A bit early for all of this GotY talk

Post » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:29 am

I personally feel that people are just making the wait worse with all of the talk that the game is going to be the Game of the Year. I personally feel that the game will not only be the game of the year, but also one of the best games ever created. Yet we have no pictures, no videos other than that teaser, and very little news.

What we know so far is this:
The game is set for release on November 11, 2011
The game is going to have a new engine, one that is not NetImmerse
Bethesda Game developers say the game looks amazing
One of the guys from Game Informer says the game is a potential masterpeice and that he has known about it for the past year.
The same person from GI also said that he wishes he could tell us what it was about, and that "mind... blown..."
Bethesda has a very good track record- at least 3 GotY games (two of which are previous elder scrolls games)

The rest is all logical and illogical reasoning.

Is this really enough to say it will be GotY already.

Well, both Oblivion and Fallout 3 were great games, and Skyrim could only be better, so I'm getting hyped for it.

My heart says "beat, beat, beat, beat..."
My brain says "anolyze and break down the possibilities and figure out the percent chance it has to win"

Either way, I really don't care if it is GotY, it really should not matter to us, What should matter is whether or not the game is awesome.
Besides the people who do the GotY stuff tend to be a bit biased.

"Could only be better?" That almost implies you can not get any lower than Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Not what I meant. What I meant was that Bethesda has expanded, and they know what mistakes they've made, so they can only improve on their mistakes and continue to improve what they did right.

At least, I hope so.

Not quite, while predecessors won a large sum of awards, only Morrowind, Oblivion, and the completely unrelated Fallout 3 won GotY.

No, not really. Bethesda has a reputation of making great, goty winning games. We're just excited man, we've all been waiting for this for a long time

While there may not seem to be many competitors yet, you do not know how this game and others will actually be yet.

I think that Brink, a for the most part unknown game, will be a decent contender.
L.A. Noire may be quite a competitor if it is released in 2011.
and many other games have big chances, not to mention games that have yet to be announced.

I would like to know how the GOTY is decided: Is it by number of sales, by public vote, by reviewer vote or some other industry means? And if it is by the number of sales, what is the period for those sales; is it between set dates or in a set amount of time ie: any three month period? Just curious. Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

It depends on which GotY you are referring to, there are many groups that give out GotYs.

ES is just awesome. Even with the billions of flaws they're always the most fun game around and with the longest playtime.

Off-hand, I'd say Bioware will get either DA2 or ME3 in, but not both. Diablo 3 is going to be very popular, but will it be GOTY material? Who knows. Arkham City will contend. Brink and RAGE seem to be drawing a lot of interest as well. That's just what I can remember...

2011's GOTY is really going to need to reach out and seize it with authority...

You have a point that it may not be game of the year but 2/4 TES games have made GOTY, a very similar game type in FO3 won also. They tent to be very liked games and it is hyped. Yes there is a chance it wont be people are just wanting it to be a great game is all. Don't make us second guess ourselves

All Right, Grimblade, look at it this way. Even if by some fluke of intelligence everyone that gives out GOTY thingies gets an aneurism or suddenly dies and is replaced with an emotionless, thoughtless, game hating fanatical religious nut that seems to be able to determine that by the very existence of Dragons in the game that makes it a horrific game that must be condemned, it will still make GOTY somehow.

Sure, it might take an amassing of fans of the awesomeness of TES to do it, and it may not be a Legit GOTY award, and it's only other contender for the award might be Madden 2012, but it will still be GOTY. We'll just get together, make up a site, make up some company sounding name, and award it the title of GOTY. Why? Because it is that awesome. Do we need proof that it will be that awesome to declare it that awesome? No, we don't, because we don't care at this point and they could hand us something that looks like Travels, but on a PC and we'd still love it for the simple fact that it's a new TES game. Some of us like Fallout, hell, tons of us loved it too, but we still want, nay, need, our time alone, behind locked doors, for months at a time, with TES. There are some needs that even ghouls can't provide for that require that special touch of a Khajit, or the loving embrace of a Breton. We have been deprived of new TES (main series, not spin offs) for far too long, and anything new will be beyond anything we could imagine.
