Blackscreen Crash on Startup "Fallout 4 has stopped work

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2016 9:24 pm

Hi all,

I am experiencing the same issue that many others are, with a blackscreen crash after I press "Play" on the launcher. My GPU is a GTX260, which I'm aware falls below the minimum specs, however I thought I might at least be able to wrestle something semi-playable from the game. (Additionally I've seen many others encounter the same issue when their GPU does meet the recommended spec)

So far I've tried the following that I've seen suggested by others:

Changing the resolution

Running in Windowed Borderless mode

Verifying the cache

Wiping and updating my drivers

Running the game and launcher in admin/compatibility mode

Deleting ini files

Stopping my anti-virus

Additionally, I've checked the Windows Event viewer and I can see that each crash is accompanied by exception code 0xc0000005

Is there anything else I could try to get the game working before giving in? Here is my dxdiag. Let me know if there's any other info you need.

Your GPU is a DirectX 10 GPU. Fallout 4 needs an DirectX 11 and above.

---------

But there is a trick you may wanna try out.

Download this: http://www.ultrabookgaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/dxcpl.zip

1. In the "Scope" section of the window, click on the "Edit List..." button and enter the location of your Fallout 4 executable ( Fallout4.exe ), then press the "Add" button and the "Ok" button

2. In the "Device Settings" section of the window, set the "Feature level limit" to "11_0" and be sure to check "Force WARP"

3. Press Apply/OK and there you have it. Now try to start the game again...and choose moderate settings.

Actually try the low detail setting first.!

There's a number of reasons why the Black screen might occur. Just because you see other people with recommended specs doesn't mean much.

Yea correlation doesn't mean anything. Your GPU isn't DX11 and has 1/2 the minimum VRAM, that's your issue.

As stated, you need DirectX 11.0 (or newer) capable card. The Nvidia Geforce 200 series only support DirectX 10.0.

Minimum requirements aside you need at least: Nvidia Geforce 400 series and AMD Radeon 5000 series, for DirectX 11.x support.

Emulating DirectX 11 support (for GPU) isn't going to work very well, unless you have a very powerful CPU and GPU, which you don't because you don't even meet the minimum VRAM requirement.

Ah fair enough, guess I'll have to wait until this card is on its last legs. Thanks for your help everyone.
