Is Black Smithing Worth it?

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:42 am

From what I have heard, Ore is fairly rare and hard to find. It is also fairly expensive to buy from vendors. So hearing this, Black Smithing might be a struggle to level. So my question to you guys is what do you think? Will you be using black smithing?

I saw a stream before. The dude leveled his blacksmithing CRAZY fast. I didn't actually see him do it, but I left and when I came back a few hours later, he had 100...

I obviously don't have it either, otherwise I'd be playing it right now. However, I'm just as curious about this as well! The ore seems to be somewhat rare, and the crafted materials don't seem to be as good as you'd think. I thought that Dragon Armor was exclusive to people who have maxed out their Smithing, but in the IGN Livestream, they found Dragonscale Gauntlets whilst searching a dungeon.

I have plans for two characters right now: A pure mage, and a pure warrior. When I make said warrior I will probably make Smithing one of my top skills.

I think Smithing will be fun, but I'm worried that I'll just be able to go to some dood in a store and buy everything I want anyway.

I will be doing the blacksmithing thing, just to enjoy the experience, even if it's economically stupid.

dragonscale is presumably different from dragon, it showed up previously http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Imperial_Dragonscale_Armor#Imperial_Dragonscale_Armor

seems like it will take forever to level up, too much of a timesink for me. Unless someone finds a way to level it quickly.. at a skill of 16 it's already leveling too slow.

So far I've found many ore deposits, even some of the rarer materials (and I'm still level 3 about 2 hours in). My problem is that I don't have a pickaxe! I'm sure if I wandered into a town I could find one, but I'd much rather find a lonely miner in the wilderness and borrow his :D. From what I'm reading, blacksmithing isn't essential to be successful in the game, but if you typically like to play crafters there seem to be many nice options to mildy enhance gear. I guess you can always create gear from raw materials and make money that way too...

If you have a little gold to blow on it, you can skill up Smithing very fast. This morning I went to a smith and bought all his Iron and Steel Ingots. Then I went to the forge and made a bunch of daggers and gauntlets. I literally went up two character levels in the space of a few minutes just from Smithing.

If you want to reach the max level :P then yer.

Roleplaying it's very viable, and i will choose it on a roleplay play through (1st ones always complete all the quests!)

Without roleplaying? Well i've not got it, and I've survived with the weapons I have found on corpses. Also i've been playing 34 hours and only come across 2 Ore Veins. However, I have been fast travelling and haven't been looking for them.

I'm doing it like this
1st character is a warrior with smithing.
2nd character is a theif/assassin with alchemy.
3rd character is a mage with enchanting.

It is one of the best skills for many reasons. Weapons, Armor, Cash, Jewelry, Enchanting (the stuff you made), getting ahead of the competition enemy-wise. Great stuff indeed.

You can also make make hide armor which only requires leather and leather straps. That will level your skill up fairly quick at a cheap cost (or no cost if you put the time in to kill wolves, bears, elk and whatnot). So far I've only seen one mine that had ore veins, but I didn't have a pickaxe at the time. Buying the ingots or ore can get pretty expensive and for the early smithing perks (steel, elven, dwarven) it may not be worth it.

I don't know why people seem to think Smithing takes ages to level, it's incredibly easy to level. My character's highest skill is Smithing, it's in the 60s somewhere. I've spent a while doing it, but seeing as you can just buy all the Iron Ingots/Iron Ore (to then smelt into Iron Ingots) from all the smiths in the world, you can make a hundred Iron daggers in the blink of an eye and go up about 15 points in Smithing.

And trust me, when you're running around in a full set of self-made (and self-Enchanted :D) Orcish Armour, it's definitely worth it. Smithing is one of the best new things about Skyrim.

You actually often find pickaxes in caves that have the ore deposits, that's where I found mine anyways. Not sure how to convert ore into ingots though, can it be done?

Leveling up smithing is extremely easy. On my first day playing my skill has been at 53.

from all skills you can't gain afk like sneaking onto someone sleeping, blacksmithy is by far the easiest skill to raise. first skill i have 100 points in, absolutely worthwile! i'm not one to rush skills btw i just wanted my daedra bow :P

you just have to buy all iron ingots you see at vendors and craft iron daggers. skillgain isn't realy better for better stuff afaik or it is so slight that it's not worth it.
