Better textures with no textures mod?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:59 pm

I don't use any texture enhancing mods as I think the game actually look alright Vanilla now. But I remember the graphics when the game first came out, they were quite ugly many places, especially distant landscapes and weapoins and stuff.
What I don't really get is that, now the textures look much sharper and distant land look much better and I haven't installed any mods to alter that. Where does these sharper textures come from, patch 1.2 or the unofficial patches or something?

Not so sure about textures in general, but the Oblivion/SI update apparently did improve the distant visuals, yes.

Or so I seem to remember reading at the TOTO site...

edit: Aha, indeed that was so -

Setting textures size to Large in-game is making quite a difference. Maybe you did not set it to Large in the past?

If you eventually care for better / sharper textures that are as performant as the vanilla textures, look for the "Vibrant Series" made by Corepc; they work in conjunction with Bomret textures. If you like vanilla, you will like them even more and you will not lose any performance from them. ;)

Well, my specs are

Win 7 64
Q9560@3.8ghz
8gb rm
5870 1gb

1920x1200

But I have always run the game on full graphics.

I just remember the distant land to look extremely tiled in Vanilla, but in my game now, the distant land looks quite good. The tiles has been kinda washed out.

Bomret's Detailed Normals, even. ;)

But yes, I completely agree - they make for an excellent, zero-impact replacement.

Alternateively, if you like the vanilla textures, just using Bomret's Normals makes one heck of a difference, without changing the basic "style" at all.

Yeah, that is what my game look likes now. But that do you mean about SI update? I mean, I don't even have SI but are you referring to patch 1.2?

I will have a look at those, thanks.

Either one. It's more or less the same patch, but one is for those who also have SI.

So yeah, the 1.2 patch.

Yeah, it really DOES look good. And with no performance hit, that sounds great. My rig is medium to highend yet I still have problems in this game, my fps goes from 40 to 60 all the time and an avg. of 48, I guess. And that is without any gfx mods. Just guess this game is pretty demanding.

Hehe. Not mine, actually. They're straight from the TOTO page, at devakm (I think that's the name).

So, can't guarantee that, unfortunately. But I'd say they're generally good with facts and such, so...

edit: Or, on the other hand, the latter might also have QTP for the foreground and "middle distance-ish". Hm. Not sure, as it doesn't appear to specify. Maybe the difference isn't quite that dramatic. If not, my bad.

Mads, are you using the Oblivion Stutter Remover (OSR)? If not, you should if you experience stuttering.

Generally I would say that FPS anything in excess of 30 is very good indeed and not needed in my opinion. With OSR you can limit your FPS and it will smooth out the display of frames, while at the same time give processing (CPU) time to the game engine to do all the AI and scripts calculations, loading textures etc... (I'm simplifying) Overall you will have a much smoother, nicer game.

I have seen the mod you are talking about, Tommy, just never did anything about it. I will try it out when I get home from work, it sounds great, thanks.

MadsHilde, you could also take a look at these textures from miknmel1, i use all of them together with Bomrets and a severall others. Among miknmel1 texture mods there is only one that uses a esp namely Improved Signs, all the other ones do not have a esp. And IMO they all look great and i do not notice a loss in FPS on my computer. :)
