Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary v3.02

DESCRIPTION
===================================================
Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary (BDBS) is an encompassing collection of improvements to your Dark Brotherhood experience. Here's a complete list (I think):

When you first join, you will notice:

  • The existing sanctuary is now all one, unified cell, without load doors. Credits to TiberiusLazarus (Dark Brotherhood One Room).
  • Custom textures make the sanctuary more elegant, while maintaining the basic architecture and layout of the existing sanctuary.
  • Decor and clutter improvements throughout.
  • The default DB armor is now actually black for both genders (optional).
  • The default DB hood is now shaped like a mage's hood, but with the leather DB texture. Credits to Sonico717 (Dark Brotherhood Hood Replacer) (optional).
  • You have your own bed and safe storage chest in the dorm.
  • There is a porter named Harry on duty from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Telaendril, the elf, will now actually patrol outside the Abandoned House's entrance as her letter to Ocheeva states.
  • Vicente's chamber doors are now labeled in the same fashion as Ocheeva's.
  • There is a labeled, respawning dresser in the dorm containing extra DB armors and hoods. Ideal for companions.
  • Schemer got a DB-style makeover.
  • All NPC's AI packages were adjusted to accomodate the new sanctuary.

If you're a Cobl user, you'll also find The Luggage at the foot of your bed, as well as a Cobl sorter. There's also a dinner plate & water source in the dining area of the dorm.

When you complete the quest chain, you will notice:

Spoiler
  • You have your own quarters with safe storage at the end of the officer's hall, with an escape hatch that will deposit you neatly outside city walls. The first time you use your escape hatch, or if you discover it from outside, you'll get a map marker for fast-travel.
  • In a display case in your quarters, you'll find a special set of Sanguine Shrouded Gear, and two matching enchanted blades. The gear has the same stats as the original shrouded gear, but the values are the same as the Black Hand Robes.
  • Also in your quarters is a Black Altar. Functions as an Altar of the Nine, but in a more unchurchly way, and with no fame requirements.
  • Some seating has been made persistent and path grids have been added to your quarters, because now that it's a separate cell, it should be safe for most companions.
  • Mage altar functionality has been added to the Listener's Chamber; though for the sake of game balance, it will not be functional unless the player has completed the requisite Mages Guild quests.
  • An alchemy lab has been added to the Listener's Chamber. The Cobl version of BDBS makes it usable via Cobl static apparati.
  • A Greater Power is available to the Listener to assist with dark duties. The spell tome can be found near the Black Altar.
  • Personalized NPC chests are de-personalized to make room for new recruits.
  • Ocheeva's quarters are renamed for Arquen, and Vicente's quarters are simply guest chambers. Ideal for underlings looking to sneak a nap, or for visiting officials.
  • Vicente's slab is replaced with an actual bed, and his desk replaced with a generic one. Also, murderers will be less likely to sleep there.
  • Arquen will now actually eat and sleep in her quarters.
  • In case you've lost any of your DB-related keys, there's a small respawning bag near the well exit containing one of each.

The next time you enter the sanctuary after completing the quest chain, you will notice:

Spoiler
  • Three additional NPCs, much like the existing ones, but they don't have companion mode.
  • One of them has a small stock of magical supplies and will recharge your weapons and teach you DB spells.
  • Between the two new vendors, everything unique to the original DB vendor is covered.
  • All 6 murderers have basic AI packages to mimic the activity of the sanctuary pre-Purification.
  • All the murderers are essential, are the player's level, have levelled weapons, and have names.
  • Your safe chest will have been moved by one of your lackeys to your new quarters.
  • If you have Cobl, your lackeys will also move your Alchemical Supplies and Luggage for you.
  • All 3 of the original murderers are now significantly more attractive - no more scary goth girl. (requires NPC Face Unlocker to take effect)

What this mod doesn't do:

This mod will not dramatically change the layout or stock feel of the sanctuary. It's a thousand times better, but it will still feel familiar and work how you expect it to. There are other mods that completely overhaul the sanctuary in terms of style and architecture, and they do a fine job.

This mod also does not alter the Abandoned House. There are lots of mods out there that do this already, and I prefer modularity. If you are looking for one, check out my Better Abandoned House http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25319

This mod does not include any new sanctuaries. If you are looking for new sanctuaries to use in tandem with BDBS, check out Arthmoor's A Brotherhood Renewed (which is 100% compatible with this mod), found http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31773.

Support for other mods is included in the main download, including:

  • A Cobl version of Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary
  • A patch plugin for WillieSea's Assassin Tripwires
  • A patch plugin for See You Sleep, for the new custom beds
  • A replacement plugin for aralina81's Dark Brotherhood Chapel Memorial
  • A patch plugin for Whispered Warning (or any similar mod)
  • Replacement armor meshes for Robert's Male, Exnem's EC Body, HGEC E-Cup and C-Cup, HGEC EBE, TGND, and UFF
  • Replacement hood meshes for use with madmole's Shadowy Hoods

All meshes have been pyffi'd for best performance, and all plugins have been cleaned with TES4Edit for best compatibility.

