Better Bodies Dagoth Ur?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:06 am

Pretty nice! Personally I'd just make the lips a bit thinner, but other than that it's pretty cool

Dagoth Ur's mask is a funerary one from ancient Egypt?

Well, I'm trying to make it look as much like Dagoth Ur's original mask as possible, and the Pharaoh masks are the closest thing to a photorealistic Dagoth Ur mask I'm going to find, so I'm using them.

EDIT: To be honest, I think I'm going to finish the rest of the mask by just brushing the details out with photoshop and then layering on some metal scratches to make it look real, if I do it right, it'll look the the face I stuck onto it.

Not bad, it looks a bit like African tribal mask but I like it :icecream:

That's because the eyebrows are from an African tribal mask. :P I don't really like the eyebrows though, I'll probably change/get rid of them.

I really really like the eyebrows. I vote leave 'em.

@Everyone else-- For various reasons, my Dagoth Ur isn't something that I'm entirely comfortable sharing publicly. If you're interested, feel free to shoot me a PM :)

The mask looks good, starwarsguy... but for me, all the straight lines and the abstractness of the original were typical for the design. I think most texture replacers so far tried to use some golden masks as a base which always looked too human. It made them less terrifying.

Oh, a note about the replacer I posted earlier-- the chains got removed from the the design quite a while back and I no longer have the source file for them, so those won't be included with it. But, hopefully the rest of the mesh edits I made are cool enough that you can all forgive me for that :P

Oh I think we can find it in our hearts to forgive you. I liked the image so much I made it my desktop wallpaper. :)

I, too, am interested in SWG's masterwork on this issue.

I just wonder why no-one mentioned Darknut's fantastic retextures of all the ash creatures, including Dagoth Ur, to the original poster.

EDIT: OK, OP wanted Better Bodies versions, not just retexes. But they are "creatures" not people...

Yes but Dagoth Ur was constructed on the human body base.

That's not too hard to do. Anotehr thing that might be done is perhaps enchance the model in blender or something.

Tho I don't see why would it not use it's animations, Winged Tilight has also been enchanced by BB IIRC and she's using her normal stock animations.

I have not seen that would you care to share a link?

Yes but Dagoth Ur was constructed on the human body base.

No, he wasn't.

This is indicated by the bizarre stretching that occurs when you paste human parts onto Dagoth Ur. He may be humanoid-looking, but he's got different bones: the same problem happens with Hircine, Ash Vampires, and Almalexia (yes, really - my BB Almalexia has had her neck and shoulders redone in Blender, and Westly's hides the defects with clothing). Comparing Dagoth Ur's original model and Vivec's original model to the original human models shows how striking the difference is: Vivec's body is literally made of re-textured player/NPC parts, while Dagoth Ur's shape is more similar in its construction to Better Bodies in that it is all one piece. Since the skeletons don't match, applying the Better Bodies models to Dagoth Ur's skeleton results in huge amounts of distortion. The same distortion would happen in the opposite direction if you tried to apply Dagoth Ur's animations to the player without editing them heavily.

Because of that, making a Better Bodies Dagoth Ur is a much bigger job than any of us character/texture modders initially thought. It's not impossible and I have ideas, but it is still a big job and I haven't gotten around to it yet.

--important info--

This is exactly why it's taken me to get far at all, as soon as you edit Dagoth Ur's mesh, even do something like multires the faces in edit mode, weird distortions appear. You have to selectively apply edits to certain parts of the body to make it work.

It also took myself a while because it was the first time I worked with body textures, and I had trouble finding highres source pics, a lot of the time I have to revert to searching for, you know, stuff that I can't mention here... :P

As for my texture though, the mask is pretty much done, as seen it these shots:

http://i55.tinypic.com/rks9z9.jpg
http://i53.tinypic.com/30ro03m.jpg

As you can see, I've had fun painting on the details with my tablet, it's crazy how useful that thing is, but the texture appears to be reversed on the actual mesh, probably due to lazy UVmapping, shouldn't be too hard to fix though.

a little offtopic, but some people here seem to know exactly about what i asked http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1171539-making-better-bodies-creatures/.
basically, i wonder how to attach armor to a better bodies creature?

at topic: curious that the winged twilight uses better bodies now (westly's version) whereas dagoth ur seems to be a problem. why is that?

Wow, is http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g235/Wesadam/Creatures/WAR_DGTHR_SCREEN5.jpg how bad Dagoth Ur's feet really look? He definitely needs a total body overhaul.

That's Westly's BB version-- the texture seams are inherent in the BB mesh.

Honestly, you might be better off making an entirely new mesh and animation that resembles the original as much as possible. Those weird distortions that happen on the textures are just as visible on the original from what I remember, it's just not as much of an eyesore because the texture is so low res. But his entire body seems to stretch and distort as his animations play out. It's almost kind of cool because it makes him look like he's rippling with power, but not so much for trying to replace. So however he is set up, the stretching will likely be a problem no matter what. Best to start from scratch most likely. Maybe consult with Dirnae for the animation once the bones are in place?

Yeah, that's what I think needs to be done. Some very good modeler needs to make an entirely new Dagoth Ur from scratch, as the original model is just horrendous!
