A better descriptor for the term "PERK"

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:53 am

Health, stamina, and magica are by no means original names. If we changed them to HP, fatiuge, and mana...it would by no means change what they do. A name is just a name, its not that big of deal if you ask me. Its not like there never was a game before Fallout to use perks ever in the history of forever. Its just that game is fresh in a lot of peoples minds, and they have this strange fear that radiation is going to start leaking from the holes ripped in the sky which we call stars and make Tamriel mutate into Fallout.

The name doesn't matter, its the task they complete. And we'll be getting perk tree's, which are different when compaired to the perks Fallout 3 and NV gave us.

We can go anime style and call it an EX Skill but I never really liked anime though.

I always figured it could be a skill focus. Since in all honesty a perk is something that allows you to add a sense of taking a overall skill and focusing on a specific part so your perfecting specific parts of the skill. So they could say chose a focus for a skill and then you chose where you want to focus in that skill so if its one handed and you want to be a swordsman then you can focus on swords.

In the end you have skills, "perks" or a "Skill Focus" could be a proper name to say this is what your focusing on as a specific proficiancy in that skill.

Its like saying I like cooking, but I focus on oriental dishes.

Why even give them a label? For example, say on your third level up you can choose whether or not you specialize in a certain type of one handed weapon (axe, sword, blunt, etc.). I imagine that it will be presented in a type of tree that will allow you to become fairly well rounded but not very deep, or very very good at one particular thing. Does it really matter what we call it?

i chose "feat" because i love dungeons and dragons.
i don't like "perk" because 1, it isn't original to bethesda games and 2, it reminds me of fallout and 3, it just sounds girly and sissy.

The term feat reminds me of Knights of the Old Republic. So I like it.

For everyone who likes "perk," ...perk is something you get in addition to something else, idk, it's like calling it a "bonus" or "free prize." I prefer the term Ability, because that's what all these are.

The ability to bypass armor.
The ability to cause damage-over-time bleeding.
Your new position within the Fighter's Guild comes with the perk of reduced armor repair cost from guild members.

I dont like ability. Its just.. I dont like it.

The only ones to me that are exceptable to me are, Talent, Feat, or Perk, and I prefer perk.

Plus they are a perk. They are a Perk of leveling up.

i feel famous

i'm partial to "specialization", myself, since really that's what it boils down to - if you go with the sword perks you're specializing in swords, for instance. i'd be cool with proficiency or talent, too.

How about we don't give them a name at all?

I like how Divinity 2 notified the player when you did a mind read and received new skill points.

"You've gained additional insights."

That happened in Oblvion, it never said "You have leveled up," it said " You should rest and meditate on what you've learned". And during the screen where you increased attributes it always said something about "you are finally learning the secrets to greatness".

Nothing ever about leveling up or feats or perks.

Calling them 'Feats' would be an awesome, virtually costless nod to the series's PnP roots.

Its not like magica is original to Bethesda games either.

And if people are going to argue 70% of people don't like the word perks, I can just as easily say 85% or more of the people in this forum don't want some of the other options either. Twisting information to fit your needs is a two way street. :P

true, but then again they are changing "fatigue" to "stamina"
originality works, but so does magica.

This really just boils down to personal prefference. I honestly don't care. It was how perks were exicuted that I was interested in, and it looks as if it isn't a carbon copy of Fallouts perk system. They could call it something really random or it could have no name at all, wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I can see...just barely if I squint :P ... why many people want a different name. I just find it rather redundant I guess.

I like "expertise" - but other terms like "ability", "proficiency", "mastery" are also ok. We're talking about a capacity you have, an ability.

"Feat" sounds like something you've done, a deed you've performed. This doesn't sound like a capacity you can re-deploy on different occasions in different circumstances. For similar reasons, I don't like "gain".

"Trait" and "perk" sound too neutral.

Just to throw in my two cents, on a largely inconsequential matter. :D

Talent/Talents sound most appropriate to me. I think people need to realise we will have more than one of these "perks" and as such they need to think in plurals. Gains and Expertises (not a real word obviously) don't really have a ring to them.

Expertise is a mass noun, so of course it doesn't admit of pluralisation. There are ways around this... We could talk of elements of expertise, or areas of expertise, and so on (these don't sound so good, but hopefully you get the idea).

I'm aware of that but like i said they don't sound good. Just think about it in the context of the game and the UI and i'm sure you will see what i mean.

With Talent you could have Talent Points and Talent Tree's. Your Characters Talent's sounds natural to me. I'm not saying you're Characters expertise doesn't sound natural but i just can't see it working like the perk system.
