Sadly then i may never be able to use this as I get ctds and if it requires EMC dll that in turn is faulty no matter how good this is it is still then built upon a shaky foundation.

Similar story Screen Effects and obge.

I do believe that Enhanced Music Control causes CTD's. I was getting very frequent CTD's until I removed it.

with the right context everything will cause CTDs. if you throw a match into a bucket of fuel you will get fire. until you remove the fuel. so it's the fuel that is causing the fire??

I was getting very, very frequent CTDs while I had enhanced music control.dll, I guess its a common issue, will the mod still work correctly without it?

okay. but... is EMC the match or the fuel here?
we all know now that EMC makes some mp3 codec conflicts visible. we get a lag every 2 or 3 seconds in game (visible, not audible!) if we have 2 or more mp3 codecs installed.
this is solved by removing EMC, but EMC is clearly not causing this. another solution would be to clean up the mp3 drivers.

so... what is really causing that CTDs?

BMS will not work without EMC at all.

Well the music fades in and out, stops when I sneak etc(this is without EMC.dll), and it doesn't make me lag or anything, it just crashes the game, no lag or any signs like that before the crash

BMS controls what Music Type EMC plays (and creates the custom playlists Folders). You could get a cell's Music Type with OBSE and play a song with Sound Commands, but it's not possible to collect the list of mp3's in your music folders. Otherwise you could rewrite most of the EMC's backend in obse and have very limited music functionality. All of the uninterrupted music resume features are a part of EMC and could not be done with obse.

set up a fresh vista installation on an empty partition. only install oblivion and emc. if you need a special driver for any weird soundcards or something... install the latest or better use onboard sound temporarily.

you will see / hear it working.

i'm almost sure.

VERSION 2.0 beta is online!!

NEW IN VERSION 2.0:

- read the readme if you are upgrading!!
- the POWER OF MUSIC spell, that can change the music in all cells but wilderness cells.
- playlist for castles
- 7 custom playlists
- 'playlist' for load screens that plays a few seconds until the plugin can recognize the target cell. i.e. no more default music is kicking in for a moment during cell load.
- the pause feature and the night playlists are working again.
- completely changed the script to handle that many playlists.

I think it may have been a conflict with oblivion stutter remover, I set the heapmode in OSR to 1 and my game is much more stable now, I can play with EMC.dll without crashing now :)

Why am I getting an error when I try to set the music in the dark brotherhood sanctuary to the dark brotherhood playlist?
Is it because I don't have music in all the other folders yet? I deleted the dummy.mp3 in factions/darkbrothers and added some of my own mp3s but it won't recognize the playlist in game

Here's a picture of my music folder and the info from the console in game http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2308/bmserror.jpg

You need to leave the dummy file in the folder, I've left them in the folders and have had no problems.

this is a typing error. thank you for reporting!
but... why do you assign a playlist that is already assigned??

the dummy file is a real mystery. nobody really knows what to do with it.

you can read it in the readme, btw. but in fact you can keep it or delete it. but DON'T DELETE IT IF THE FOLDER IS EMPTY!!

I've loaded your latest Beta (Beta 2) and noted the following issues:

Custom Music Playlists for the Fighters' Guild (Layewin) and Inns (2 Sisters' Inn-Layewin) didn't play when I entered the appropriate cells. I was unable to change the playlists for these cells using the The Power of Music Spell. (I've checked the BetterMusicSystem ini and made sure that these locations were enabled.)

I was able to get Custom Playlists for Chapels (Layewin), the Mages Guild (Layewin) and the Dark Brotherhood (Layewin) to play. I was also able to successfully use The Power of Magic Spell to change playlists for these locations.

What result should I expect when I select the Default Playlists Button in The Power of Music Spell Menu?

I've left the dummy.mp3s in all folders unique to the BetterMusicSystem. I did this in contravention to the ReadMe instructions because it was noted earlier in this thread that the Dark Brotherhood Custom Playlist needed the file to play properly. Was I correct to do so?

Are there compatibility issues between your mod and the Better Cities Mod? (I currently have Better Cities enabled.)

Please advise.

I'm going to give this mod a go. Anyone have any good music packs for this?

EDIT: I'm noticing two problems.

Major FPS drop, dialogue screen are even lagging.

It's not doing anything, it's really only muted my music. I went through the ini and set everything up so I'm not sure whats happening, I'm not getting any console print out of whatever isn't working either.

BETA 3 is online!

fixed: there was a problem with the pause feature. when a pause was active, the playlist was not changed, not even on cell change. some of you may have noticed the loading music playing, but if you don't have any, there was just silence.

fixed: you can play this plugin now with a clean save or first install. why did no one tell me that GetGameLoaded returns 0 on first run??

now really fixed:
no more home playlist in faction houses

1. Custom Music Playlists for the Fighters' Guild (Layewin) and Inns (2 Sisters' Inn-Layewin) didn't play when I entered the appropriate cells. I was unable to change the playlists for these cells using the The Power of Music Spell. (I've checked the BetterMusicSystem ini and made sure that these locations were enabled.)

i numbered your quote, so it's easier to answer:

1. it sound like that pause bug mentioned above. should be fixed now. tell me if not...

2. you can assign any default vanilla oblivion playlist with the power of music spell! even battle music!
to do so simply choose 'default playlists' with the spell.

3. you can leave the dummy or you can eat it or put a spell on it. but again: NEVER DELETE THE DUMMY IF THIS WOULD LEAVE THAT FOLDER EMPTY!
4. no. you can use BMS in ANY cell that you can enter.

Major FPS drop, dialogue screen are even lagging.

It's not doing anything, it's really only muted my music.

yes. the beta 2 did not run on first install. this is fixed now. sorry!

but: there is no FPS drop! this seems to be that stutter problem some people have talked about. search this or the EMC thread for 'stutter' or simply delete all your mp3 codecs but one. you have several installed. they are conflicting.

Ok I'll give it another go then. Define codec, like windows codec or an Oblivion codec? and how would I go about fixing this?

Ok I got it working, stutter is gone. Still getting occasional silence though. I'm going to try turn of silent sneak and get back to you.

a quick update to BETA 4:
night and storm did not stop when entering a dungeon.
added an extra safety loop to ensure the music will change if EMC refuses to change it the first attempt.

Still getting occasional silence though. I'm going to try turn of silent sneak and get back to you.

this may be the pause feature. or the bug mentioned above. which is fixed now... :)

osr enabled with heap mode 1, and bms is enabled

edit: forgot to mention, the game freezes but the music keeps playing

edit2: i disabled osr completely and my game still freezes whenever it tries to play music from any of the folders added by bms, dummy.mp3 and silence.mp3 don't freeze my game, any other mp3 does though

Got a question about the combat music stuff, please correct me if any of the following assumptions are incorrect.

This mod will sometimes create combat with a dummy rat to force the battle music even though the real battle is over, right? So the standard IsInCombat function cannot distinguish between a dummy battle and a real battle. Now my question is, is there a way to hook into the Better Music System's combat detection to determine if such a dummy battle is happening as opposed to a real battle? A script variable or global I can check perhaps. If not, would it be possible to add such an option, I imagine some mods might find that useful. :)
