[Relz] A Better Benirus Manor

6002 Now :)

I'm experiencing a minor oddity, though. Nothing that makes it unplayable, it just looks odd. Two portions of the exterior garden wall seem to be missing, and they seem to match where the broken-down bits of wall would normally be (and which I notice has been repaired in your screenshots). Here is what I'm seeing:

Yay, glad you like it!

Thank you for pointing this out. Better Cities makes a lot of edits in the same spots. I don't use it (comp just can't handle it, quite regrettably), but some folks have said that it only presents minor conflicts. This could be one of them. Try using the "Interior Only" version, if you want - I made it with BC users in mind. Alternately, you could try loading my esp after Better Cities' esps, and see if that works better. Of course, it could create other similar conflicts, but maybe they will be conflicts preferable to this one in particular. ;)

And do let me know how it goes! The more particulars you can give me, the better I chances I have to make things compatible.

SCIENCE! has been perpetrated. I no longer have any idea what is going on here.

1. Tried using the interior-only variant. This resulted in one section of the wall being filled in correctly, but the section nearest the front door remained missing.
2. Tried moving the BBM esps after Better Cities - no noticable effect. Began to have dark suspicions that perhaps it is problem with Better Cities, not BBM.
3. Tried disabling Better Cities, keeping BBM. Section nearest the front door restored, whole segment of wall nearest the colonade where the prophet preaches disappears.
4. Tried disabling BBM too, including Helping Hands (poor Rosalind ...). Same effect (lots of missing wall). ... er?
5. Disabled everything I could think of (Better Cities, BBM, Anvil Morning Glory), having gone to an interior location and made a clean save. Still loads of missing wall. Whut?
6. Decided to give up, because I'm hungry, my youngest is making destructive noises and my eldest needs reminding that he promised to make pizza this evening.

So. I'd love to be helpful, but I fear I have no useful content to report to you. Or to the Better Cities group.

Sorry :(

Okay, I was able to somewhat reproduce the error. Using the main breaker switch in the basemant fixed it just fine for me. I assume since you posted you already tried that, but just in case, have you given it a go yet?

Missing bits of wall are an indication the mod could use some kind of reset script to use before uninstalling it. Otherwise this is one of the hazards you run into with things that disable bits of vanilla content.

Yep, already on it. I never considered it before I made BDBS - now everything new I learned, I have go back and write into all the other mods. It's a never-ending process, it seems.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. However, trying it seems to have no effect for me :(

Okay. I'm working on a fix, will be out in the next day or three. The fix is to prevent that from happening again, and also (as Arthmoor pointed out) to make uninstalling the mod cleaner, since the issues share the same root cause.

Unrelated announcement: Xvoh has very kindly made a french translation of BBM available http://www.confrerie-des-traducteurs.fr/site/mods/cyrodiil/habitations/manoir_benirus_ameliore.php. Thanks, Xvoh! :goodjob:

I'm stoked to have this mod. This mod is the reason why my character just purchased his first home! But after I purchased the home (and began the quest) I recently downloaded and installed Better Cities. Will this play nice with Better Cities? If so, how about load order? Thanks! -- BZ

I play with Better Cities and this mod, and they work perfectly. That, or if you are really worried, just use the "Interior Only" option.

I've asked this question elsewhere but haven't got an answer yet. If I have already lived in the manor for some time now, accumulated LOTS of stash, will the stuff still be around with the mod install? I don't want to lose everything after installing this mod. LOL.

Good to hear. I just don't know what to expect (I've never owned Benirus, even with Vanilla). So I don't know if it looks like what it's supposed to look like. I haven't completed the quest yet, either, so I don't know what will happen. But since you have no problems, that's good news. Do you use interior only, or the full thing? Do you load it before or after BC (BOSS doesn't recognize this mod yet)? Thanks -- BZ

I would recommend you load it after BC if you are going to use the Complete version - if you use Interior Only, it shouldn't matter. Note the poster above who was using BBM with BC and had trouble with the fence line - I'm still working on a fix for that, just been strapped for time. So I would recommend using the Interior Only version with BC until I get that fixed. There is a good chance the Complete version would work just fine too, but give the exterior a good look and make sure everything is "right" before you save your game.

If you use OC or OBC, load BBM before those, otherwise you'll lose some of the Open Cities magic. Sorry for the delayed response. Have fun. :)

Updated to v4.4.

