Big Town Defense

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:53 am

So, in my previous games the only two I've ever used are the Science and Small Guns options, and I am curious as to the effectiveness of the other two:
Sneak and Explosives.
I am about to try each of these and check out how they fair in the super mutant attack, but I am also very concerned about wasteland critters, (I've heard horror stories involving albino scorpions and bloodbaths).
I've already upgraded their weaponry and some of their armor.
Thoughts?

Explosives already seems to be a bust- followers trigger the mines, and I lost half the town due to dogmeat flopsing his happy ass around.

I've never had any luck with anything other than teaching them Small Guns. But I lay a minefield just outside the bridge anyway, so it's good.

I always found that small guns led to the worst survivability between it and the robots. The townspeople would take fire themselves, vs having high-armor robots soak it up.

So far the sneak is being finicky, twice someone was caught in the open and blew it for the entire town, but I have to stop testing for the moment.

:)

I give red and shorty mini guns and combat or leather armor.. teach them robots.. get my 8ball.

works well. nothing better for me than to see two mini guns patrolling.

laying that mine field before they show up does the trick as well, two seperate groups of 2.

cheers.

Ha, I'm more thinking of end-game, lvl 21+. I don't want to mine the entrance because the mines love friendly fire. Especially with caravans. Heavily invested in and equipped caravans.

And the problem is that an Albino Radscorpion, which spawns anywhere normal Radscorpions spawn, has fully 3x the health of a Sentry Bot.

As of right now, I need to know if teaching them to sneak will save them from a radscorpion, ghoul reaver, or mutant overlord and the like.
Especially the Scorpions.

....................As for personal arms............................I went and upgraded all the citizens to higher firepower, including 2 ARs, 1 CAR, 2 Sydney's Ultra 10mm, 1 Laser Rifle, 1 Sniper Rifle (red), 1 Scoped 44 (shorty), and 1 missile launcher (timebomb).

Also, I think I am going to go with Robots anyway, as after experimenting with the sneaking, I found that the sneaking is not, as I had hoped, an auto-hidden sort of deal. I had hoped that the creatures wouldn't notice the npcs if they were crouched right in front of the beasties, but this is not the case. They can be caught in the open, and if that were to happen with a scorpion then the town would be butchered.

So, I am now abandoning this thread as far as finding a solution is concerned. Many thanks to the two of you.

I lay my minefield to the right, far from the bridge and any possible spill over from the residents. I put one field at the corner, another closer in. Then I whip grenades at anything left standing. Then mop up with Blackhawk. After I teach them, I haul back to the front of town, because the faster I kill things, the less likely someone dies.

Rather than specific training, best defense that I've found---no loss of life---is location, location, location. Try the roof of the house and bring alot of ammo.

You don't have to place a permanent mine field near the town, it only has to exist long enough to take down those 4 Super Mutants that come around. Once those are taken care of the town is safe and you don't need to worry about anything anymore. So it sounds tome like you're way over-thinking that whole scenario. I've never bothered teaching them anything, I just kill the Super Mutants that arrive shortly after freeing Red and Shorty. And the town has always lived happily ever after.

And the problem is that an Albino Radscorpion, which spawns anywhere normal Radscorpions spawn, has fully 3x the health of a Sentry Bot.

Again, you're over thinking things. The only spawn points in that area are general Wasteland spawns, not just Radscorpions, meaning that any creature can spawn there. So the odds of having an Albino Scorpion appear in the area are fairly rare. Then it would have to wander off out of his designated zone in order to attack Big Town, which will be an even rarer occurrence. They're only allowed to wander an area of 1024 units, unless they're attacking something.

As of right now, I need to know if teaching them to sneak will save them from a radscorpion, ghoul reaver, or mutant overlord and the like.

They will never be attacked by a Reaver, there are no Ghoul spawns in the area. And an Overlord may be possible in that trailer nearby, but the patrol area there is so small that he would never end up in the settlement, unless he was following you in. So Radscorpions are the only possible danger they could face, but the odds of a really tough one showing up are slim.

PS: And this thread really should be in the Spoilers section.

I generally just plant my T45d encased self in the middle of the bridge and ready the minigun.

I let the dog harass them at the bridge them then headshots with the combat shotty usually ends it before anyone, important, gets hurt. Or in FWE the H&K 8 shot shotty.

Broken Steel dog eh'.

I just charge them with a shotgun while the town pisses itself.

I'm always at a low level with a Chinese Assault Rifle, a Combat Shotgun, and Combat Armor blasting any mutant dumb enough to even come near the town.
