Better bow and arrow controls

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:11 am

I imagine with a mouse and keyboard, this isnt a big problem. So really this is a console only issue. Well you see, on consoles the bow and arrow controls was pretty clunky, and when you zoomed in it was even worse, you were unable to make minor movements, if you moved the stick too far it would make a small "jump" in that direction.

Also, since this is a console controller, a bit of aim assist is necessary for aiming, though it should be unnoticeable.

For melee combat, i dont think any aim assist is necessary.

Was console Oblivion bows similar to Fallout 3 guns? Because I thought Fallout 3 did a decent job of it(for not being an actual FPS). Where zooming made your aim speed slow down and you moved slowly as well, but if you didnt zoom in you really had less accuracy.

I think they made mention that the off button would give you zoom.
On the mouse this is normally the right.. so on a controller the top left button ?

Auto tracking appears to be in, look at the game trailer as the character draws the bow and moves to aim.
The bow moves too smoothly to be player based alone imo.

I think alot has and is going to be made right with bows tbh.

Also said is a knockback attack for bows in melee.. should be fun in high places.

Edit: while this is about bows, did anyone else get the hair trigger with them in oblivion?
Where you'd draw and the arrow would just splash out a few feet, then draw and flop again and again.

I've never really been much of a fan of aim assist in any type of game. I like feeling as though there is some skill or finesse involved. However, I totally agree as far as the jumpy aiming controls go...I'm hoping for smoother aiming.

Most console FPS have aim assist, actually pretty much all of them do. Its a matter of hiding it really.

Its necessary, or else it would be frustrating to play FPS with a controller.

Yeah that was another problem. If you pulled the trigger a bit too fast between animations or something, the next arrow would automatically flop.

I think a solution to this would be if you hold the trigger, but release it early(between animation), the whole thing should just cancel, instead of the animation going through the flopping the arrow to the ground.

Yeah it was an annoying problem, as you say it was solved with just reseting the animation some way.
However due to the often random nature in combat it was an issue I hope they've looked into.
As NV's problems with certain weapons is a sign that the last engine had issues on this or similar features imo.

I forgot about that! How irritating... And speaking of canceling the shot, we should definitely have the ability to do that whenever we'd like. If I draw my next shot, and the target ends up dying from my last one, why should I have to look at the ground and slam an arrow into the dirt? I always found that annoying.

I never had a problem with aiming my bow in oblivion, but i didn't like having to shoot my arrow on the ground to recover it. Why not simply just add a cancel button such as when you Hold the LT(360 obviously) simply tap A or some other button to cancel.

I think you should be able to, with a high enough marksman skill, lock on to enemies in 3rd person, like The Legend of Zelda games. There would be no lock on in 1st person of course.

I want a system that allows you to hit a moving target by giving you a point to aim for ahead of the target. It would be absolutely perfect for a perk. In oblivion the easiest way to hit a target was to wait until it stopped or wait until it lined up to you. It took me out of the archer experience and didnt make my character feel very skilled. Imagine picking off a fleeing enemy or taking a dragon out of the sky by placing an arrow right through its eye using the lead perk and slow motion dragon shout.

In oblivion if your acrobatics is above 50 you can do the roll move which cancels the shot I play on PS3 so correct me if I'm wrong for 360

takes the skill out of the game, if they implement it i hope you can turn it off as id never use it

on pc the roll makes you automatically shoot the arrow

it would be a great addition to be able to cancel the shot

i agree, that's the reason that i avoid using a bow in oblivion, i mean they have to realized that a controller is not part of our body so they cant make something to hard to do because it feels unnatural and we're going to avoid using it.

I agree. It was impossible to do tiny movements because the bow wouldn't move right up until you hit a certain point on the thumbstick.
