Big battles?

Post » Sun Sep 19, 2010 9:23 am

do you think their will be any big battles in this game? the fight at Bruma was the biggest that i can think of from oblivion but even then it was only about 12 people fighting. i want to be involved in a huge battle this time fighting side by side with a lot of allies against waves of enemies. hopefully its possible on xbox 360 and it wont freeze if more then 10 characters are on the screen at once

How is it not possible due to consoles. I'm not saying they could put 100's of characters on the screen. but they can defiantly fit 12 people on the screen with little to no lag on a console. These hardwares have been pushed much harder in the last years and I'm sure if you can smack a huge dragon on screen. Making a civil war battle scenario wouldnt be hard.

For sure, but i guess i just dont feel that 10-12 npcs fighting is a "big battle"

Halo Reach accomplished this and it had battles with 24-50 people fighting at a time... Nothing compared to mount&blade where you can have 100 people at a time but still its big for consoles

I wouldn't mind having some kind of contained battle, with some animations and low poly models far off that make it seem big. But chances are it will be you + Baurus (*cough cough* excuse me Esbern) + 2 other people vs 8 enemies for any large battle.

Edit: @ Hi!: Yes but all of those are low poly models AND/OR Small environments with anything past what you can see not even made AND completely pathetic AI.

Not to mention the fact that there can be dozens of background variables being constantly checked and updated in TES games, where Halo and M&B basically just track health and cinematic triggers.

True. Perhaps that was an understatement. I can see them doing a 15 on 15 battle with ease

The number isn't a problem for consoles. They could handle Mount and Blade, if it was ported to them. The trick to Mount and Blade is that Mount and Blade managed what it did by severely toning down graphics and cutting out physics. The same could be done for these consoles (they aren't some severely incapable platforms, Mount and Blade utilized low-tech graphics to handle the battles), but Bethesda chose to prioritize graphics and other technical features, instead.

@ Seti18: True, but Halo had a lot less gameworld information loaded during such battles. I really dont care if we cant have big battles its just one of those pipe dream kinda things. Im a console player and a PC gamer with TES. I enjoy both platforms.

I never said they couldnt i simply said that it wouldnt be as large scale as something like mount&blade. You missed my point however, Halo Reach accomplished having large scale battles without sacrificing graphics or physics, so why couldnt Skyrim

Halo may have sacrificed AI capabitilies, Halo was a 360-exclusive game (as opposed to Skyrim, which will for more than one platform... more than one console) that allowed developers to focus more on the strengths and weaknesses of the 360, specifically, Halo likely didn't have the interactivity as Skyrim, and, to be perfectly honest, Bethesda haven't always been the best at optimization.

Lol i have to agree that they did sacrifice ai capabilities because they were terrible at driving... terrible.... And i didnt think about how its not just 360... hmm im sure that they will find a way and that battle sizes will have increased drastically... Because lets all be honest here, the battle at bruma was pitiful to say the least...

Fallout 3, alone, demonstrated larger battle capabilities (slightly). I'm sure they'll be able to get battles a bit larger, as they managed to do so with Fallout 3, but I'm pretty confident we're not at the point of actual battles, yet, but rather just decent-sized skirmishes. I'm sure they'll be larger than the Battle of Bruma, though, if they are in the game.

I mean they have something where they build up all this hype for a battle and then when you get there thinking "holy crap im in for a huuuuge fight" and then you see like 5 guards and then 3 daedra come out... I dont even understand how that was worthy of a statue being built in my honor... But maybe can avoid that in Skyrim if they cant back up the hype they build... I mean i understand how difficult it is to do what the devs do but i mean if you cant back up your words then its pointless

the ai in halo is decent untill you put something in a vehicle....

l4d2 however put many simplistic ai on screen (along with complex ones) i think the key is to use advanced ai for all npcs until the game begins to strugle, when the game starts to struggle it should then simplify the ai of of screen/background places.
