"Birthsigns" are confirmed

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 1:01 am

In the Playstation Magazine it says that there are 13 "birthsigns" in the game. Instead of picking a sign at the beginning of the game you choose one at large free standing stones called "Doomstones" scattered around skyrim. They impart the pc with skill boosts or special powers. You can choose any one of the 13 "birthsigns", but only one at a time, and we can switch between them if we don't like what a certain "birthsign" gives us. I'm not sure if this has already been told, but there's a lot of stuff in the magazine I haven't heard about here yet.

On xbox(I think)- Hitting circle brings up the menu, hit right on D-pad for items, left spells, Up skills. Items and spells can be browsed in categorized Multi-leveled lists, and equipping them is as easy as hitting r1 or r2(for left or right hand). Hitting up when not in the main menu brings up the quick menu.

Oblivions speechcraft wheel is out, replaced by "Fallout" style dialogue choices.

Staffs, bows, and two handed swords can be used to block, though they are more effectively used bashing instead of blocking.

There's foxes that hunt rabbits.(so wolves and foxes).

Ice Form- shout, Encases enemies in a block of ice, temporarily paralysing them.

Whirlwind Sprint- Shout, Let's players blast rapidly in one direction. Ideal for aiming distance attacks At fleeing enemies, Or getting in close to bash them.

Storm Call- High level Shout, "The sky darkens in a vortex of Swirling black clouds, it begins to rain heavily, as lighting strikes down, hitting the dragon(they are fighting)."

Charge shouts by holding R2 (I assume xbox 360, they also mention a circle button at some point, not related to shouts, so does xbox have a circle?)

Giants are 12ft tall.

Also, Oblivion contained 40,000 lines of dialogue(I didn't know this) and Skyrim has 60,000(did know)

Main quest can be completed anywhere from 20-30 hours.

It will take 300 hours to see everything the game has to offer.

Edit:Cleaned up/added more information from the Magazine.
This is everything I Personally haven't seen, or stuff I knew but with a bit more information I hadn't known.

Sooo, they're like the stones in Oblivion then?

Still, it'd be nice if I could chose one when creating a character.

Wait, so you change the sign you're born under by slapping a rock jutting out of the ground? pourquoi?

Gee, first the inconsistency with armor pieces and now this. I think I'm just going to wait until the E3 presentations and try to see if I can glean any confirmation on these things from there. :P

I'll pick one and that one alone. If you read the firmament, they do have RP effect.

It actually does make no sense, Xerxan... It is the sign that you were BORN UNDER.

Well, except that in Oblivion you had a Birthsign, then could grab an "auxiliary" one at a Doomstone.

Now you only get the "auxiliary" one, so...what they're really saying is that Birthsigns are indeed out since you'll only have the secondary "non-birth" one you already had access to in Oblivion.

The paragraph specifically calls them birthsigns, but goes on to mention how we don't pick them at the start, and can switch between them. They sound exactly like oblivions stones, except they last for as long as you want, Basicly until you decide to pick a new one.

Honestly, IMO, birthsigns are out, and "Doomstones" are their replacement for Skyrim.

No, you change the sign you are guided by. You can change your stars!

It seems just like one of the temporary powers from Oblivion. I wish we had the one birthsign w choose for our character because you cannot change what they was born under. I am going to wait to watch E3 to see what they have to say...

It's on page 55, about the last paragraph after they talk about skills. Next to the picture of the meats.

I read the magazine and I did not read that.

There have seen a few threads where people give out some info from a magazine but then others come along and say that they have the exact same magazine but have not read that info! I don't know what to believe anymore!! :ahhh: What the OP is saying is that people in Skyrim don't have birthdays, that sounds crazy but we'll just have to wait until E3 to see if there is extra info.

If they bring them back, it'd be nice to find out what those stones are all about. In Oblivion they were just like "here's a rock; touch it and get power!"

Also the magazine says oblivion has 40,000 lines compared to Skyrims 60,000(that we knew, I didn't know oblivions though.)

It will take 20-30 hours to "blast" through the main quest.

300 hours to see everything the game has to offer.

I'd find it weird personally if birthsigns were out and stone powers remained, considering aside from The Atronach and The Apprentice most of the birthsigns were pretty much a straight-forward boon to your character. Do any choices you get to make in Skyrim have permanence? <_<