I re-did the fencing so that nobody should ever have missing fence pieces, either while using Better Cities or after uninstalling BBM. Thank you very much, Winterlove, for pointing out the conflict. When you update to the new version, it will fix your fence. :)

Happy to be of service :)

Edit: OK, it will take a little while to test things. Last week I decided to start a new game with my existing character and she hasn't had time yet to accumulate enough money to buy Benirus manner. I though I'd kept a save of my old game, but it doesn't look like it. I will let you know if I notice anything amiss.

I didn't even see the 4.4 update. I'm such a slacker.

Thanks for the update, Khett!

Updated to 4.5!

Fixed a plant in the front yard that wasn't changing from its "haunted" version.
Re-organized the ingredient storage slightly.
Edited the ingredient storage script to prevent "remove item" message spam.
Added additional optional bright lighting to the basemant.
Re-parented a few objects to further guarantee the house would appear as intended if installed after completing the quest.
Created an optional landscape patch for Open Cities users.

Please make a clean save before updating.

Enjoy! :)

Hmm... brighter basemant lighting. I might have to update, although really the mod is a delight as is, and I haven't quite made up my mind whether I want the library to display. There's really an art to knowing when to stop (or make features optional) in a housing mod. Nice work! :)

One of the reasons I like this mod is that it makes the basemant so very cosy-looking. I want that place in real-life :)

Khettienna: Bit of a late report, for which my apologies. 4.4 seemed to fix many of the missing wall problems I was experiencing. However, the section of wall nearest the front door is still broken-down (rather than missing bits of mesh as I reported earlier) even after resetting. Also, I've noticed that as of 4.5 a different section of wall now appears to be "doubled up", as if two copies of the same segment were in almost the same place. I'll try and get screenshots for you later.

Also, I shall take this opportunity to thank you for your Better Rosethorn Hall :)

Right, a couple of screens of the wall segment:

http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww184/winterlove_photos/ScreenShot20.jpg
http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww184/winterlove_photos/ScreenShot21.jpg

Hopefully the FormIDs of the bits of wall are clear in those screenshots. For reference, 2D is Better Benirus Manor for Cobl - Complete.esp in my load order, and 6E is Better Cities Full.esp.

Here's another shot from around the other side of the wall:

http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww184/winterlove_photos/ScreenShot18.jpg

So, it looks like a fairly minor incompatability with Better Cities.

@ Lady Evenstar: Thank you! I really wanted the books there for me personally so I could just sit and read them (and they look beautiful with Book Jackets). On the other hand, book placement mods and such have made it easier than ever for characters to neatly assemble their own collections, which is also fun - and not every player will want every character to be given so much "freebie" (me included!). Anyway, it feels good to know someone recognizes why the options are there. Makes it all so much more worth doing. :)

@ Winterlove: Hrmmm. That's boggling. I didn't change the fence at all between 4.4 and 4.5. No matter, I will fix it. Thank you very, very much for the screens with formIDs, as that will make it much easier to pin down! It's nice to have someone who can run Better Cities giving me a hand with making sure it's all "just right" (or as close as it can be).

Well, it turns out that with this new-old video card, I can run Better Cities (hooray!). Unfortunately, making my exterior really fluid (including the fence) with Better Cities is going to require a proper patch. I've never modded with Better Cities before, so this may take a little time (in other words, no ETA). I myself am switching to the Interior Only version in the meantime, which eliminates the issue entirely.

Anyone willing to make a proper patch is, of course, welcome to do so. :)

Edit:
@ Winterlove, and anyone else who still has trouble with BBM Complete + Better Cities fencing:

Here are the RefIDs for the three culprit fence pieces:

00095265
000BA16D
00095264

If you deactivate either BBM Complete or Better Cities, or both, after having run both at the same time, those are the missing three. The first is the one closest the front door, the second is the one near the front-right corner (looking at the house from the front), and the third is the one near the back-left of the house. Re-enable these in the console, the re-activate Better Cities + BBM Interior Only.

Edit 2:
Just for kicks, I loaded up Better Cities with no other mods and made a brand new character. Seems like completing the manor quest before installing Better Cities results in missing fence pieces one way or another, despite all precautions taken. In fact, loading up Better Cities before the quest was completed but the character had already seen the house exterior also resulted in missing fence pieces. They change the layout and object parenting of many of the pieces, probably why. IMO they need a main breaker switch. :D
