Such as fettered potential role-playing opportunities, discrepancies between what is said and how it is said etc, problems that apply to both NPCs and the PC.

I'd hate to think the reason I don't slit people's throats in real life is because of the voice I was born with.

You don't control or create NPCs, giving life to them is entirely down to developers or mods. As the player you create and control your character, it's not remotely comparable.

Inability to definitively infer tone from text dialog is an issue of writer quality.

Comparing voiced PCs to voiced NPCs is disingenuous.

You guys know way too little for it to be immersion ruining. Also I have a feeling the people who have a problem with this (for some reason) don't have a problem with the voiced protagonists but instead have an issue with the dialogue wheel.

If the wheel showed the full text of what the mc was going to say whether the choice was humorous, serious, bland, normal and then he voiced the choice it would be no different than the other fallouts. If they did that im sure these threads wouldn't be popping up.

No, we don't.

Actually I have a problem with both.

That would be preferable, I'd be a lot less inclined to boycott this game were this made to be the case.

They would, but a little less frequently, perhaps.

Honestly, giving a voice to the character you play should add to the ( I hate this word everyone uses as an excuse to dislike something) "immersion". Not seeing how it does anything less than add to it. Maybe its just me but ive always wondered how this let me tap that behind (not exct words) choice you would say to red lucy would sound if the mc was voiced.

indeed, addibg a voice doesnt remove immersion, it just changes what kind it is (and Im personally happy beth was confident enough to give that kind of immerssion a try)

What does "immersion" have to do with playing a character, making decisions that fit the character you're playing, and/or having a moral code? Seriously, I have no idea what you're going for here. Do you seriously think that the only way to play an RPG (or to define a character, whether you're playing a game or writing a novel) is to somehow "immerse" yourself in them? :bonk:

Actually, the thing that killed it for me was the constant over-and-mis-use of the word by whining complainers on game forums. Any feature they don't like, any at all (regardless of type of feature)..... it "ruins their immersion". The word has long since devolved into a joke. Doesn't help that it's one of those only-vaguely-defined words that seems to mean something utterly different to each poster.

Voiced Protagonist won't be an issue. The Writing will, which is why I would argue that keeping Emil as head writer might be a huge mistake. Who knows I could be completely wrong and he pulls out a masterpiece but Skyrim was so bad from a writing POV.

I agree with you, I used to play a mmo called ffxiv and man that community has tons and tons of people in that community mis-and-over use that word when it comes to complaining about something the devs had added.

Not only that but when someone like me would post an idea on the forums that wasn't lore breaking it would get tons of replies like " I don't want this because it ruins my immersion" or " when I walk around and have to see something like that my immersion will be ruined so ima say no to this" it was so irritating.

We would even get good explanations of what we wanted to be added. For example, since the enemies in ffxiv use gunblades and we wanted a gunblade class we would say things like during the enemies rebellion period (which was a thing) some of them decided to help the eorzean allliance ( us the heroes) out and teach us how to make their technology and teach us their fighting ways. But never got added due to the amount " I dont want to see gunblade users because it ruins my immersion" comments.

Somewhere in the world right now, someone's immersion is being ruined. This is just as funny as people's penchant for finding "game breaking bugs".

I'm still wondering what exactly this fabled state of "immersion" is. For some people it seems to be a word for being "in the zone", but for others it's feeling like you're actually there... a feeling I'll never understand since I've never felt like I was doing anything but playing a video game while playing a video game. I'm sure there's plenty of other definitions I have yet to hear.

yeah I'm with you there it's something I'll never understand. I honestly believe it's just a word people use to complain about something.

[Oxford Dictionary: (immerse oneself or be immersed) Involve oneself deeply in a particular activity or interest:

she immersed herself in her work

she was still immersed in her thoughts]

You can get immersed in a novel, a movie or even a game.

The only thing funnier than how some people absolutely REFUSE to get over this is how they imagine their outrage is going to have any kind of meaningful financial impact on Bethesda.

Unlikely, they still bang on about those isometric pixel games from the last century.

Either way, an irrelevant debate as the protagonist is voiced and that's really the end of the matter.

Congrats Bethesda on this splendid decision.

Hmm, seems, rather reminiscent of another word that gets tossed around a whole bunch on game forums. You know, that one that starts with a "c", ends with an "l", and while no one is exactly sure who it specifically refers to, everyone can agree that whoever it is, they ruined gaming.
