A better descriptor for the term "PERK"

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:22 am

I don't like the term "perk", it just seems too superficial for it's importance in the game. In Skyrim, "perks" will be a huge part of the game which defines your character, so I would hope that they could find a better word to use.

In a previous topic: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1166456-love-the-addtion-of-perks-but-cant-we-find-another-term/, we had lots of discussion on whether there is a better term for "Perk".

It was suggested I do a poll, therefore, with this, I would love to see what term the community thinks would be best to describe this important game feature.

This is my first poll - so hope I got the formatting correct.

The term "Skill Perk" was used for Oblivion... what's the big deal?

I like expertise. Seems the most apt given what we know. Mastery would only make sense once you have all perks in a given tree (all mace perks, for example).

Perk is the best way to describe a perk, or would you want to call a car "four wheeled transport vehicle"?

I'm not a huge fan of the term "perk" but with an Elder Scrolls game, it is kind of like saying "There is one too many sesame seeds on my sesame seed bun".

A rose by any other name is still a rose.

Well, we could go back to the origin of the idea and call it a "Feat", or even a "Class Feature".

I like ability the most.

Feat makes me think of DnD, Im not playing DnD Im playing the Elder Scrolls.

And in all honesty most of the options dont make sense to me. Like "Youve leveled up and get to chose an expertise." It does not sound right. Just leave it as a perk.

Mastery because I usually specialize in one specific thing on my characters.

Matery would only come once you completed an entire section of a Perk Tree.

Ability just sounds, like something anybody else would call it adn not unique.

Horseless carriage of course.

As far as the perk thing goes I think the big worry would be that they keep them nice and balanced with each other to at least minimize the optimal build issue and cookie cutter characters.

Poll needs a they can call them whatever they want option.

Proficiency has my vote though I really like Feat as well. One describes almost perfectly what the perks are while the other is a nice nod to the series' roots in Dungeons & Dragons.

Perk seems good enough for me, but in case, you can:

  • Gain additional bonus for the skill.
  • Learn a new trick or specialized trick for the skill.
  • Discover his new flair of the skill.
  • Unravel another example of your talent with the skill.

But IMHO Feat does not fit with skill perks.

Why not just call it mastery perk like in OB? No one found a problem with that ;)

In my opinion, it gives credence to the "Fallout with magic/Oblivion with guns" detractors. It just feels like Beth is lacking creativity when they pull terminology directly from their other main series. Especially when it describes a similar system.

Want to pick more than one answer though, I like a few terms more than perk.

the term Perk has existed since early Pen & paper rpg, so don′t just run down that route.
