Bittersweet Excitement

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:38 pm

Tomorrow is the day the last new Fallout material comes out for the foreseeable future. I remember Christmas morning a few years ago when I got Fallout 3 as a present. I hadn't really hard of the game at the time and I didn't know what to expect. I put it in and that moment I stepped out of the Vault, for the very first time, it was amazing. It truly was. Video games don't usually have an impact on actual life, they are just a form of entertainment, but Fallout is such an amazing game. It shows us both the best and the worst it humanity. Lonesome Road, as we all know, comes out tomorrow. It is probably going to be amazing and I will play it with excitement. But once it is over, it is going to be sad. After like 4 years of Fallout 3, time in-between waiting for FNV and then FNV, there is going to be an empty feeling knowing nothing is announced to come. So my question(s) to you are, do you think there will be a Fallout 4 and what is your mood/emotions coming into tomorrow's ending of Fallout....for now..

You are aware Bethesda was contracted to make 3 full Fallout games and DLC?

So far they have only done 2 games, though they didn't make New Vegas themselves, it is still counted as one of theirs.

Yes, but nothing has officially been announced. And it is likely going to be a few years before a new game would be released

Well game companies rarely have just one team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fallout 4 came out late next year. Since Bethesda let Obsidian do New Vegas, they could have had a secret team working on Fallout 4 for well over 2 years now.

You are a bit confused and that's irrelevant now anyway. Bethesda originally licensed three Fallout games from Interplay. That simply meant they had the right to make them, not that they were required to. But it doesn't matter since Bethesda later bought the franchise outright from Interplay and licensed the right to make an MMO back to Interplay as part of that deal. The MMO situation is legally in dispute, but either way Bethesda now has full control over other Fallout games.

That all said, I have no doubt we will see Fallout 4 in a few years. Bethesda is likely already working on it since the last stages of finishing Skyrim are more technical in nature. The writers and artists at Bethesda have already moved on to the next project, which is most likely Fallout 4.

They own Fallout now. That was the original extent of their contract, but they eventually just purchased the franchise.

Really, it's pretty obvious that they plan to release more, outsourced or not. You'll have to wait an unknown amount of time, but you'll live. This doesn't mark the end of New Vegas for me though, because I haven't explored the full extent of the game (mostly with not doing House or Legion) so I could do those with the complete picture.
