A bit of a strange question... but...

Post » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:27 pm

Does anyone find it difficult to not play a good character? Or vice-versa, not play a bad character?

My first play-through I never stole or pickpockted anything or anyone, always taking the good moral path on my journey through the Mojave Desert, always backing out of a fight that would otherwise affect how the good natured people of the wastes would feel about my character.

On my second play through, I began with the intention to be nothing but ruthless with the people I meet, always taking the option to kill or harm mentally.
2 hours in I found myself not having the will-power to actually continue down this path, like I was somehow doing something "wrong", so I stopped.

Is this just me, or something different?

This is the same case with me. Clearly the game developers did a good job :)

You're not alone. I find myself so immersed in RPG's that I cannot bring myself to hurt and kill innocent people.

I guess if an RPG can be that atmospheric and immersive It's a good thing.

I found the same thing happening with Fallout 1 and 2, not so much 3 or games like Fable or Mass Effect.

Weird how the mind works!

Lol, same here. When I purposely try to be REALLY bad, I usually end up detesting my character.
Every time I made them do or say something mean, I'd get unreasonably irritated at them. Then I'd compare them to the characters I did prefer, and be all like, "And THIS is why YOU'RE not my favorite!"

I actually have a hard time not playing neutral believe it or not lol. I'm just out for myself in RPGs, I don't know why. Probably because it's just a game, so I don't really care. Like I wouldn't kill someone in real life because I want their hat, but I will in Fallout lol.

But yeah I know what you mean. One example I can think of where my sense of morality held me back in a game was during my evil Mass Effect 2 playthrough. At the part where you need to recue your crew near the end. The evil thing to do would have been to arrive too late, but I'd played the game before and I knew what would happen if I did. I couldn't do it, it's just too horrible lol.

I think that if you're not a sociopath in real life and you're really trying to put yourself in your character's shoes it's pretty normal to have a hard time playing a ruthless character. Over time I've gotten better at "putting on my black hat" in games, but I still mess up and do good things before I remember I'm supposed to be playing my nasty character. The superego is a powerful thing. :P

I had the exact same problem that you had back in Fallout 3, but then... I went to Rivet City.

Good times :flamethrower:

In other words, if you go to a highly populated city and just wreck havoc, you'll find your self to be a cold-hearted gamer in no time!

I'l have to admit, in Fallout 2 when every single thing to do was done to dust I did unleash chaos on Sanfransico with the Vindicator Minigun, but I didn't save afterwards! :D

Aww, haha. I did a similar thing, except it was a mommy coyote I killed. :( I felt horrible since my last save was a couple hours back, but apparently, my conscious could handle feeling a little bit of guilt rather than lose all that time. ;P
The other coyote went insane and chased me halfway up a hill, and I just ran around and around trying to not get mauled... Because, haha, I couldn't bring myself to hurt it. Still, I seriously LOL'd at my pitiful situation.

And thanks - umm, if you mean the ones in my sig/avatar, I just scribbled them while I was bored... xD *lol amateur*

I don't find my sense of morality to me much of a hindrance in this game to be honest. I think it's because there's such a massive pay off. Try putting your crosshair on someones head and using the forward power attack with the fire axe when you've got 100 melee skill, you'll see what I mean.

I always am far too good my first time through, I cannot steal or pickpocket. I can be more not so nice on subsequent playthroughs. I don't think I will ever be able to be all bad though, I always think I will do a kill 'em all run, but never do. I will have not a big problem shooting people in the face that irritate me, the BoS will not survive run 2, that is assured

My first play through i always play as myself and make the choices i believe i would make in that situation... i usually end up mostly good but if someone rubs me the wrong way i dont give them much of a chance and i tend to steal every thing of use i can get my hands on :whistling: .

my second play through i always play as my dark side and listen to that little devil on my shoulder, though times my since of morality wins the battle... like when i have to make a choice of being unreasonably cruel to some one innocent or some one thats already having tough times.

my third play through as you can guess is usually my all out good guy who follows the lead of play through one but without the stealing or killing.... i try to be diplomatic to no end and solve my problems with out drawing my six shooter :gun:

Back in Fallout 3 times, I just saved and pulled out my Gatling Laser and mauled Megatonians(Megaton Residents) and loaded, I did not care if their heads were on a stick or a platter, I was ruthless and violent (I nailed their heads to the "Atom" Bomb and blew their limbs off with a missile launcher....awesome

when I started an evil character on fallout 3 I was always thinking "omg I don't want to do this... but I'm evil..." after some hours playing I just got used to it, and start laughting when I did something bad.
but on my real gameplay, being "myself" I'm neutral/good, so I'm actualy good on FalloutNV (not Very good XD)

I wouldn't steal anything if it really effected the guy I was stealing from. For example if I completely robbed the shack of a poor family and after that I saw them starve to death or if the father couldn't find his gun inside (which I stole) to defend his kids against wild dogs resulting in the dogs killing and eating his kids, I would think twice about doing it. But there isn't really anything that stops people from doing evil deeds.

I might also do something like this: I steal a man's gun from the holster just before a duel. It could result in an extremely funny result if done right.

I roleplay within the game world. I don't try to think who I am in reality but I think what the character would have done. So the examples I gave are definitely what makes a roleplaying game "win". These are real world changing actions.

I hope to see many things like these in future rpgs.
