As long as they are still profitable then it doesn't necessarily matter. Although Bethesda doesn't do all of these things, there are advantages to a PC/Console game:
- You can license the graphics engine and make money from other games (this is a technique used effectively by Id, which is now part of the Bethesda family)
- PC/Console (piracy considerations aside) generally only purchase titles so you are guaranteed upfront returns with little effort other than bug fixing and paid expansions ... not all mobile users are as easily enticed into putting money into mobile games (the upcoming Android release will be a good test of that as Android users tend to be much more frugal about in-app purchases)
- depth and power (if you want to make a big game, that is still difficult to do in mobility space
- You can use collector's editions and merchandise more effectively for user paid advertising and advance sales (few mobile games have worked out the whole marketing and merchandising aspect beyond Angry Birds and a few others)
Also, as I mentioned it is now possible to use the mobile launch of a compatible title to reduce your advertising costs (FS is like free advertising since it can probably make back its cost and more and still builds interest in the upcoming bigger FO4 title). I like that Bethesda has branched into mobile space and hope to see more expansions of this title and more titles in the future. However, I would hope that they create collaborative cooperative titles rather than replacing their PC/Console business with the much more volatile mobile business.
Fallout also has a lot of advantages with the bigger PC/Console title that help them reduce the advertising needs:
- You have a licensable property that could be adapted in other media (only Angry Birds has really done this in the mobile space) ... with Fallout you have the excellent Nuka Cola Youtube series ... the fantastically detailed Fallout history series (Fallout Storyteller) ... these are currently fan projects but Bethesda could license or create a TV show for Amazon/Netflix (now that they are wanting original content) ... if Grumpy Cat can have a comic book (launching in the fall) I would think that Fallout could do an excellent comic series ... Fallout would make an excellent book (Metro 2033 or Bioshock style) and with enough media presence would make an excellent feature film
These are all things that a fully fleshed out multiple platform title gives Bethesda and things that are significantly more difficult to do the mobile space alone
