Is it better to play Fallout FO1/2 before playing FO4? I personally already played it, but I'm sure many here haven't yet. Think Beth should let Obsidian reboot both those games for next-gen since they're pretty old.

I think it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the history of Fallout. Whether that includes playing it or just reading about it is entirely up to the player.
I started with Fallout 3 and like it, so I figured I'd give the originals a shot. It didn't take me long to realize that even after all my years playing video games (30+) , I still didn't enjoy isometric or turn based games. I was instantly put off the originals despite the fact I thoroughly enjoyed the story and lore of the series.
I still respect the originals, even if I don't have the stomach to play them, and just wish that Beth would take a bigger clue from them than they have. (not counting the upcoming FO4, since NO ONE here on the forums has ever played it...short of Bethesda employee)
As for rebooting the series; I don't think that's in Obsidian's power. That would rest with Bethesda themselves if they chose that path. Whether that would be a good thing or not, is most certainly debatable.
They're unconnected plotwise (only connected in world/basic lore), and they're entirely different in style & mechanics. So, no - while they're good games, and playing them would be a good choice, one does not in any way "need" to play them before FO4.
It really isn't necessary to play the first ones before FO4 and as much as I love them, I wouldn't recommend them quite honestly, since they are hard to get into at first and some people might not have the patience for that.
But if people still do want to try I would say go with FO1 and do all there is to do there before moving onto FO2 whose beginning is an absolute SLOG. I must have quit a couple dozen times on FO2 and always fell back to FO1 but one day I just decided to go through FO2 one last time and the game picked up considerably after I got past klamath and the den. After finishing it I personally feel like FO2 is a lot better than FO1 in a lot a ways but [censored] the temple of trials man.
I think that anyone should give them a try at least. Even if they don't particularly like the turn-based or iso view, the lore and story are fantastic. I always hated the game type, but I found them to be phenomenal games.
Although, I don't think anyone needs to play FO1 or 2 before playing 4, but they definitely should give them a try regardless. Different coast, different developers and different direction of gameplay.
No i just don't like the view, i never have in any game.
I already played through them besides Tactics to which I still need to come around and complete, but it's good to play them to know where the series orgins are at and the lore more better, plus their enjoyable games that will defiantly kill time. But it's not required to play them to understand 4, I would advise to play them just because they're fun.
It isn't really "better" to play them in any order, if you don't judge older games by their limitations. You could either way, start with the new non isometric fallouts and then play the originals and you'll suddenly understand references you didn't know were references. do it the other way and you will appreciate what its like to become even more immersed in what it would be like to BE in that setting.
If you want an introduction to what Fallout truly started out as then yeah.
If you just want an idea of what to expect from Fallout 4 in terms of previous characters and factions then no, Fallout 3 is better to play then.
I voted yes start playing Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 before playing Fallout 4.
Nevermind misread topic.
No I would not consider it required playing for those particular reasons, although they are on my list of games to play before you die. Because they are good games, and are enjoyable for a variety of reasons.
I've played them all, and while it's not necessarily required to play them to play Fallout 4, anyone should try them out. They're good and incredibly enjoyable RPGs to play. And there is nothing wrong with playing some more Fallout games.
Also they are dirt cheap on Steam right now.
I'd say they are among the very best RPGs to this day, anyone should give them a try.
Not so much because you are going to play Fallout 4, but just because FO1 & 2 are realy good games. I would honestly recommend annyone to just play them once just to experience the games and how they feel. They can however not be compared to these HD/3D version games, their style is to different.
Most of the lore you can find can also be read online on the wiki if you want to, so you dont need to play the games, but i still would recommend atleast trying them once for those who haven't yet.
My first Fallout game was 3. When 1 and 2 came out i was not that old, my first real RPG experience was BG2. Anywho, i got them for free a couple of years ago on GoG. So why not. Played them, love them. So if you have the patience to sit down with that type of rpg and also is interested in the lore, then go for it.
no because fallout 4 is a bethesda game, the original games were ok for their time but its like saying should you drive a go kart before you drive a car
Well, if you're a fan of any series, if you come into the middle, there's no shame in getting to know it's past.
My first Final Fantasy was FF7, and I went back and searched up ROMs of the older ones just to see how the series developed.
I really hope Bethesda plan to bring fallout 1 & 2 in line with 3 & 4, would make a lovely box set. Plus would be cool playing them in first person after all these years.
The original Fallout's are better played if playing NV, because there's a lot of west coast lore and factions in the two games, that come up in NV. For FO4 since it's an east coast game play Fallout 3 instead.
I don't think Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios will ever release Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One, let alone give both of those classic old Fallout video games a First Person view (FPS).
Bethesda Game Studios also never does reboots, remakes or remasters, and I hope they never do and continue to just develop brand new video games or sequels to their existing Intellectual Properties (IP's).
