Bigger than Dragons or Giant Spiders?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:18 pm

While playing Morrowind, where any of you scared to open chests or take any treasures inside of those daedric shrines? Did you hesitate because looking up at the statue in-front of you was terrifying, as you were certain that taking something would surely make something attack you? It was always scary to me, but it was disappointing every time that none of those statues ever came to life - you were only attacked by something that was the same size as you. Even in Oblivion, in a certain mission, some statues did come to life; but they were still the same size as you.

I'm all for dragons and giant spiders, but am I the only one who feels they are still too small for something the size that is Skyrim? Do any of you look at these pictures and say to yourself, "Something is missing..."?

In Morrowind (although I never really paid attention to the storyline and just played the game as I wanted) I was both excited and scared at the thought of Nerevar comming to life and wreaking havoc - but that feeling was short lived after it became apparent that I was only dealing with Dagoth Ur.

Then, in Oblivion, that feeling was a brought back during the end mission when Mehrunes Dagon is there in the flesh. However, that was also short lived as it became apparent how limited this circumstance was going to be. If you compare dragons and giant spiders to Mehrunes Dagon or Nerevar; Skyrim seems lacking somehow.

Looking at the picture with the dragon again, does anyone else imagine some type of 'giant' lurking in the fog below, being one of the real frights of Skyrim and the dragons are just the beginning revealer? I havn't really been following Skyim, and I've never played any TES games other than the ones mentioned, but is anyone else hoping for something bigger than dragons or giant spiders?

Personally, I will be a little disappointed in Skyrim if dragons and giant spiders are the biggest things there are.

I have a feeling that dragons are going to be supremely awesome in Skyrim. Not that concerned about their size.

But I know what you're saying about the unnerving feeling in some of those shrines in MW. Very creepy.

I find it hard to believe even that such a small person can kill a Dragon alone. I don't want to imagine how illogical it would be to fight something even bigger than a Dragon. You forgot the giants we saw in the trailer, btw. And those things are big enough for a game where you play a small humanoid person. Just my opinion. What would you want to do against a "giant" lurking in the fog? How could it add to the game?

It's not the size that counts. Its how fun they are to fight.

Are there giants? If I missed something then I'm sorry, as I said, I havn't really been following Skyrim.

I agree that if you went face to face with something the size of, say, Mehrunes Dagon, it would be a little bit stupid. But it doesn't have to be face to face. You can incorporate far ranged and magic into fighting something that size. Although there are obviously things than can and can't be done, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to dedicate a quest/dungeon/cave for something like this.

There is also water - which has always been lacking in content. I don't think a fight with a kraken would be too farfetched.

Mehrunes Dagon was the main enemy in Oblivion. You also forgot about Alduin, who will likely be significantly larger than just the normal dragons we see. It's also very likely there will be different dragons that come in various shapes and sizes. We have probably seen the smallest ones...

I do hope they bring back the creepiness of shrines which they had in Morrowind.

But seriously....those Dragons looks pretty big, i dont think we need them too much bigger

Haha, I didn't even realize they were giants from the camera angle. Wish the angle was normal so I could tell their size easier.

Indeed. If the wall-carvings in the trailer are to be believed, then Alduin is going to be truly massive; I would suspect that since the current dragons seem to be on par with Mehrunes Dagon in size, *not height* (including tails, wingspan and the like, not to mention the capacity to fly, which makes them even more imposing), then Alduin is likely to be larger than that. I would wager that the inevitable encounter with Alduin will be truly terrifying.

I don't think I've seen a more convincing dragon portrayed in any medium, than what Bethesda has shown so far. Everything about them is just so... perfect.

Size-wise, they're a perfect balance between imposing, approachable, and believable.

What about their tiny chicken wings?
(I know it is actually magic which allows them to fly, but my point still stands.)

Their wingspan is actually quite large. The actual wing structure, I've seen several iterations so far. None I can leverage a complaint against.

There comes a point when a creature becomes so large it cannot possibly exist. I think that if the giant spiders were twice their size they would just be ridiculously large. And if giants are as large as mehrunes dagon, it would be ridiculous. Same for dragons, I don't want a flying mehrunes dagon sized dragon over my head, that'd be ridiculous. Keep it awesome, less ridiculous beth, as you are right now.

I would like to see different sized dragons, spiders, orcs/ogres, etc. I found that in Oblivion their storm atronaches were not as nearly as big as i had hoped. I would also like to see "boss" or "king" type monsters.

So like if i enter a spider nest or cave i want to fight an army of small spiders or a medium size spider, then maybe towards the end of the cave when you go to grab that treasure you've been waiting for, BAM!... a giant king spider pops out.

Not particularly. That spider seems alot bigger than the "giant" spiders I've seen in most games.

And the dragon picture? I look at that one and think "wow, that's a large building!" :)

I don't think Mehrunes Dagon was so much "Big" as he was just horribly animated and designed. I think they would have been better off just painting a wall red and having it on Fire.

I might as well be beating a dead horse in my response, as most things have already been said, but I'll go ahead.

Size does indeed create a euphoria of emotions: fear, fascination, awe, and it might spawn quite a few profanities from word of mouth. There's nothing wrong with that. What I'm reading from you is that you want that fascination, and I'm right there with you.
Although I'm inclined to also state that one can feel the aforementioned emotions if presented correctly for any enemy; I can feel awe as a dragon would land in my path, fascination as I see it take off, and tense up in fear as I'm forced to run away. All these feelings can be felt if the dynamics of an enemy are presented correctly.

That'd be a nice surprise when swimming around lol. Rather than a slaughter fish once every 3 minutes. Are there any articles about Skyrims water creatures anywhere?

i actually dont want them to big. the only game ive seen that seemed to get the huge monster vs player battles at least somewhat right, and it still looked a bit silly just not as much as other games, was colossus for PS3. that was mostly to the monsters being really slow.

the dragons in skyrim look like they are fast and the giants seemed to walk at normal speed as well so if you have a battle with either i expect to get my ass handed to me unless i use ranged attacks. if i try and use melee on something that big i should be killed with the first blow or at the very least sent flying backwards and lose most of my health.

dark messiah did this pretty well with the cyclops. it was slow enough that you could outmaneuver it but if it got a hold of you kiss your ass goodbye.
