big freeze problem

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:36 am

Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my Oblivion for PC. Often but suddenly my game freezes for 15 seconds. Even if I am just standing still, I have that freezes. I guess that it is a problem with the loading procedure of Oblivion because if I am standing still and the one Oblivion soundtrack has ended, i have a freeze which ends with the start of the next soundtrack. Another Example: When I killed a rat, i have a freeze of 15 seconds until the game reacts. So what could be the answer to my problem?
I don't know since when I have this problem, but i tryed a new install. I am using some mods with the mod manager but even if I deactivate all, the problem wont go away.

My System:
Vista 64bit
Core 2 Duo E5200 @ 3,25 Ghz (Scythe Mugen)
AMD HD 4870 512mb
4GB DDR2 RAM
3 HDs (Samsung F1 320GB, Samsung F2 500GB, Samsung F3 1000GB)
newest mainboard/grafic drivers installed

I am new at this forum, please be patient.

EDIT: I uploaded a video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AumI9AjqVI

So every time the music changes your game "freezes" or "pauses", right? Sounds like a hardware issue or possibly a sound configuration issues.

First try disabling sound in the Oblivion.ini and see if the problem is still present, or if it's resolved. To disable sound you need to find the following line in the Oblivion.ini. Go to Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini
bMusicEnabled=1bSoundEnabled=1

To be safe disable both of those and see if you still have the problem. To disable them simply change the =1 to =0 so it looks like below.
bMusicEnabled=0bSoundEnabled=0

Save your changes and start Oblivion to test. Report back after you test.

Thanks for you advice!
Now there are no freezes anymore. I will try to activate sound while music is still deactivated and edit this post then.

Edit: If i only activate the sounds, it has no freezes too. After I reactivated music, the freezes turned back.
Big THX to Smooth for this hint. It's a huge step, because I can play without the Oblivion music for sure. But maybe the problem can be solved completely.

Your best bet is buying a soundcard supporting hardware acceleration (i.e. Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer) and using that together with Creative ALchemy to restore hardware acceleration.
