Is BioShock any good?

Post » Thu Aug 26, 2010 1:40 am

It's a very good game, and the artwork and music choices are a lot of fun. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in it because I was hoping that it would be as dark, tense, and deep as System Shock 2 (which is was supposedly a "spiritual sequel" of) and it really wasn't. It did borrow a lot from the System Shock series, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. Still a worthwhile game IMO.

It's the only FPS I've purchased in a long time.

I want to pick up some games and BioShock looks pretty interesting. Is it a good game?

It's alright. Not as good as most people say.

I would say it is indeed a classic and must play. Although, I can only speak for Bioshock 1.

Classic? Whaaa?

He had Bioshock confused with System Shock.

I didn't think it would be that great, but what it does it does brilliantly. Dripping with atmosphere, beautiful graphics, and everything has this nice weighty feel, where in a lot of FPSes, it's like you're gliding on ice. It doesn't last long, but it lasts long enough to do what it has to.

its an ok game. i suppose that it should look awesome to me but i just dont get the whole art deco thing, its just not my cup of tea. i hate the combat. i started off using the guns and plasmids but the gun play is so horrendous that i switched to melee. that was a worse decision. melee becomes very overpowered once you start upgrading it and i was slaughtering everything including big daddies easily on hard mode. the combat is definitely the weak point of the game.

stuff i did like and in fact loved was the voice acting . it was very good andi loved running around listening to all the audio tapes i could find . the only other time i remember doing that in a game recently was the mansion in vampire bloodlines. i also liked the choice between being good and evil.

I didnt like it. The enemies were obnoxious and dumb, the graphics were horrible and the story was meh. I really honestly tried to play through it and to like it, but everything about it just rubbed me the wrong way.

It got atmosphere right though, the environments were A+.

Loved it, and highly recommend it. Can't really add anything on to what's already said, but I agree with all the positives. I will say that it's refreshingly difficult, even on the normal difficulty.

It's been the best example of actually fitting game narrative until Portal 2. So for that alone it's worth checking out. The gameplay itself is a slightly Wells-ified and less intricate SysShock2, so that's not its best quality.

Zuh? Bioshock is considerably easier than most FPS' I've played, even on the hard difficulty.

I thought the beginning to the first was pretty dark. Rapture was creepy on its own. As the game went on and you got more used to the environment, it sort of lost the luster.

I may have to install the second again since I never finished it. Thought the first was better since you aren't a big daddy and you seem more vulnerable.

Yeah, especially considering it's only possible to die against the last boss. During the rest of the game you have an unlimited number of lives.

Still a very good game though, even if I prefer System Shock 1&2 more :)

Unless you turn the Vita-chambers off. That's what I did. Made the game a bit more fun since I could actually die if I messed up.

I agree with you though. System Shock 2 better (can't speak for the first, never played it).

I never even used the Vita-Chambers, didn't have to turn them off. You can already save anywhere, didn't see the point.

My second favourite game this generation. Compelling story, immersive environments, and excellent gameplay.

Do yourself a favour and go pick it up!

I thought for environments to be great you need to have good graphics? I'm pretty sure this is the stupidest question on Earth, but I always thought that Good environments = Good graphics.

Not at all. Just look at System Shock (since it's already been mentioned and is relevant). It's got some great environments, yet it obviously has old graphics.

In System Shock 1, each level of the Citadel Station had a conversion chamber which had to be manually switched on - afterwards, so long as you died on a floor with an active chamber it would revive you infinitely as in Bioshock. The initial danger of accessing a new area and risking actual death really made the revival mechanic far more rewarding. It's a shame that every area of Bioshock pretty much had a Vita-Chamber right at the front-door, so that you always had one waiting for you.

I preferred the sequel. The hacking in the first Bioshock made me want to smash my own face in with a rusty spatula.

Really? I loved the hacking in the first game, I didn't like it at all that they turned it into another timing based thing in the second game. What was so bad about hacking in the first game?

It is definitely one of the most well written games I've played, as well as possessing a very sophisicated storyline, arguably one of the best I've experienced in a game. It takes a lot of influence from popular literatures and philosophies (Orwellian and Randism to mention but a few), which if you're interested in, enhances the narrative further. The world design is also brilliant, and the art deco type metropolis is beautiful. It is clear that a lot of detailed design was put into BioShock. The gameplay is also a lot of fun, and I enjoy the amount of freedom the game gives you (albeit being slightly linearly limited). Whilst not having completed the sequel, I feel the general consensus is that is was just simply not as memorable as the first, mainly in terms of storyline, as I feel the gameplay is generally consistent with the first.

Yeah, I'm a fan.
