Black Screen"Fallout 4 has stopped working" error at

Post » Sun Jan 10, 2016 12:53 am

Hello,
Yesterday I installed Fallout 4 through steam with no issues, however once "Play" is clicked on the launcher the game appears only as a black screen and an error dictates that the exe has stopped working. I've spent the last four hours trying to fix this issue/updating all my drivers and tried many online solutions, including those posted by Bethesda themselves, but to no avail.

My DxDiag file is below - I would greatly appreciate any help :)

I'm pretty sure that the GPU on this computer is fairly outdated, however I feel as if I should at least be able to reach the main menu, as the PC in question is able tor run Skyrim smoothly on high settings.

Hey the GPU doesn't support DX11 and this game requires that, which is probably why. It's way below the requirements.

Thankyou for replying so fast!

That's such a shame to hear :(

Is it absolutely necessary for FO4 to have access to DX11 or do you think that I have no choice but to update my GPU?

There's some software out there, I don't have a link but others might, that can force the game to use DX10, however your performance, even on super low settings will be an absolute slideshow with that card, if it runs at all.

Well, thank you very much for your help, I guess I'll start saving up for a better gpu :P

No probs :)

You also need more ram as the game requires 8GB, and you may need a new power supply as modern cards require certain power rails (6 or 8 pin rails, usually come in 4s with 2).

Hmmm, okay.

I'm thinking possibly the GTX 750Ti as a replacement for the gpu at least, it seems to have a fairly low wattage requirement - with this card would I still need to upgrade my PSU?

You may not with that card. Check the requirements, it will always say what wattage you need and any extra cables. I have a feeling that card doesn't need dedicated rails.

Personally I would recommend the GTX 960. Recommended PSU 400W. Actual maximum power draw from GPU (~120W).

Yes, the 750 Ti is much lower; Recommended PSU 300W. Actual maximum power draw from GPU (~65W).

I wouldn't recommend buying a card that is 2 generations old (soon to be 3). Now, if its a cost thing, then buy whatever is in your budget.

Your Dell should have a 475W PSU.

GTX 750 ti, you don't have to plug in additional power, plug in the pci express slot and it works. How come no one recommend AMD radeon graphic?

I'm more experienced with Nvidia. My last AMD card was a 6870 about 4 years ago, upgraded twice since, my card before that was a GT 220 same as OP :P

Yeah, honestly aside from easier driver updating I'd be more likely to buy from Nvidia because I've just simply used their products more

Been using Nvidia since GeForce 256  But AMD has some really good graphic cards too (in term of cost performance ratio). Maybe OP can check out YouTube on the respective graphic cards benchmark and decide.

Or you could go with an GTX 950. It has a lower power consumtion as the GTX 960. And it will run Fallout 4 fine too.

Keep in mimd this GPU requires one PCI-E 6 pin connector also, but it needs a 350Watt PSU only.

Benchmarks Indicate a similar performance to AMD's R9 270X, using the best suited Resolution - 1920x1080.

And the price is very affordable too: http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=AS-950M2GD&c=CJ

Of course the decision is yours... ;)
