As big a change as morrowind to oblivion?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:38 pm

there was a HUGE difference between oblivion adn morrowind, and my question is if you think skyrim will be that much different. graphic wise, gameplay wise, and everything else considered as well.

I think it will quite darastic , but nowhere near the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion graphically. On consoles, it should look a bit better than Oblivion in most aspects, with much improved character models, LOD scaling and draw distance, and much better animations. Everything else should look fairly similar to most other Gamebryo"Creation Engine" games. Gameplay wise, it doesn't seem all that different from Oblivion, with the exception of the more "in your face" brutal combat, and tweaked level scaling/perks that should play more like Fallout3. I guess I would say kind of a hybrid of Oblivion and FO3 but without the guns obviously.

Definitely. Just look at the information we have already. New engine, all the graphics look better, gameplay is being upgraded to be a lot more versatile and responsive. No doubt that it'll be the step up from Oblivion that Oblivion was to Morrowind.

I thought that the creation engine was new, and this is the first game it's being used with.

The Creation Engine is new. From the Gameplay Trailer the graphics look amazing (except for the water rapids). All the graphics are from a Xbox 360 (which is suprising).

It still has roots in GameBryo. It's apparently not a 'small modification' like from Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Fallout 3, but more of a complete overhaul this time.

I love GameBryo, though. Really. There's no engine that scalable and customizable on the market.

Stop with the GameBryo stuff. It's like calling a fun amusemant park that was built on top of a cemetary, a cemetary.

This is why they take 5 years to make a new Elder Scrolls game, they like to virtually "restart".

I dare you to find a single game engine more suited for creating a sandbox game. Daaare.

But didn't the company that created GameBryo go bankrupt and there for it is no longer on the market. I think in order to keep the tech, they had to overhaul it to a degree that it was architecturally similar but so far off the mark as to be their own engine (which they had been working towards for nearly a decade anyway). Naming it the Creation Engine is like masking the fact that it is still based on GameBryo just as GameBryo was based on NetImmerse (which evolved to the point that it became GameBryo). Fancy-schmancy names and all that jazz...

There's a huge difference between all the elder scrolls games so I can only hope Skyrim will be no different.

The nature of Bethesda's development plan dictates that every game feels like a brand-new game, rather than the cavalcade of +1 sequels we're accustomed to. I really love this approach, though I always wondered why Bethesda never saw fit with Fallout and Oblivion, to really go full-tilt on Expansions, given the length of time their standard-iteration developmental cycle runs. One full expansion every 18months based on the already existing tech? Seems reasonable.

Anyway, just by the sound of Skyrim, it's definitely going to feel totally unfamiliar. I guess that's part of having so many glaring faults in the series. With so much to improve upon an already fantastic game series, it has to be relatively easy.

Exactly each game is Unique and shouldn't be unfairly compared.

But from the look of things Skyrim will be the best so far.

Im completely opposed to the remark that Oblivion marked an allegedly "huge" difference from Morrowind. It was a graphical change. Even before it came out I had seen it would be a proper sequel to Morrowind. I think Skyrim is gonna mark a change more akin to Daggerfall ----> Morrowind.

I think Skyrim will be close to being as different from Oblivion as Oblivion is to Morrowind, but Skyrim may fall just a little short of being that different. It's hard to say though. We still know so little about Skyrim.

Seem to be a lot of naive people on these boards.. Of course it won't be as big as the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion. We're still stuck using the 360's hardware, whereas Morrowind to Oblivion was an entire generation. There'll be a small jump, but not much more than that, the 360 simply can't handle it, and this game is primarily aimed there.

It won't be as big a jump as Morrowind to Oblivion but they'll be some changes that are noticeable and the changes from Oblivion to Skyrim will be for the better as long as they don't make Bretons too ugly as that's my worst fear right now.

hey go put everything in Oblivion on minimum except for lighting and turn off LOD and go stare at a hill or a pier and tell me it doesn't look [censored] identical to Morrowind except for better trees and blue fog because it does.

everything about Skyrim sounds like a pretty big jump so yeah. not DAGGERFALL TO MORROWIND big, i doubt they'll ever hit anything that huge again, but still really really big.

I think the biggest improvements will be artistic in nature, as in the hired better artists. Better optimizing the engine will allow them to pull more power out of the old hardware, but not enough to make any major advances.

Although I don't know (and neither does anyone else) because we have next to zero information about the game yet, I'm going to guess and say yeah, it'll probably be a huge change gameplay wise.
