Bigger and Better, the NEW Features

Post » Fri Jun 17, 2011 3:27 pm

Features like wood chopping and blacksmithing for example - if they implement it in a natural way that blends in with the rest of the world, it will add to the depth of the game. If they implement it like Fable II and make a mini-game out of it, it will almost certainly have the opposite effect and make the game feel dumbed down for a different audience.

Until we know how a lot of these new features work, it's difficult to judge what they're adding to the gameplay experience.

I thought I heard somewhere that the jobs wouldn't have mini-games, you just clicked to do it and your character did it automatically. I don't have a source for it and it might be my imagination.

You mean like a cutscene?

That's really not much better than making a mini-game out of it. Ideally, i'd like to chop wood in real-time, swinging an axe in first-person as I would normally.

I see your point sheograth88, and I share your fears, maybe some of the changes will lead to a more artificial experience, or even a less satisfying one, but we can't know yet for sure. The smithing system will be, in my opinion, crucial, if they let us combine pelts, materials and ore to build truly unique armor pieces... who would care about missing the greaves or the pauldron slot?

At this time we can only speculate, so all opinions are welcome, this thread only tries to compensate all those other dumbing-down apocalyptic threads that seem to argue the game is basically just being stripped of all meaningful content and turned into Dragon Age II (god how i hate that game!) I believe there is no evidence for such claims.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! :foodndrink:

This is a good thread, and was very much needed for me.

It's seems that it's pretty easy to focus on the negative when you spend too much time reading this forum.

Hey, you gave me my cherished fishy stick and i cheered you up with this thread. Karma!

I was playing Call of Duty 4 earlier today with my children, and that got me thinking about Skyrim.
I think it's going to favor a more mainstream type of game, it's going to be pretty simple.
I want something like Morrowind, not a simplified version of Oblivion.

We won't be able to dualwield shields. Gstaff (if I recall correctly) confirmed that PC Gamer got that wrong.

Aww, that svcks. It'd be cooler if they put that in anyway, so they could actually say you could put ANYTHING in your hands.

BUT I WANT TO DUAL WIELD SHIELDS http://i.imgur.com/ttaeh.png.

Haha, spot on!

While they did add things, they removed things that people actually used for "Role Playing".

Added to that they still haven't learned from the failures of the GPS Compass and decided it was a good idea to continue using it doesn't bode well for the game.

Adding things doesn't make the game bigger and bettter, it's what you take out... or in the case of the GPS compass what you leave in from previous games.

Why exactly doesn't it?

Very true, some of the new contents such as "Magnetism" (spells automatically redirected on target), "Finishing Moves" or "3D GPS Map" can't be considered as adding a new level of depth to the game, so I left those out.

The first one is something I actually like, as arguably if I'm throwing a lightning bolt that can arc automatically between my foes it should go right to my target. It's magic. I just hope that the magnetism is not quite as pronounced on the bows, if it is there at all, since it's really not necessary.

As for the other ones, it's all presentation. The finishing moves look neat and the 3D map looks amazing.

If you read my post you would have seen that I said "it's what you take out... or in the case of the GPS compass what you leave in from previous games"

Leaving the failures of previous games in the current game doesn't make it any better no matter how many things you add. Removing Role Playing things from the game doesn't make it any better no matter how many things you add.

Uh, shield bashing is in Oblivion. They may have changed how it works from Oblivion where it was the expert level perk for Block and it happened automatically (% chance of attempt happening), but shield bashing is a returning (modified however) feature and not a new one.

You don't control it, its not an active part of combat in OB, it is in SR that makes it a new gameplay feature.

True, the control is not direct, but I have been intentionally using it as of late. Blocking until a bash disrupts the opponent giving me the opening to strike. It is reliable enough for me to make regular use of it, and it is a part of combat (or at least has been a part of combat for me recently). They may have improved it, but it is not new.

As dissapointed as I am about the armor I fully understand them not wanting months of dealing with clipping issues and creating all the pieces to work together properly when they could be working on improving other parts of the game. I fully feel this will be better than any previous TES game if they can get a unique feel and variety to world that Oblivion sorely lacked. I fully support this and more positive threads on this board!

Man, there is a lot of negativity in the forums in general, even in this thread. I don't see what people have to be so down about; I'll be happy as long as Skyrim is much more polished and bug free than Oblivion. The way I see it, as long as they can deliver a polished bug free game, I can mod the hell out of it and change anything that I don't like.

That's why I don't like the whining about pauldrons( there were none in Oblivion either), or fewer pieces of armor, or magnetism for the magic. First of all, NONE of these things have been confirmed, and Second, if you don't like the way the game is, get it on pc and download some mods. There is no reason to moan about it either way.

Combining materials to make clothes, armor and weapons was one of the better things about Everquest. If they put this in Skyrim (along with everything else in the OP) plus all the stuff we don't know about yet, I will not leave my house for a month. It will be past Thanksgiving and I will miss it this year. :D

I don't believe this thread to be negative at all.

Well, I believe all of the things in this thread's list have been confirmed either by Todd himself, a developer or a trustworthy magazine, but you can check the nexus forums for the actual links. If you happen to find any mistakes i'll gladly correct it.

Anyway, I do believe YOUR post to be negative and full of whining.

I'm afraid i can't thank you for your opinion,
