really done this in the mobile space) ... with Fallout you have the excellent Nuka Cola Youtube series ... the fantastically detailed Fallout history series (Fallout Storyteller) ... these are currently fan projects but Bethesda could license or create a TV show for Amazon/Netflix (now that they are wanting original content) ... if Grumpy Cat can have a comic book (launching in the fall) I would think that Fallout could do an excellent comic series ... Fallout would make an excellent book (Metro 2033 or Bioshock style) and with enough media presence would make an excellent feature film

These are all things that a fully fleshed out multiple platform title gives Bethesda and things that are significantly more difficult to do the mobile space alone
