It is a little bit overrated, but good none the less.

For a FPS it's pretty long, especially if you take the time to explore.

The whole Rapture setting and the story are also very good.

I didn't like it as much as a lot of people as it was pretty over hyped, but if you just play it for what it is, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Very good indeed, has gorgeous design and an intriguing plot. Not quite as deep gameplay as its spiritual predecessor, System Shock, but quite similar in many respects.

Compared to System Shock, the gameplay isn't anything particularly profound - but people nowadays get to craft ammunition types in any order they want, and to them it means "super revolutionary RPG elements lolol". Aside from some moral ambiguity, lots of the philosophical issues are kind of imagined by the player and the game's writing isn't really as deep as some overzealous critics make it out to be. Deus Ex's writing, to me, was far more moving at times.

I digress, though. It's a great game with an engrossing story and a stark, haunting atmosphere which I hadn't felt since I first played Myst back in the 90s. Everybody should play it at least once.

I didn't find it to be particularly amazing, but "solid, above-average game" is still better than most of what you'll find.

It's sequel was shorter. On topic, the game is amazing, probably one of my favorite games. Buy it. Don't buy the sequel though. Don't ask why, just don't.

Edit: What's with me and typos?

I enjoyed the second one for what it was worth, even somewhat liked the multiplayer. I think the problem with the second one was people already knew what to expect so Rapture didn't have that strange distant feel.

I really enjoyed the first one. The second was pretty blah, in my opinion.

It has one of the best storylines of any game i have ever played and I whole heartily endorse it. What stands out the most about it is the quality of the setting and the writing but the gameplay is also a lot of fun.

I would say it is indeed a classic and must play. Although, I can only speak for Bioshock 1.

I preferred the sequel. The hacking in the first Bioshock made me want to smash my own face in with a rusty spatula.
