bigger wasteland mods?

Are there any mods that just make the wasterland in F3 bigger? I think it would be a great idea to have the map at least 4x the size it is now, with the POIs spread out across it. That way I actually feel like a wanderer in a huge empty space. Kinda like the first two games.

I think that the map borders are hard coded and that would prevent you from simply making the map bigger.

Earlier Fallout games may have given the illusion of more space on the map as you watched the dotted line representing your player crossing the map from town to town, but Fallout 3 actually has far more playable space than all of the other games combined.

Yeah what Badpenny says. FO1 and 2 really didn't have much space at all, they actually had ONLY POIs and nothing else(aside from the odd random encounter here and there), so they're not the best examples.

Now if you want to talk about expansive landmass, Daggerfall would be the game to reference...

I've wondered if it might be possible to chop up the FO3 map into individual areas and then implement the dotted line on a map travel system. But the problem is that you would then have borders in every area - kinda silly.

I've also wondered if you could just implement the dotted-line-on-a-map-screen as a fast-travel interface. Instead of clicking on a location in your pipboy map and "beaming" there, you would click on a "Travel" button which would bring up a map screen. Then, click on a destination and watch the dotted line crawl. Might make fast travel a little more fun to use.

I like that idea, especially if random encounters could interrupt the travelling. I think that fast travel in FO3 is too safe.

The border on the map is just a region setting that can be edited in the GECK, and removed. There is also an ini setting that will disable borders. Then you can move beyond the border and see a lot of land that is available for editing. However considering the development time in creating the existing world areas, making something even double the size of what there is now would be a huge project. Some teams from Oblivion did the same thing trying to expand the existing world map, but I don't know how far they got.

The Oblivion mods are what gave me the idea. There are currently fully playable heightmaps for all of Valenwood, Elsweyr, Summerset Isles, and Blackmarsh. I think just disabling the borders and expanding the land would work fine.

Does anyone know if this possible? Such a small tweak would vastly improve both F3 :fallout: and OB :obliviongate:!

I might post this idea in the Oblivion forums and see if they can give us an answer.