NEW THIS VERSION (3.02)
===================================================
3.02
  • Fixed a mismatched table & bench.
  • Added support for Whispered Warning (or any similar mod).
  • Fixed the bug that sometimes caused some folks using the Chapel Memorial patch to have a bit of missing floor.

3.01
  • Adjusted some dialogue conditions for better compatibility with other DB-related mods.

3.0
  • The non-Cobl OBSE version has been removed to prevent installation confusion. If you want automated ingredient storage, please use the Cobl version.
  • The Assassin Tripwires replacement plugins have been removed, and replaced with a patch instead, to prevent installation confusion.
  • Replacement armor meshes have been provided to support a large handful of popular body replacers.
  • A replacement plugin has been included for aralina81's Dark Brotherhood Chapel Memorial.
  • Lighting and textures have been improved throughout.
  • Switches have been added in some places to control lighting for performance or aesthetics.
  • Corrected some off-center hanging lights and seaming in the tileset in the dorm area.
  • The Listener's Chamber has been remodeled and expanded, and for the sake of performance and privacy, made its own cell.
  • Item icons were given mipmaps to display correctly at all resolutions.
  • You can now tell Arquen what to do with her torch.
  • Per request, a preview image of the hood types has been included.
  • Installation is now manual, with all base meshes & textures packed in a .bsa file.

REQUIREMENTS
===================================================
  • Requires the latest official Oblivion patch (1.2.0.416).
  • Requires Cobl if you want the Cobl features.
  • Requires WillieSea's Assassin Tripwires mod, if you use the patch provided for it.
  • Requires See You Sleep if you want to see yourself sleep in the bed.
  • Requires NPC Face Color Unlocker, or a similar mod, if you want to be rid of scary goth girl.

INSTALLATION
===================================================
Spoiler
IF YOU ARE UPDATING FROM AN OLD VERSION, YOU MUST MAKE A CLEAN SAVE.
That means fully uninstall the old version first, then launch the game again and make a new save. Then install this version.
Before you uninstall the old version, make sure that if you've completed the DB quest chain, you've activated the lever marked "Decommission Sanctuary" near the well exit.
(Make sure you do that before uninstalling this version, too - not that you'll ever want to!)

Regardless of what version you had before, please make a clean save from the Chapel Memorial patch if you were experiencing any trouble with it.

Whether you are updating or installing new, move your character out of the sanctuary before installing this mod.

Extract the archive you downloaded to a temporary location.

1. From the first folder:
If you do not have Cobl, move or copy "Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.esp" from the "I do not have Cobl" subfolder to your ..Oblivion\Data folder.
If you have Cobl, move or copy "Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.esp" from the "I have Cobl" subfolder to your ..Oblivion\Data folder.

2. From the second folder, move or copy "Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.bsa" to your ..Oblivion\Data folder.

3. From the third folder, copy optional files only as needed. All options have their own Readme files containing instructions for use. Read them!

4. Place a checkmark in the box next to "Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.esp" and any of the optional plugins you've chosen in the launcher of your choice.

5. Play!

COMPATIBILITY, BUGS & TROUBLESHOOTING
===================================================
Spoiler
There are no known bugs at this time.

Load this mod BEFORE Better Abandoned House, if you have it. Also load all BDBS-related plugins AFTER Whispered Warning and similar mods. Otherwise, I think it should not matter where you place this in your load order.

Schemer & Fred do not like companions, despite my attempts to remedy this. Sometimes while testing, I would come back to the sanctuary to find them engaged in combat with any number of companions; however, they didn't seem to pick fights while I was still present. This is true without BDBS installed, and is not the fault of this mod.

Because this mod unites several cells into one, you will experience a performance loss. I have done what I can do limit this. If your FPS is intolerable, it could be that this mod is not for you unless you upgrade your hardware, turn off some other mods, or turn down your video settings.

Lighting in and near the Listener's Chamber might be particularly rough on lower end systems, so I provided some light switches that allow you to turn portions of the lighting on or off as it suits you.

For those using Whispered Warning (or a similar mod), you will have double the amount of NPCs in the sanctuary at the end of the quest chain. This can result in a heavy performance loss. The Whispered Warning patch included adds new accomodations for these people, but that will also contribute to greater resource load. If you don't have the hardware to handle this, consider skipping Whispered Warning & similar mods, or cut down on mesh and texture replacers, or don't use BDBS. I've minimalized system resource use as best I can already.

When you complete the quest chain, depending on your hardware/game configuration and how many of the included patches you have running, it may take a few minutes for the Sanctuary to fully switch over. Your computer has a lot of things to do during these moments, so please be patient with it. Also, remember that some changes don't take effect until you leave and re-enter the sanctuary. Ownership of containers, the appearance of new doors, etc... they will all happen. You'll see a message on your screen letting you know when it's all finished. This process will be much, much faster if you leave the sanctuary directly after talking to Arquen that first time. In my testing, that cut it down from about 3 minutes to about 30 seconds.

This mod is completely incompatible with other sanctuary overhauls. This mod may be compatible with other mods that make only small changes, such as placing a container or a few items, you will just have to try and see. If you need a patch to make this mod work with another mod that only makes small changes, please send me a PM or comment at this mod's download page at TESNexus, and I'll do my best about it. Chapel Memorial and Assassin Tripwires are both incompatible, but replacement plugins/patches have been provided to make them work together.

