64-bit executable

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:10 am

Do you run a 64-bit computer? Do you want a 64-bit exe for Skyrim? If so why? Maybe we can get some expert opinions and hopefully persuede them to release one. Then I have a question. Couldn't they release one for download? How large would it be? Just a few MBs. Or would it need rewriting of the game?

Now days, I think that the majority of the PC gamers, with their ever more powerful hardware, have moved to 64bit operating systems to at least break the 4 GB RAM threshold. With the very near future of all PCs moving to 64-bit operating systems. With the extra resources and possibilities it has. Why would they not release a 64-bit exe for Skyrim. It being on the threshold itself. It would just add so much more possibility to the potential of the game and it's eventual mods. Anyway I am not an expert on 64-bit computing but I do know it is next months (stressing) future for computing. And we all know the potential it has. It is late for me. And I will be back later to edit this post if need be.

As of now Todd Howard has said there is not a 64-bit exe.

Excellent idea. I'm not sure how far it will get since Skyrim isn't designed around a concept of "maximum"performance. Hopefully people who know more about the restructuring language can chime in as to what's required to release a 64-bit format. I'm thinking it would require a seperate disk for download or a seperate listed version, both ideas don't seem viable from a sales standpoint since a lot of the player base are casual consoles.

It would require a seperate executable for the PC version.

Regarding how complicated it is to code, well, simple if there's not much direct memory management in the application, more time consuming the more there is.

64-bit CPU and OS here. Only 4 GB's of RAM, but I'd considerate upgrading if a 64 bit.exe is releaased.

So, voted Yes

I agree, especially with graphic cards having more and more memory (which means less memory for the rest of the system), and computers often having 4Gb or more, a 64-bit exe would be really nice.
Besides, it shouldn't be to hard to compile one, should it?

Having a x64 OS and 16GB of RAM, I would like them to make a 64bit executable. But I could also be happy with just a 32bit exe, as well. I doubt they will make one, as its too time consuming.

The search button is at the top right of the page. Use it and find many, many 64 bit threads with all the discussion and explanation behind the lack of a 64-bit exe explored.

I don't have a clue how complicated it is to make a 64 bit exe. It seems to me that it could potentially increase sales though. They could just create an upgrade-to-64-bit file and make it available through Steam. Anyone who purchased and registered the 32 bit version could then upgrade it immediately. I wouldn't even mind paying a little extra for it.

Yes. It's just time to get used to 64-bit and it's not like it'll cost a huge amount of resources. And it does make a difference in performance, especially with large amounts of mods.

Excuse me sir... I did search specifically (64 bit) and guess what? I didn't see ANYTHING in my search.

Don't see it happening but yes, please.
TES games have a tendency to be played for many years and seeing as how many PC's today are 64-bit and more coming as years pass, it would be smart to prepare Skyrim for it with a 64-bit exe.

I'd like to see that there is a 64 Bit version of any application that consumes much ressources. Especially for the extensive use of memory it is an advantage and since PC memory increases in amount there are only a few applications that can make use of this.

Coding for 64 Bit isn't that complicated when you follow a few rules and there are lots of ressources for devs - they are just not used well.

Before you start getting all snarky, I did a quick search myself - here are the first few threads I came across using it.

I suppose they are just too far into development now, and back when development started 32bit reigned dominant. I can guarantee it for TES 6 though.

Add to that, memory is cheap now. It's at about 8 GB's for $50 and with my graphics card running at 2GB's it's only a matter of time before PC's head that way as a standard. Plus, isn't a 64-bit OS more impervious to viruses since most of them are written for 32-bit systems?

Well sorry sir. I was being nice, just honest. My searches of the forums don't come up with 64-bit topics.

I know that there are problems in making a 64-bit exe that might make it costly, but yes, I have a 64-bit OS and I would very much like a 64-bit exe as well.

The biggest problem is usually getting both a 32 bit executable and a 64 bit executable past QA.
