Black Ops 3 gets owned officially by Fallout 4 on Steam

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 3:36 pm

Their is no other way to put this, Black Ops 3 is coming out tomorrow, and Fallout 4 November 10th, yet Fallout 4 is the top game in sales on Steam right now. That is badass.

You know the developers are ecstatic right now, but they can't exactly tweet "WE JUST OWNED CoD!". Course on consoles its probably a different story, I don't know if it can beat out CoD on console the day before it launches in sales, that would be awesome though.

Now if Fallout 4 stays in the top sales all day tomorrow on Steam with Black Ops 3 out, Bethesda will really have a major victory over CoD.

Not surprising. CoD is basically garbage compared to anything Bethesda releases. Quality over quantity.

I think part of it is people are getting a little tired of COD(never played them personally). Seriously it feels like Advance Warfare just came out a couple of months ago. It still going to best selling games every year but it won't beat out games like Fallout(and GTA 5 the year it was released) that come out every few years

When faced with baying a limited number of games in this crowded fall/holiday season, people probably are choosing a whole new game over what ammounts to a map pack, tiny graphics update and 5 new missions (a "campaign" by EA standards)

But as the OP said, 90% of COD sales will be on console. Though I still expect FO4 will outsell it. As someone else said, is getting kind of old. Same with halo. How many versions of a mindless shooter (not knocking it, they have their place) can you make?

Looks like Beth's appeal to the CoD fanbase worked out.

Yeah, as many have said, the entire franchise is optimized for console. It will sell best there. Not near as big a PC title as FO or ES.

Other than some people on forums making up stuff of "appealing to CoD play base" (which people make for every game nowadays, somehow even with Grand Strategies), there was no appealing to them.

Fallout is a prestigious franchise, and Bethesda is a very popular company (especially after Skyrim which was a thundering success). This alone is even the reason why Beth did not bother to market this game so much: they knew long before announcement that terms Fallout and Bethesda, with some fancy videos as sugar on top, are all that is needed.

Can't talk about CoD, never in my life played any but maybe the first one (which is the era before it became CoD of today) and never bothered to follow the news about it.

^^Exactly this.....kind of sad such garbage is even worth mentioning....games like CoD should be dead bottom of the all time Steam sales list with the kind of sales you can count on the fingers of one hand.

Never understood why games like CoD and NHL don't release DLC every year and new games every few years. Must be mind-numbingly exhausting to create a new game every few years.

That's what happens when you milk an IP to death. People lose interest.

I think Fallout 4 will have most of its sales through consoles as well, same with Skyrim. So a good way of indicating it's preformance on both platforms is using Amazon lists. It's not super accurate but last time I checked Fallout was a better seller on both systems over call of duty. Pretty impressive. The only difference is that Halo 5 is the top seller for Xbox right now.

When I first played Morrowind in 2004 as a small kid I knew that I had come across something great.

Here we are over a decade later and I have grown just as much as Bethesda has grown. Millions of people enjoy this type of game now, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Unsurprising. BF3 made EA's Hall of Shame history by being crushed by Skryim--a single player RPG which genre all EA execs had said was dead--by a whopping profit margin in millions of sales

I like COD, its the best FPS fast paced shooter going around. Its fun to play and even better to play with friends. I really think the COD hate is a bit childish.

Not to mention it rakes in hundreds of millions within the first few days of every release. Thats bloody good, and anyone would be stupid to stop that.

That's the Exceptional A$$hats Borg in a nutshell.

Wonder how many gamers even remember that EABorg stole the intellectual property rights for the Madden NFL game engine from Beth back in '86

http://kotaku.com/before-elder-scrolls-bethesda-created-madden-5816920

Doesn't matter what software dev has had the misfortune to encounter the EABorg. Regardless of whether it's Maxis (Sim City, SPORE & the Sims), Bullfrog, PopTop, Bioware (SWOTR, DA) etc. etc. Whatever franchises the EABorg touches are instantly poisoned and will ultimately perish from a slow, painful, death.

Really, the only games I enjoy these days are singleplayer games.

But yeah, this is great news, I suppose. I don't think any of us needed any further evidence to validate our preference's superiority in terms of demand.

Wasn't there some professional survey/marketing consultant group that predicted BO3 would outsell Fallout 4?

Even though I haven't touched it in a very long time it seems it has the best shooting mechanics in any game. I like that part.

But Bethesda makes games that are about much more than shooting alone. Hybrids of genres are becoming more and more common as more money is being injected into the industry and technology catches up. I think we're going to be seeing a lot more games about more than just one thing, and I think Bethesda will still be at the top of their game for action/Roleplaying/Open world hybrids for quite some time, they've been doing it before the technology started making it easy, and they have a huge leg up.

For the looks of it Fallout 4 has vastly improved the shooting and combat mechanics this time around. It will probably be on par with most other shooters now i reckon. And it should be, as shooting and combat is an extremely major part of the game for most people.

Its got a lot of things to it that actually does remind me of CODs shooting mechanics. Some people think thats a bad thing for some reason, since I guess they think anything being anything like COD in any minor way is like some sort of horrible demonic corrupting effect, but damn the shooting looks so good this time.

It's what ive been talking about for a while with COD being a game all about shooting thus having the best shooting ever whereas Fallout 3 is kinda meh since you need to spread your money and man hours out to different things. Looks like we're close to bucking the trend on this, with what we've previously described. I hope this holds true into TES VI, and we get some swordplay mechanics like my personal favourite Dark Messiah, or Mount and Blade that comes really close for the third person stuff. I think its just what you can do with the 20 million sales that Skyrim got - Bethesda now has so much resources to throw around that they can achieve almost anything, and they've been very busy since 2011.

while that great news, cod hasnt really been that much of focus by pc gamers since Modern Warfare, though what id be more interested in is seeing the break down of fallout 4 sales between consoles and pc just to see which platform gets more sales

ARMA is pretty damn fantastic, but they are targeting a completely different type of gamer with each of them. COD is mostly about fast paced arena action, and really has a lot more in common with good old DOOM than some other games on the market, atleast the multiplayer parts that people only care about. ARMA is all about "serious fun", as those wonderful ShacTac videos put it, and is more of a coordinated group effort to play involving hundreds of people that make the game out to be more of a military operations simulator complete with all of the social skills and teamwork that you would need when you literally have players back at HQ trying to coordinate a entire modern battle over radio.

COD is more of a game where you drop in for a hour or two to shoot some dudes and as a result it has the best shooting you can get. Arma is a bit like a multiplayer Bethesda in that it comes across as much more like a sandbox that you and however many people can create your own fun in. Both games have equal merit, but even though one thing is more complex than another it doesn't mean its inherently worse.