Installation troubles?
Please, unless you are sure you have encountered a new problem, and you have exhausted all other probable means of solving it, do not ask me for help installing this mod. Everything I can say has already been said in the Readme files. I even wrote a general troubleshooting guide, and linked it at the beginning of this Readme. If you don't value my time enough to use the documentation I've provided, then you may not use this mod.

If you encounter any bugs or compatibility issues, I would like to hear about them so I can fix them.

Better Abandoned House v1.22

To leave the house obviously abandoned and in shambles invites investigation or vandalism. This simple immersion mod changes the Cheydinhal Abandoned House to Alamo's house. No one can remember the last time they saw him; yet his house remains well-kept, his fireplace lit, and his taxes paid. You may find a few more ambiguous clues about his identity if you become involved with the Dark Brotherhood.

There are a lot of mods that renovate the abandoned house in Cheydinhal into something quite livable, but I wanted a subtle story to show how the sanctuary remains undetected. If a house is not abandoned, it has a resident; and then there must be a reason that the resident is either unaware of or understanding of having a Dark Brotherhood sanctuary is his or her basemant.

This is not meant to be a player house. I knew some of you would try to live in it anyway, so I made the containers non-respawning; however, it is as bland and unmemorable as possible, so as not to rouse suspicion.

Objects have been added to and moved in the house, the basemant, and the immediate exterior. One load screen had its text changed so that it no longer mentions the Abandoned House, but rather refers to Alamo. The Abandoned House Key has been renamed to Alamo's House Key.

Since the house is owned, you can no longer just waltz in without consequence. Those who are welcome in the sanctuary below may stay and go as they please, however.

This mod was designed to compliment my Better Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary mod; however, the two are completely modular and can be used separately.

All meshes have been pyffi'd for best performance, and all plugins have been cleaned with TES4Edit for best compatibility.

Very nice. So, just to make sure, I can play this without COBL or OBSE without any ill effects? I don't mind losing the bonuses they add.

@ Cogstar: As far as I know, you can put it anywhere in your load order, assuming you have no other mods that drastically alter the sanctuary or its residents. If you have an .esp-based mod that changes the DB armor to something you particularly like, you want to load that after mine.

@ Sulteric: Yes, there are two .esp files, one for Cobl and named as such. As for OBSE - see next post. Oh, and Sulteric, Viconia gets along fine with the sanctuary dwellers. She once attacked Fred and Schemer while I was out, so I added them to the player faction in my mod, and that seems to generally prevent companions from going postal on them.

Since I had to fix the upload anyway, I also added in non-OBSE versions of the .esp. So whether you have Cobl and/or OBSE or not, there's a version for you in there.

Seems to freeze up randomly after several minutes in the sanctuary, or at least it does for me.

Otherwise it's amazing, I love the changes.

@ The-Nord: I don't know what would cause that. But if you notice any particular pattern to it, let me know. :(

@ johnson: I'm glad you like it! And yeah, the goal was to make it some place there was a point to being other than just to pick up/drop off quests. You can actually live there now, particularly once you've completed the quests!

@ Cogstar: Well, then put BDBS early in your load order so those changes will overwrite mine (assuming that is your preference), and everything should be okay. I haven't tried OOO with it, so I don't know what particular changes it makes to the sanctuary. Let me know how it turns out!

@ Madmole: Some, of course, because there are many more objects for the camera to render. I have a middle-of-the-road machine, and I haven't noticed any substantial drop in framerate. I also made sure my custom textures were reasonably small, and went easy on the clutter. So you'll just have to try it and find out! ;)

Seems to be a bit of an oops. The non-COBL ESP still has COBL listed as a master in the 2.1 version. This was not the case in the 2.0 beta release.

Yeah, I fixed that a couple hours ago and re-uploaded. So sorry about that.

This is why it's a bad idea to mod while tired.

The default DB hood is now shaped like a mage's hood, but with the leather DB texture. Credits to Sonico717 (Dark Brotherhood Hood Replacer).

Everything looks nice, but I don't like that the default DB hood has been changed, I don't like the way how mage's hoods look.

yeah, I'm kinda wary of this 'cause I use http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12870. I usually try to keep other hoods out of my game 'cause these look so much more natural it's kinda hard to not have them. Everything else about this looks amazing, though, and I'll definitely try it out.

Providing replacement meshes for default or Shadowy Hoods falls in the "can do" category. Also, Shadowy Hoods looks really cool, so now I want it. Unless things turn unexpectedly complicated, you should find these contained in the download in the next day or three. Will post here when I update. :D

Just wish to say that this mod is being very good to me so far. No buggy weirdness, just Khettienna-fied tasteful goodness. ^_^

Off to play!

edit: where are my manners? Thank you, of course!

@ Cogstar: Well, then put BDBS early in your load order so those changes will overwrite mine (assuming that is your preference), and everything should be okay. I haven't tried OOO with it, so I don't know what particular changes it makes to the sanctuary. Let me know how it turns out!
