You don't control or create NPCs, giving life to them is entirely down to developers or mods. As the player you create and control your character, it's not remotely comparable.
Inability to definitively infer tone from text dialog is an issue of writer quality.
Comparing voiced PCs to voiced NPCs is disingenuous.
No, we don't.
Actually I have a problem with both.
That would be preferable, I'd be a lot less inclined to boycott this game were this made to be the case.
They would, but a little less frequently, perhaps.
What does "immersion" have to do with playing a character, making decisions that fit the character you're playing, and/or having a moral code? Seriously, I have no idea what you're going for here. Do you seriously think that the only way to play an RPG (or to define a character, whether you're playing a game or writing a novel) is to somehow "immerse" yourself in them?
Actually, the thing that killed it for me was the constant over-and-mis-use of the word by whining complainers on game forums. Any feature they don't like, any at all (regardless of type of feature)..... it "ruins their immersion". The word has long since devolved into a joke. Doesn't help that it's one of those only-vaguely-defined words that seems to mean something utterly different to each poster.
Voiced Protagonist won't be an issue. The Writing will, which is why I would argue that keeping Emil as head writer might be a huge mistake. Who knows I could be completely wrong and he pulls out a masterpiece but Skyrim was so bad from a writing POV.
I'm still wondering what exactly this fabled state of "immersion" is. For some people it seems to be a word for being "in the zone", but for others it's feeling like you're actually there... a feeling I'll never understand since I've never felt like I was doing anything but playing a video game while playing a video game. I'm sure there's plenty of other definitions I have yet to hear.
[Oxford Dictionary: (immerse oneself or be immersed) Involve oneself deeply in a particular activity or interest:
she immersed herself in her work
she was still immersed in her thoughts]
You can get immersed in a novel, a movie or even a game.
The only thing funnier than how some people absolutely REFUSE to get over this is how they imagine their outrage is going to have any kind of meaningful financial impact on Bethesda.
Very true. "I won't buy it until they change this!"
So many sad vault boys.
Good luck with all that.
I wish it were that simple. Unfortunately in the wonderful world of gaming it doesn't seem to be.
Innovation that some people can`t accept.....
Unlikely, they still bang on about those isometric pixel games from the last century.
Either way, an irrelevant debate as the protagonist is voiced and that's really the end of the matter.
Congrats Bethesda on this splendid decision.
Hmm, seems, rather reminiscent of another word that gets tossed around a whole bunch on game forums. You know, that one that starts with a "c", ends with an "l", and while no one is exactly sure who it specifically refers to, everyone can agree that whoever it is, they ruined gaming.
