Black distant structures when viewed from certain angles

I know that I had a similar issue in a previous install, but in this install I had no issue until I installed some mod updates. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?

I know that I had a similar issue in a previous install, but in this install I had no issue until I installed some mod updates.

Ahhhh.... too bad.... This looks like the "black structures" bug to me that is described in the RAEVWD readme. :( IIRC it seems to be related to Bloom lighting. Best if you look it up quickly in the readme. There may be discussion in the RAEVWD thread as well.

RAEVWD was one of the updated mods I installed. Its weird that I didn't have this problem with the older version.

Edit: Thank you for pointing out that note in the RAEVWD readme, I don't know how I could miss it. I set the video settings to HDR and everything is fine.

But I don't understand why in the last version it worked although I was using the AA setting, but now I was forced to switch to HDR?

Also do I lose a lot in terms of visual quality with AA turned off?

The black VWD problem isn't predictable. It apparently only shows up under certain conditions, but if you've got it, HDR is the only known cure for it.

You can usually get AA+HDR working by forcing your video driver to do that. The game won't enable both because the game engine can't do it.

Hm... well that is up to you how sensible you are :) I found I really liked AA better than nice shiny HDR so I switched to Bloom. Which I also learned to appreciate by now because it looks very natural. I also use RAEVWD but so far I have been spared the bug you experience (cross fingers).

What video card and drivers do you have? I have a Nvidia 260-216 and driver version 190.38 so not the latest. If you have an ATI card you can try to force AA via the driver settings. I could do it with my old ATI 3870 but with the Nvidia I could just not get that to work.

I'd make a post in the RAEWVD thread, maybe it is a certain mod combination that will let you have the bug? The author has spoken. :)

Thanks for the info, I have an ATI Card HD 4850. And I activated AA x8 now, does that mean that it will ignore the AA setting in the game, and so I can use the HDR of the game and also AA x8? If this is the case then I won't bother to find the source of the problem and just keep HDR on and depend on the Ati Catalyst for AA.

I did a test and it "appears" to work, not completely sure, and the FPS didn't seem to be affected too much. But I will take your advice and just leave it a 4x and hope it really works.

A sorry I barely noticed your post now. Thank you for the info. Also I would like to mention that I did an interesting test now. I turned on HDR and the problem was gone like I mentioned in a previous post. I tested if I could force AA with my video card but after a close look it seems it doesn't truly influence the AA. I turned off HDR and put AA x4 in the game settings, and now the distant black structures problem is gone.

It may be possible that a simple switcharoo trick between AA and HDR could be a problem solver of this situation that might be worth remembering?

Yes, if you turn off HDR and Bloom, you can use AA from in-game again. And if it helps the "black bug" well, good then!

Whether AA is working or not you can see easily when you look at rounded edges like NPC shoulder regions or face contours. With AA it should not look jagged but smoother and do not show the little "steps". Make some screenshots and compare to be really sure.

I am pretty sure that the AA seting from the Ati Catalyst didn't work because I could see that the leaves from trees looked like many small squares glued together, and with AA turned on from inside the game they looked normal.

AA from Catalyst has always worked for me. I usually set it to 4x Edge Detect mode and have no trouble with it.

Interesting, maybe I should check again more thoroughly, but I will do that only if the problem with the black structures appears again. And after looking at the Ati forums I presume that maybe the model of my video card may have a problem with the AA setting from the Catalyst. I've seen someone complain. Do you have Ati HD 4850 also?

I did experience this black-LOD bug as well a long time ago while using Bloom. Switched to HDR and it was gone. After a while it reoccured. Switched back to Bloom and it was working fine again. Last thing I remember before my laptop broke is it was back and switching to HDR didn't help anymore either. This is really a weird and unpredictable bug with no known "guaranteed" solution that is also "persistent". I mean, I couldn't care less right now, being unable to play the game without a machine able to handle it, but once I got a new pc and reinstall Oblivion I will have to deal with it yet again I'm afraid.

Oddly enough I get this if I force AA in Oblivion through nVidia Control Panel while HDR is active (evga GTX 470). Not a huge deal, with all the crap I have in my game, any AA level that has an appreciable effect really bites into my FPS.

With nVidia cards, there are workarounds available to enable HDR with AA, but you'll need to use an external program to take advantage of those. nHancer is awaiting an update due to compatibility problems with the 2xx.xx driver versions, so I'd suggest nVidia Inspector as an intermediary in the meantime while the folks at nHancer get the problems sorted. Just set AA to override application, apply the workaround, and set the AA level you want (I use 4x Multi) and you're good to go.

There is an AA+HDR workaround specifically for Gamebryo in there, too.

Is that any good in smoothing edges? Really just asking.

HDR + AA is a pain with Nvidia cards.... nHancer is an option but Gosh... so many workarounds to do.... :( I suppose I could try it though as I still use drivers 190.38 and am very happy with them (because Oblivion likes them :lol: ).... just mentioning I still use WinXP 32bit as OS.
